UPDATE: Takeaways from Texas Tech’s 52-51 overtime win over ACU

Here are my initial takeaways. Quickly put together. Full thoughts will come soon enough. Content will be loaded up tonight.

Physicality

All fall camp coach talked about how physical the defense was playing & how it was a point of emphasis. Saturday night there were no hard hits by the defense, very little aggression and most of all they looked slow and unsure of where they needed to be. ACU dictated the pace and we did not take anything away. We in no way made them adjust to what we were doing.
Where was the attack and aggression? If we truly have better athletes then the coaches have made things too complicated. We should be able to impose our will to some degree.

My Rewatch Thoughts

I just finished rewatching, which is much easier when you know the results. My main takeaways:

ACU Thoughts -
#13 for ACU is a dude. That guy can really play.
Maverick McIvor played his tail off. He was decisive, threw a good ball, and was super composed. Looked like a true air raid QB.
Hats off to Keith Patterson. His crew thoroughly out coached our staff last night. He is a good man, and I hope he wins every game left on the schedule.

Tech Thoughts -
Behren, Tahj, Josh Kelly, Eakin, and Conyers are studs. I think these are all plus players in the Big 12. I thought Morton looked great, and the zip was definitely back.
DL was a bit better than I originally thought last night (a low bar, admittedly). At least for the first half. I still think our edge guys lose contain way too much, happened all the time last year.
OL really hurt us with presnap penalties. Porcher did not look very good to me.
Offensively, we were really vanilla. ACU had the whole playbook open, and I thought it was clear we were just doing the basics. We didn’t want to open up the passing game too much.
Frustrating that Micah only had a couple of plays. Need him to get lots of exposure to capitalize on things.
Defensively…. Just as bad as I remembered. Peoples got abused. We looked lost in zone at each level. LB’s had a rough game, too.

Overall, thank God we came out with a win. We better hope that Lux is a stud, and more importantly, that he stays healthy the whole year. We need to get a ton better this week. If we come out rough again, we will get lit up on the scoreboard. I’m really hopeful we don’t waste this offense and these playmakers because we finally have something on that side of the ball.

Can Tech be the 2009 Iowa Hawkeyes?

I grew up an Iowa fan, in 2009 it took Iowa blocking 2 field goals at the end of regulation to beat IAA Northern Iowa in the season opener. The fans went crazy and wanted to fire everyone. Iowa finished 11-2, Orange Bowl Chanps and ranked #7.

Since then, I don’t judge a whole lot on Week 1 games, just glad to get the W.

SPITBALLIN' Final Whistle Thoughts: Abilene Christian

Texas Tech put a “1” in the win column but there was plenty to question in this one. Some off the cuff thoughts…

-Drae McCray was dynamite in the return game. Was the best thing for the Red Raiders for three quarters. Hard to get that dude the ball a ton in the passing game but I’d like to see him in space more.

-Tahj Brooks looked a bit slimmer and seemed to have a bit more pep in the step with the ball in his hands. Solid night for him, but nothing super groundbreaking, in all honesty. Would’ve liked to see him a bit more physical, but he had a nice night, especially with the TD run.

-Morton had some nice moments, and some moments that made me a touch concerned. The sack in the first half was a ball that needed to get out. There was also a throw to Eakin on a corner route, that was completed but needed to come out quicker. The post touchdown to Kelly on the flea flicker was nice.

-Kelly showed a lot of promise, and there were a couple of times that he seemed really, really close to breaking one. The shake is there and he has some athletic ability that just hasn’t been present here lately.

-I want to watch the film before judging the OL too harshly, however, there was not enough push in the run game. I thought there was some good in pass pro, though. Talk Monday on that.

-Cofield and Carroll were really strong. I really liked what I saw from the both of them, promising. Overall, the d-front struggled, the Wildcats were able to get a ton of push in the run game and McIvor had tons of time all night

-The secondary was bad. Flat out. Not having Lux really was apparent here and the Red Raiders have a lot to work on before next week. Horn and Peoples didn’t look ready. Baskerville was slow, and it led to a 71-yard touchdown pass. I’ll likely have more after watching the film but overall, it’s not great. You’re right to be concerned.

It’s a win…Wasn’t pretty, but you’re 1-0.

33-7

Last year Oklahoma State lost to Souther Alabama 33-7. They went on to play for the Big 12 Championship and beat A&M in the Texas Bowl.

In 2021, Oklahoma State won:
23-16 against Missouri State
28-23 against Tulsa
21-20 against Boise State

They went 8-1 in the Big 12 regular season and played for a Big 12 Championship. They beat number 5 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

In 2022 Kansas State lost to Tulane 17-10 and won the Big 12 Championship game.

There are plenty of teams who start off slow and figure things out. Last year we figured things out in November. If we can figure it out by the start of October, there is a good chance we play for a Big 12 Championship. If we win that game, we're in the college football playoff.

I'm not saying it's likely but I'm also not willing to throw in the towel just yet. Tonight was embarrassing but for the P-5 teams, non-con games are essentially pre-season games. Let's see how we respond.

Distracting myself for conference re-alignment F5’ing…

After a 10-15 year hiatus, I’ve been ramping back into fantasy the past few years. Last year I went all in thanks to COVID (more free time) and managed more teams than I care to admit. The thing is, most of those were public leagues on NFL/ESPN/Sleeper with rando’s. Fantasy is much more enjoyable / worth the competition when playing with people you “know.” This year I’m trying to condense down into a few meaningful leagues.

So: Would anyone else be interested in joining a new casual RRS Fantasy league?

Setup:
  • $20 buy in
  • 10-12 teams (depending on interest)
  • First come first serve
  • PPR Scoring
  • Standard Roster/Lineups (No IDP) (if 10 teams, will Add an extra flex spot to increase competition)
  • Yahoo
  • Snake Draft - date TBD (weekend in late August)
League:
  1. Kellerfox ($)
  2. bdub60ttu ($)
  3. MidnightMatador5 ($)
  4. RedRaiderMitch ($)
  5. tStockton ($)
  6. Lamar_TTU12 ($)
  7. T3xassteelers ($)
  8. Schooey ($)
  9. Squirk ($)
  10. MrLobster420 ($)
  11. pcbryan999 ($)
  12. mattttu98 ($)
Note 1: I know there are a few other leagues that have originated in the site over the years, hopefully I’m not stepping on any toes.

Note 2: will update OP as league fills (if there is interest)
