RECRUITING: 2024 Iowa TE Jacob Simpson recaps unofficial visit to Lubbock

Some halftime recruiting stuff for y'all. Simpson visited for the Baylor game last weekend and is a top priority in his class. Tech was his first offer back on October 11, and he's added Missouri and Louisville since.

Take us through your day in Lubbock and what you got to do. Overall thoughts on gameday at Texas Tech, the facilities, the atmosphere, etc.

"My family and I had a great weekend in Lubbock! The game day atmosphere was electric. I had the opportunity to catch up with coach Coach Cochran before the game, it was great to meet him in person. We then were able to be on the field for warmups. I must say Jones AT&T Stadium is phenomenal and it sounds like it will only get better with the upcoming South Endzone Renovation project. The atmosphere at the game was great, the Masked Rider, Goin' Band from Raiderland, tortillas flying everywhere it was awesome! Another thing that stood out to me was how passionate and supportive the Texas Tech fan base is. At the game I had multiple fans give me fist bumps and high fives. It was also cool to be able to see Patrick Mahomes be inducted into the Ring of Honor. Overall a great game day experience. Since I am from Iowa and don’t have many opportunities to get down to Lubbock my family and I stayed an extra day on Sunday to learn more about Texas Tech. We were able to tour the campus, special thanks to Preslee (Quisenberry) and Sean (Kenney) for their hospitality on Sunday. We also got to tour the Marsha Sharp Center for Student Athletics and talk to their fantastic Academic Advisors Kate and Margot. We had the opportunity to talk to Coach Barilow and observe the Sunday lifting session. I was really impressed with Coach Barilow’s message to the team following a tough loss the night before. His message focused on the opportunities ahead and to learn from the tough loss but move on and work hard to realize those upcoming opportunities. We then had the opportunity to talk with Coach McGuire and learn more about him and the culture he and his staff are working to build. I was so impressed with his vision and how he connects with his players and helps them grow and develop both on and off the field."

Who are the coaches you were able to connect with? How is your relationship with the Tech coaches and how often do you stay in contact?

"I connected with Coach Cochran, Coach McGuire, and Coach Barilow during my visit. I have been so impressed with all of the coaching staff at Texas Tech. They are all very genuine and really take the time to build relationships with their players and recruits. A great example of this was before the game against Baylor I went up to introduce myself to Coach McGuire and he said 'You don’t have to introduce yourself I know who you are it is great to have you here Jacob'.

My relationship with the coaches is really strong, I talk to Coach Cochran daily. I really appreciate his support and his interest in how things are going for me. "

What's your interest level in Texas Tech? Is that a school you'll consider once it's time to make your decision?

"Right now my interest level in Texas Tech is really high! I honestly had a great trip to Lubbock and it actually exceeded my expectations. It is definitely somewhere I could see myself furthering my athletic and academic career."

Who are some of the other schools you're hearing from the most right now?

"Things have been definitely picking up for me lately, I have received offers from Mizzou and Louisville in addition to Texas Tech. I am also in contact with Iowa on a regular basis and have heard from Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Princeton, Yale, Nebraska, Houston, Northern Illinois, Iowa State and North Dakota State."

QB Room Production Under Coach Kittley

The QB position is always the player under the most scrutiny. He often gets too much credit and too much blame. He controls the play but is at the mercy of the players around him to execute and do their individual jobs.

With 75% of the season completed we have had to use 3 different QBs due to injuries and health. There is a well known saying in football when you use more than one QB...

Here's the position production and then broken down by player:

TEAM:
258-422 61.1% 2,861 yds 21 TD 16 INT
126 rushes 186 yds 1.5 avg 7 TD

Tyler Shough:
16-34 47.1% 239 yds 2 TD 2 INT
12 rushes 5 yds 0.4 avg 1 TD
Starts W: Murray State

Donovan Smith:
146-220 66.4% 1,505 yds 12 TD 8 INT
72 rushes 102 yds 1.4 avg 4 TD
Starts W: Houston, Texas

Behren Morton:
96-168 57.1% 1,117 yds 7 TD 6 INT
42 rushes 79 yds 1.9 avg 2 TD
Starts W: West Virginia

Post-TCU Thoughts

I’m still at the game so can’t post many thoughts.

Feels like the phantom face mask on Tyree changed the game. Would’ve been 3rd and around 20 — instead it turned into the go-ahead TD for TCU.

TCU’s defense is susceptible. It can be had. Almost everyone they’ve played have moved the ball against them, with relative ease. We did not. I’m sure the Behren injury was a factor, but it’s debatable whether it would’ve made a huge difference. We have the 2nd worst offense in the conference. It’s not even a debate at this point. Really hard to win games the way we are playing on that side of the ball.

The defense played really well for the majority of the game. We challenged their WRs in press coverage. It worked. The scoreboard won’t really show it, but it was a hell of an effort

Our offense is a problem. It has been all season. Didn’t help that we finished the game down 3 outside WRs. Hope Sparkman is okay. He made a hell of a catch.

We averaged around 6 yards per carry on traditional handoffs. It was the only success we had on offense.

I don’t mind any of the 4th down calls. McGuire was trying to win — not cover.

Next week is must win. We should win at home. I’m thinking Tech -3 or so is what the line will be if we were fully healthy. But I have no idea what to think if Behren can’t go. We don’t seem to have any faith in Shough or Donovan.

Post-Loss Bourbon

Having a pour this evening and it took some time to decide what's appropriate. It can't be anything too good b/c those are for celebrating and we're definitely not doing that. It also can't be the base level from cabinet b/c I need something to lift my spirits, if only a little. I went with the WR Double Oaked. What's your comfort / emotional support bourbon.

Freshman

Have any freshman other than Adedire gotten significant playing time? I’m assuming most of them will redshirt. I’m excited to see the growth of players like Tyler King who is supposed to be able to blow the top off the defense (considering that’s the biggest downfall of our current WR corp)

Tired of this crap.

As a fan, I will always support the Red Raiders financially and vocally, but I’m tired of fuking losing. It’s exhausting being a fan of this football program. Not just of this season but the beating over the last decade in football. It blows my mind that we can’t, as program figure this shit out. The stress is further amplified during such a critical time in college athletics. The fact that you see national pundits pushing us to the side and talking about the TCUs, Baylors, and shit even Houston’s of the world is demoralizing (not that they haven’t earned it). If this realignment stuff was in full swing 10-15 years ago, those schools would be negotiating its relevancy with the mountain west. But TCU and Baylor have figured it’s shit out and we still seem to be holding on to hope that 2008 is right around the corner. I’m hopeful JM is moving things in the right direction. Recruiting is a positive which is the life blood of a program. But god damn this is getting old. Thanks for reading my rant. -Kindly, exhausted Tech fan.
