HOOPS: Notebook: Batcho recaps double-double, Tyson debut & win over Northwestern St.

Jaylon Tyson:

-Tyson on his apparent injury:
"I caught a cramp, I'll be straight."

-Tyson on his long awaited debut: "It was a dream come true. For real. I did feel like God had had it where I needed to be a Red Raider, you know. So now I get to finally put his uniform on and rep his uniform. So it was a blessing for sure."

-Tyson on hot start from deep early: "'It's really just coming out with confidence. You know, I'm saying we've been building confidence ever since we started. We can come out aggressive. We're always gonna come out aggressive on defense, we'll become aggressive on offense."

-Tyson on what he learned last year on bench: "My little break off of basketball or whatever you call it sitting on the bench, you know, that's one part of the game that I've tried to learn, try to be a vocal leader. I'm not the best at it, you know, but I'm definitely improving on it. And that's one of my goals is being a vocal leader. So yeah, just sitting on the bench for that long. You know, I'm saying I got to learn different aspects of the game, not just going out there and playing while also supporting the teammates, you know."

Daniel Batcho:

-Batcho on double-double performance:
"I was just trying to be aggressive, set the tone early. My teammates did a good job of passing me the ball in the post and on pick and rolls."

-Batcho on the confidence the coaching staff has in him: "It's good to know, like the coaches believe in you. Like, they give you even more confidence. So he just like, makes me feel like everybody wants me to do it. Gives me confidence."

-Batcho on his growth from last year to this year: "I feel like it's really my mindset. Last year. I was really like, coming back from an injury, my first year in America. I was trying to figure it out. Find the rhythm. So I feel like more used to it, like I got I got way more confidence."

The Ultimate 2022-23 Texas Tech Basketball Preview

Thought I'd post this here. I went through every player on the roster and looked at their play style, potential fit, and how I see them all fitting together. It's a long read but probably one of the most satisfying articles I've ever written. Let me know what you think and if you have any questions!

Why TCU AD feels like he talk smack about TCU-Tech

Living in Fort Worth, I hate losing to TCU, but I can see why the AD feels like he is justified in talking some smack to Tech fans. These are the win results since 2017:
Football: Tech 1 TCU 5 (TCU currently ranked in top 5 in the nation) (TCU has one more Big 12 Championship trophy than Tech who has never been close to winning a Big 12 Championship)
MBB: Tech 7 TCU 2 (Tech and TCU both reached the Sweet 16 in 2021, although TCU has never played in the Final Four)
WBB: Tech 2 TCU 8
Soccer: Tech 0 TCU 6 Ties 2 (Tech has only score 2 goals in 8 matches)
Baseball: Tech 5 TCU 8 (the three games in FTW in 2021 included two games where Tech acted as if they did not care, which shocked and disappointed me)
Volleyball: Tech 8 TCU 5
MTennis: Tech 0 TCU 4
WTennis: Tech 6 TCU 0
Golf: I assume Tech is better than TCU in both men's and women's golf.
T&F: Tech has a natty and is better than TCU in both men's and women's track.

I will be so glad to quit losing to TCU in football, women's basketball, soccer, and baseball.

OT:Hit by 18 wheeler

I was hit by an 18 wheeler about a month ago on I35. It was nothing serious, we were in stop and go traffic. The owner of the company called right after and said he would just write a check to keep his insurance out of it. He since stopped answer my calls so I called his insurance company, they denied the claim because the driver of the truck didn’t have CDL. I talked to my insurance company and my premium will go up if I file with them. It is not a lot of money $2500 or so, but now I’m mad out of principal. My question is, should I waste the time and money of hiring an attorney. Should I take it to the main board for social justice?

Campus visit - Looking for basketball and football tickets

I am heading to Lubbock on Thursday to show my Son around the best University in America! He is a Junior in High School and is still up in the air on where to go. Tech is leading the way at this point. We are doing the official campus visit on Saturday morning. I'm looking for 4 tickets to the Texas Southern basketball game on Thursday night and 4 tickets to the Kansas football game on Saturday if anyone has anything available. Thanks in advance!

3 things you're curious to see in tipoff game tonight

- What will our default lineup look like in absence of Fardaws. Do we go KO at the 5 and play small ball? If so, who are the other 3 guards/wings? (I know Tyson is likely starting, but Harmon is only one I'm putting in sharpie as a starter). Or do we play Batcho at the 5 and KO at the 4?

-Pop Isaacs is actually the player I'm most curious to see tonight. If there are signs of maturity from him to get major minutes this year, that will be HUGE come conference play in a league filled with tremendous guards. Seth Greenberg bragged about him after visiting Lubbock. Let's see if he was right

-How will tempo and 3 point shooting look in Steve Green's offense. Other than Batcho and KJ, every guy on the roster can launch from deep. Should be fun

Thoughts: RUN THE #$&@ING FOOTBALL

I was excited about the use of analytics and my preference of scheming and sequencing to use 4 plays to get 10 yards .

Last week I bit my tongue on thoughts about Kittely. The first half you had one time that it was close enough to go for it on 4th down. Everything seemed to be 4th and 10+ , usually after either 3 incompletes or two incompletes and a sack. It seemed we just totally abandoned the sequence idea of getting 10 yards . Had we called plays like this we lose to UT.
After the half we use the run to score finally and then we quickly abandon it again.

Today....in a 3 point game you throw an incomplete, gain 8 yards on run and then throw two incompletes to give the ball away on your side of the field.
Basically killed our chances in this game.

Imo the play calling today has been absolutely horrific. It just killed our chances to win today.

Just a gawd awful stat.... In all 5 of our losses, it was a one score game in the 4th quarter.

Oh yeah.....the refs sucked and 3 calls kept us from being comfortably ahead through 3 quarters.

Just my .02

My Thoughts before we move on to next week

I have embraced the analytics approach. I am fully bought in. I understand why we have to be 100% committed to it.

There have been a couple of things I've had to change about my emotional approach to being a fan with this philosophy: you have to be ready to accept that if the outcome - here I reemphasize the word outcome - of the decision is negative, it's potentially going to be really bad.

I think the team has bought into the "what's next" mentality. I don't think the fans have. And that's ok, because of course we're mentally softer than the players. That's how it should be.

I liked Brian Kelly's quote after their win over Alabama and the decision to go for 2 in the first OT. To paraphrase, if you give me one play that determines whether we win or lose a football game, I'll take that gamble 100% of the time. I think that is Joey's mentality. And I think the players feed off of that. They know they can trust him. And if it doesn't work out, he's still going to trust them the next time.

I have said again and again that Texas Tech football has to have a disruptive approach to be a competitive squad. It drives me crazy when so many people on this board essentially say "why don't we just do it like everyone else?" That is not our recipe for success. There is almost 100 years of Texas Tech football data to back that up.

A recipe for success in my opinion is 1) be a disruptor, and 2) recruit well. And I think we have a coach who will do both in spades. In fact, it's the first time in my Texas Tech fandom (mid-90s or so) that we've had that combination. Good things are ahead.

Kansas -9

At least that’s how I have it. It feels really gross saying that, but I’m 3-1 on Tech games (the Baylor was a DNP) and unfortunately the numbers don’t look good at all.

I had a lot of time to think while in Chile, was a little disappointed my travel agent wasn’t one of the first initial last name mods (no offense @techsloth ). Our offense is absolutely terrible. Like so bad, we are only better than Iowa State and that’s with the two great games Morton had.

Our offense EPA is now at .192. Compare that to Kansas with an offense EPA of .401. Their offense is almost elite even with their backup in.

Now our defense is amazing at .121 and the only defense better is Iowa State. We’re pretty much a slightly prettier Iowa State. Kansas is rocking a .239 for what it’s worth.

The only way I see us winning is doing what we did to UT. Control the clock, win the turnover battle, make Donovan be Robot Donovan. Can’t do anything without instructions.

Some complain about the 4th down stuff, but without it this offense is probably worse than Iowa State.

I think next weeks game will have less points scored than game 6 of the World Series.
