New low

This is a new low for the program . Win or lose in OT. This is now the 2nd season in a row that’s dead before it even starts.

Something is wrong with the culture, something is broken. I like Joey, I like a lot of what he has built but ultimately the winning culture is what defines a coaching regime and something is wrong with what we’ve put together.

Another hot start that falls flat on its face after the first quarter. Almost identical to the Wyoming game….to ACU…at home

Wanted to run this by those who will read. I have significant notes on each offensive play in my excel sheet, going into detail on what happened on each play. My question is, do you want me to spend most of my time writing the offensive stuff, or write on the defense and just make my notes on each play public? If you go with offensive breakdown, likely not going to get much on the D.

Up to you all.

I'm not crazy upset with the offense last night

...but for the life of me why oh why does Morton come off the field? They bring is this guy who is going to run and everyone knows it. "He's going to run the ball," said Mary's 78 year old mom. Sheesh. Just leave Morton in there, if he's not your guy in key situations then why is even out there at all? Teams do not bring in a situational LT or situational edge. "Well we have a special play here to get 2 yards so send in a new LT, C, QB, and let 4 PSI out of the ball." Come on, that's T Ball level football.

"Sit this one out, Manning, we need to pick up 2 yards."

"Take a break Mahomes, going to let Cripple McGee here take the snap and get plowed in the backfield because we MUST HAVE a first down here."

"Hudson, Crabtree, Welker, you guys are out, sending in Fats Lindy here to take a snap and get flattened by the FCS defense."

End rant. Look the offense put up 52 points, which they needed every single one of to beat an FCS team at home that featured a host of Tech castoffs. Kudos to the offense, I'm just nitpicking having multiple QB plays. Red Raiders will win plenty of games if they score 52 points a night so I have no room to carp, just personally I find the situational QB plays to be mickey mouse nonsense.

Athletic < Skilled Player

Being athletic does not equal being a better football player. I have had a lot of concern with our recruiting strategy of recruiting “measurables” instead of skilled players. You can be tall and fast but if your football brain doesn’t keep up with the speed of the game you will play slow all day. All those athletes last night looked slow and lost against hungry “slower” football players. Maybe the reason you have position coaches evaluate recruits is to make sure a player has the right Skills to play and not just the requisite 40 time. Wes Welker would have never been offered by this recruiting system, he would have been too slow and short. This coaching issue is compounded with trying to teach “athletes” how to be football players. The year 3 results that showed up last night are an indictment on our recruiting process.

Updated Season Prediction

I entered the season at 6-9 leaning toward 8 wins.

I thought our lines would dictate our record.

I never bought the depth argument on the DLine and especially the edge. I believe pass rush is every bit as important as QB. I was hopeful our OLine would be somewhat improved. I wasn’t too worried about any other units.

Fast forward to post game 1.

We have a new concern leader. I wasn’t worried about the secondary. I put athleticism above experience in that group. Wow can’t believe I drank the kool-aid this group and coaching is pathetic. The pass rush is none existent. The OLine was bullied by an FCS team.

I’m updating my prediction to 4-7 leaning to 5.

Hype & Results

At what point, if ever, do the on-field results start matching up with the off-field hype?

After last night I’m honestly starting to wonder if this staff even has the requisite coaching ability to make their recruiting strategy worthwhile.

I mean, in year 3 of his tenure, McGuire almost lost to an FCS program led by the former DC of the Matt Wells staff whose starting offense is over 54% comprised of players who couldn’t make it at Tech. I’m not sure it gets much worse than that (outside of actually losing the goddamn game).

Final Drive Clock/Game Management

I haven’t seen this discussed yet, if so it’s buried.

On our final possession in regulation, Josh Kelly caught a 15 yd pass on 2nd and 16 to set up at 3rd and 1 on the 25. Game clock was running with 4:00 left to play. We were easily in FG range at that point. We subsequently snapped the ball early on the following 3 plays with the game clock running with a total of 59 seconds left on the play clock on those three plays. The next time the game clock would stop is when we threw an incomplete pass to the end zone on 2nd and 1. The following play was a false start with our back up QB in the game. This created a 3rd and 6 in which the targeted receiver (Kelly) ran a flat route 2 yds short of the line to gain.

Why are we still in hurry up offense in that situation?

We have one of the best short yardage backs in the country with two chances to convert a one yard gain when it’s 2nd and 1 and we decide to be cute. Why were we not running more clock and forcing ACU to spend their timeouts? This is inexcusable in my mind. It’s a failure of both the HC and OC.

Plus Side: New Gameday in the Jones

What an incredible gameday experience.

The Jones is a jewel. Don’t know what it looked like on TV, but the southside is striking in person.

Ribbon boards are sharp, crystal clear.

Sound system is well balanced. Need to up the PA mic a bit, but otherwise great.

Our entrance is otherworldly good. it was great before, but it’s now in the conversation of the best pre-game of any team in any sport in the world.

Fireworks, videography, narration by Zach Thomas, drone show…”The Show” part of the experience is in a different stratosphere from when I was in school.

And the crowd was great. This was ACU…there was no good reason for our fans to show up and be that engaged throughout other than their love of this school and community. We have some great fans that are hungry to win.

Pass rush

The secondary was no doubt bad, but the pass rush was just as big of an issue. I noticed Harvey Dyson and Washington some.. But not enough. Where was my draft pick Isaac Smith?

A good pass rush helps the secondary big time.

Hell, I thought Rodriguez and Roberts had VERY quiet games too. Though, I suppose your MLBs are only as good as your pass rush is really.

Lack of pass rush was my big red flag.

REALLY hope Adedire coming back makes more of a difference.

Seemed like we were overlooking ACU and using way too vanilla of a gameplan tonight. The analogy I'm using is we looked like we were playing in a preseason game and ACU looked like they were in the postseason.

Air Raid 2.0

I was thinking of this last night and after reading JM's post game comments in the article pinned above, I think we are dismissing something that should be obvious to us as Tech fans: The Air Raid is a great equalizer.

When properly schemed and executed, the Air Raid can take a team with less talent and enable it to achieve success against teams with better talent.

We saw and experienced this first had from 2000 to 2010.

The Air Raid like a lot of specialty offenses like the triple option, can be difficult to prepare for and handle when you have a QB that is competent and a Oline that can pass block effectively.

I was super impressed with how their OC ran it and thought at the time that we were getting "Mike Leach'ed".

The defense still sucks but hopefully DeRyuter can take something from it.

What are you looking for from Tech Week 1

This is the first off season in a long time I’m genuinely excited for the season start. Been a die hard Tech football fan since I was born but the last 5-7 years I’ve lost so much interest in the program. Joey is bringing me back in and I can’t wait until Saturday.

With that I want to see 3 main things in week 1.
1) Please don’t do the hurry up offense and just line up, let our offense (mainly our QB) get set and let him get comfortable and confident at reading the defense.
2) Related to #1 I want to see confident QB play. Let Behren sling it DOWN THE FIELD all day long and build that confidence and work out the rust. I know this may be unpopular but if that shoulder is healthy like they say it is then I want to see him throw 40+ attempts Saturday.
3) DLine. I’m scarred from years of watching our DLine just lean on the OLine with 0 pass rush. Tech typically always has at least 1 stud pass rusher but it’s not clear who that could be, yet. Hopefully someone can step up.

Curious what yall would like to see Week 1?
