CNBC 75 Most Valuable College Athletic Programs

CNBC released a pretty thorough report on college sports program values this week, compiled with help from the investment firms, access to financial data, industry experts/advisors, etc.

Not bad for Texas Tech. Highest in the Big 12. These are probably the best estimates out there right now. At #33, which is the 7th most valuable school not in the SEC or Big 10 (and thus 20 or 30 mil a year behind on TV money), behind Notre Dame, Clemson, Stanford, Florida State, Duke and Miami. If we could get into one of the better TV contracts in the next round of realignment we could move up into the very respectable spot of being in the top 25. Our momentum is certainly heading in the correct direction.

This is important because the future of college sports is still so uncertain. We know the school has put itself in a better financial posture than most of our contemporaries. The more financial flexibility we have and the more valuable we are to potential partners as the landscape continues to change, the better.

Some of this seems like it could be splitting hairs, but if the consensus of the investment/financial advisor/financial media world is that Tech is the most valuable team in the new Big 12, I won’t argue with it.
