The truth of the matter

I am tired. Tired of losing. Really tired of losing to TCU. Tired of losing winnable games. Tired of getting out coached. Tired of excuses. Tired of untimely injuries to anyone who looks good. Tired of bad calls consistently going against us. Tired of not being relevant in November and December. Tired of lackluster crowds at the Jones. and yes, tired of taking out my anger of losing by trolling another rrs posters.

p.s i f’ing hate losing See ya next time in positive light after we win game. 😀

The Toyota Migration

I regularly see old model Toyota pickups (pre a Tacoma) traveling south on IH 10 and towing another behind it. I’ve seen this for years. I’m kind of surprised that there are any 80s and 90s models left after all these years. But saw another caravan tonight.

They have expanded to other Japanese cars and SUVs but Toyotas still seem to be preferred.

Anyone know the destination for these caravans?

DFW media take…

Walking thru our production floor heard both the Ticket and the Fan take.
TCU struggled but survived and their offense finally pulled thru despite the unfortunate of missing there too WR.

Man I wish we could have converted one of those 4th downs or punted to keep it close. Talking heads will remember that and not the POS officials on the drive that gave TCU the lead. Also they wanted to say that TCU proved that were a playoff team ( IMO how is losing on the road to Georgia worse than having luck and the officials help you beat a sub 0.500 big 12, Tennessee is still a playoff team IMO).

and then they started knobby over the UT TCU matchup.
Glad it is basketball season but want to be somewhat relevant in football soon.

Timmy D

Deruyter has been a home run at DC this season. This defense has been a blast to watch. They tackle well, cover well, get to the QB. Only thing they haven’t done well is create turnovers.

Is Deruyter here for the long term though?
This defense has played themselves into some spotlight. Tyree Wilson is gonna be a 1st rounder.

Im a tad worried someone comes calling.

STORY: Postgame notes from Joey McGuire's press conference

- I asked coach McGuire about the QB option calls on third down. He said they called them "to get into a better fourth down." They ended up punting on one, which I asked him about the few QB option calls but he recalled a specific one so that was the explanation from him.

- Behren Morton is dealing with an ankle issue. He fought through it against OK State and he wanted to go again but they didn't want to throw him back out there to hurt it more. They'll evaluate him tomorrow.

- I asked him about the facemask call on Tyree. Here's what he said: "Well, we're up 17-13. There were a lot of conversions on that drive that, in fact three, that were - it's tough. Y'all all saw them. You saw a lot of stuff today that - I still don't understand. Without getting my tail fined, put us in a bad situation, it's really frustrating. I can't explain that right there."

- McGuire said he was proud of Jesiah Pierre. He's been wanting someone else to step up opposite of Tyree Wilson. Pierre had a lot of one-on-ones while the focus stayed on Tyree. He said TCU started to build momentum behind the run game late.

- He said he'll be upset for 24 hours then they'll focus on Kansas' visit in a week. He'll review the film tomorrow and start the prep.

- He said there are plays to be made in situations when they have the lead to keep momentum. They have to make those plays and the last two weeks the defense has played a lot of snaps in the third and fourth quarters. Losing Tony Bradford shortened the rotation on the interior line, he said. In critical situations they aren't making plays and they've lost those games.

- McGuire said they went by the decision the refs made by giving them the first down. He said there were plenty of head scratching moments and that's probably one of them. But, that drive specifically they rewarded them the first and they kicked it on fourth down.

- Bradford is expected to play next week. He lost strength in one of his shoulders so they held him out. He would've basically playing with one arm. Jerand Bradley is obviously being looked at for the big hit he took. Trey Cleveland missed today's game. He took a hit late against Baylor. He couldn't clear protocol in time to be in this one.

Joey McGuire Already Passed Wells

On the number of High School OL recruits. After wondering why we are so bad at OL I went back and looked at the Wells recruiting classes (2019-2021) and realized we only signed 6 HS offensive lineman. McGuire has already landed 9 HS OL commits/signees. @codycc64 pissed people off during the Wells tenure by pointing out the obvious, but he was 100% right.

McGuire is not Wells.

Have seen many folks saying McGuire is Wells with better hype.

Stop it. Get some help.

We have been competitive in every single game. We are recruiting better than we have, maybe, ever. McGuire hasn't even finished signing his first real recruiting class. This will take time.

Wells could not recruit. Never acknowledged failings and mistakes. Had zero fire or passion. And he hated Lubbock.

Losing sucks, and weirdly losing games that we were competitive in seems to be even harder for people to accept, but except for the fact that some don't like his fourth down decisions there's not even a comparison between Wells and McGuire. None.

4th Down’s - Tech compared to BU

For the record, I love the 4th down aggressiveness overall. I’m glad it’s a part of JM’s culture and game plan. As the program grows, the success rate will grow as well.

That being said, the 4th & 5 is aggravating me to no end. To the point I had to go back and chart Baylor's 2021 4th down attempts to see how they found success with this.

My main takeaway is Baylor was constantly going for it on 4th downs that were short and manageable, and at a way higher clip than Texas Tech has been this season (especially in their own territory).

They also, probably because they were a better team and not always behind in games, went for it in situations where they were winning or tied at a far higher clip.

Lots of data to go still for Texas Tech but here is what I found below. I’m sorry, JM, but I’m breaking the 24 hour rule.

In Joey I trust 100%.

*I excluded the 4th & 20 in OT vs UH*
*I excluded the 4th & 12 at EOG vs OSU*

It’s worth noting the only attempt by Baylor in their own territory over 3 yards was kind of similar to Tech’s 4th & 5

Baylor was down 14-17 with 8:06 left in 4Q. They went for it on 4th & 4 from their own 36! They didn’t convert. Luckily, their defense was able to force OSU into a punt. That punt also pinned Baylor’s starting position back at their own 6 which, in turn, forced a conservative 3 & Out punt back to OSU giving them a short field. OSU converts a 56 yd drive into a TD virtually sealing the game with 3:22 left.

In both situations, I wonder if field position for both Tech & Baylor would’ve been better decisions. The opponent’s typically go conservative in those end of game situations to protect their lead. The liklihood of another possession with good starting field position is probably pretty solid.

I know the analytics probably have a small percentage favor to go for it but does that mean there is a clear edge? Not necessarily, and the margins are really only captured over hundreds & thousands of reps.

The point of this is really learning/discussion purposes. This program is not a finished product and I think the 4th down analytics are included in that as well!

(Hope the graph formatted for everyone)

STORY: Things I Liked & Disliked Against TCU

The Red Raiders played the Horned Frogs well yesterday, despite the loss. We’ve pretty much discovered that this team is pretty damn good on defense while continuing to be lackluster on offense.

There was plenty to like on defense, but plenty to dislike on offense, so let’s get to it.

Liked:

Tyree Wilson & His Stellar Saturday:

I am trying to appreciate every time that Wilson suits up with the Red Raiders because there are only so many more times that it’s going to happen. Tyree is going to the league and made his mark in front of around a dozen NFL scouts this weekend.

Wilson was all over the field and ended up with 1.5 tackles for loss and half a sack, again with one of his best performances of the season.

Jesiah Pierre’s Best Game:

Pierre has been looking better as of late and broke out yesterday.

He was up there with Tyree as the most impressive player on the defensive side of the football field. He racked up five tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. I heard Pierre’s name called a ton yesterday and as a junior, will likely be a massive part of the defense next year.

DeRuyter’s continued excellence:

Tim DeRuyter has turned out to be an awesome hire. He’s turned around this defense and they put up another excellent performance before the wheels fell off in the final quarter.

There is plenty to love about the multiple coverage, disguised blitz-filled defense but it held one of the best offenses quiet early in the contest.

Kirby Hocutt and Texas Tech are going to have a hell of a job to do this offseason by keeping him around because I’m certain someone is looking at him for an open position.

Shough’s throw to Sparkman:

This may be one of the only plays that was extremely positive on offense all day.

Shough threw his best ball of the season, and possibly the best one of his Texas Tech career to Sparkman who came down with the ball in the same spot that he lost it against Baylor.

Cam’ron Valdez Finally Hitting the Field:

Valdez hasn’t been on the field all season and the idea of him suiting up failed to come to fruition on multiple occasions this season.

In garbage time, he made his season debut and broke off two explosive runs. An encouraging site for the future of the running back position.

Disliked:

The Continued Offensive Line Struggles:

This group was missing a couple of massive pieces and lost another one in Ty Buchanan, who got hurt in garbage time of his debut as a Red Raider.

The tackle position struggled once again, and it is somewhat surprising that Ethan Carde couldn’t beat out the struggling Caleb Rogers in practice this week.

We know what this group is, and it sucks to not see development at the position, but they really hurt the running game and offense as a whole, giving up four sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Injuries to the Quarterback & Other Key Players:

The Red Raiders can’t seem to stay healthy this season, especially at the quarterback position. Morton appeared to reaggravate his ankle that was injured originally against Oklahoma State.

Tech lost Sparkman, Jerand Bradley, and Tony Bradford appeared to be injured near the end of the game, so hopefully none of those guys are too hurt.

The Absence of the Tight Ends:

The tight ends received one target yesterday; it went to Henry Teeter in the end zone that was deflected.

I don’t remember seeing Mason Tharp on the field at all and Baylor Cupp only seemed to get a few snaps, I guess we will find out for sure when the grades come through later in the week. This position group is so damn talented, and it is super frustrating to see them go unused.

Special Teams’ Massive Blunder:

The punt return for a touchdown on the opening play appeared to be a lack of effort to me, a lot of guys were jogging to the football in this, and it is super frustrating as this got the crowd into the matchup.

In the end it didn’t matter but erase this and the Red Raiders are in a much better position in what turned out to be a pretty fortunate first half.

Quite Horrific Officiating:

The facemask penalty on Tyree changed this game, bar none.

Tech had a real chance to extend their lead and get off the field but instead the Frogs took the lead and all the momentum the Red Raiders had were gone.

Another awful call was the Myles Price near catch, there had to be pass interference on that one.

I Support This Coaching Staff and This Team

So I took my traditional day off to let all those vent who needed to vent. And it went as I supposed it would. It's your right to do so, but it makes me sad.

Remember, this was predicted to be a 2-3 year process towards being really competitive at the top of the conference. We are dreadfully thin as far as talent goes. Yesterday we lost our QB in the first half when we were leading and were left to play a QB who hadn't played for all practical purposes in weeks, and he was obviously still weakened from his injury. Still we led into the 4th quarter and only a bad facemask call changed the game (and that changed it tremendously).

We were playing with half our OL missing, with one of our best WRs still at home, and our other two tall WRs playing hurt. The lack of size and speed at WR really hurt us yesterday, and our WRs, other than Sparkman, did not compete as hard as I would have liked for the ball.

Nevertheless, I am still solidly behind Coach McGuire and this staff. Yes, they all have things to learn, but I believe in them and what they are trying to do. this season will sharpen them. In the meantime they are still recruiting well, in spite of all the crap being posted on this board that recruits and family are privy to read. @more classes like the one McGuire and Blanchard gathered in only 2 weeks last year and we will be where we want to be.

And I am behind these young men who play for us. They are all busting their butts for us and I owe them my allegiance and support.

Bigger, faster, stronger is on the way...but it doesn't happen overnight. And we forget in our enthusiasm for the weekly contest and our passion to become what we want to be, that it takes time. So I can not speak for you, but I will be solidly behind what this staff wants to do. and I will give them the time to do it. That may mean living through tough times, but sometimes that's what it takes. I'm a Red Raider, I'm used to doing so. Wreck em.
