SPITBALLIN' Arizona O/Utah D Notes

Watched the film of this one already since the Utah football video department got it in quickly last night and wanted to share some of my notes. Watched the first half starting at 1:45 am but finished the second half this morning.

-Fifita was impacted by a D-Line that was getting zero push. It was an ugly tape, and honestly his cracks are showing at a pretty surface level watch. Processing wasn't great and his stature doesn't help his toesy nature in the pocket.

-Utah had lengthy, physical corners who could match up with McMillian, so they played a bunch of C1 & C3, manning him up at times. Tech does not have that kind of personnel not named Bralyn Lux, so we will see.

-Really impressed with their backs. Bunch of one cut guys who can get vertical in a hurry. #7 Conley is very fast and had a couple of explosive runs.

-Mixed feelings about their offensive line. #71 is a stud in pass pro, and a stud in general, he is their best OL and will be an early pick in the spring. Their interior was getting beat up by Utah's DL, which I think is pretty pedestrian, frankly. The Utes don't have majorly built bodies up front, Tech is a bit better from that standpoint, so I think that could be a place of advantage. The LT #59 is not much of a player as well, gets beat outside but is pretty wide, so a tough ask to get around.

-This OL didn't really succeed at much in the run game, it was mostly the backs making plays. Doesn't seem like an athletic enough group to run counter to either direction. Had a couple plays where it was truly boats on parade in a zone run, however.

I'll get to their defense at some point today, but now it's time for the Tech film. UA played an ugly one offensively and still took them to the shed, so I think that film will tell more of the story. Hope you had a nice Sunday morning.

Day after two cents....

I have so many thoughts about the game last night, the games this season and the program in general. The problem is that at this point, I really don't know what to think.

We'll start with last night.

How can you criticize the team after scoring 44 points and getting a conference win against a legit opponent? We can.

Untimely penalties that stopped drives.
A late dropped TD pass which Tech ended up settling for a field goal.
Other drops during the game.
A fumble on a punt return.
Another unsuccessful fourth down try at midfield.
A dropped interception that would have iced the game.
More questionable red zone calls by our OC.
Confusion in the first half resulting in two early timeouts by Tech.
Again, zero pass rush, which allowed Cincinnati to shred our defense all night.
As good as B. Morton was last night, late in the game he scrambled and for some reason lobbed a pass into the endzone (instead of throwing it out of bounds) that could have easily been intercepted. Thankfully, it wasn't.

Maybe we were just a little lucky last night. The incomplete Morton pass I just described and two missed field goals by Cincinnati probably saved the day. Certainly, there should not have been any drama at the end.

On the positive side:
Our special teams continue to be outstanding.
The offense has sputtered at times, but overall has been very good.
The defense has been shredded this year but seems to come up with good plays at the most critical times.

The question is, is Tech a well coached team?

Yes, I am extremely happy that Tech won, but this game reminded me of the Abilene Christian game, and that's not a good thing. We beat ACU by a hair and barely hung on last night. Both could have easily been losses. But they weren't.

Joey has a knack of winning close games, that's for sure. His overall record is now 19-12 and is 2-0 in bowl games. I damn sure don't have a problem with his record. Yet I look at our defense in year three with this coaching staff and I can't believe we have zero pass rush, which as everyone knows is critical for pass defense. If this doesn't improve, it's bound to cost us down the road. You simply can't give quarterbacks all day to find receivers.

I have always believed that winning college football programs comes down to a basic formula: 50% good coaching and 50% good recruiting. So where are we?

At the end of the day, I suppose it doesn't matter how we win, as long as we win.

Weird Dream

So I’m walking down a street (residential) between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth. David is giving Eddie hell for wearing 80s track suits back in the day. I turn to David and say, “he was just imitating you, you wore them too.” Before he can respond we hear a fighter overhead and look up and see a fighter jet and what looked like a flying rifle scope scrambling balls to the wall North.

Next thing we know, the sky is darkened by fighters and some more of the flying rifle scope deals all scrambling North.

Roth says “wooh we, we need to get to the stage”

So I’m just going to sip my coffee while there’s still time and enjoy my Monday after a Tech win.

Braves-Mets Doubleheader

Anyone watching the Braves-Mets doubleheader beginning now on ESPN2? Really weird situation in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Both teams need a win to make the playoffs. If one team sweeps, the Diamondbacks replace the loser of the doubleheader in the playoffs.

Has to be a weird feeling not knowing what state you’re going to sleep in tonight.

SPITBALLIN' Final Whistle Feeling: Cincinnati

What a treat. Fun game to watch first off, and Tech did damn well to get out of it.

Some off the cuff thoughts.

-First, what a job to slow sub late. Won you the game, in all honesty. Nothing better you could’ve done.

-Thought your offense played extremely well. Morton played his best game of the season. The throw where he had pressure, reset his feet and threw a seed to Kelly on the post curl, something we haven’t seen.

-Tech stopped the run pretty well tonight. If you take away the explosives (they happened I know, thank you captain) Cincy was atrocious from an EPA standpoint, like bottom of the barrel in FBS bad. Thought it was a key for you defensively and it was absolutely huge.

-On the flip side, I thought Tech ran it pretty dang well. Obviously was not perfect, and you’re going up against a pretty good front, but Brooks got rolling after a slow start, and the QB run stuff added some really nice explosives to the mix.

-De’Braylon Carroll played one hell of a game. I am pumped to see it on film and he made a massive impact on the game.

-Really can’t get over that call from DeRuyter on the pick six. Ran a LB blitz right into a hole in the protection scheme, and it created the turnover. Just elite coordinating.

-Tough that Tech again couldn’t separate here. This game was so much closer than it had to be, as I thought Tech was the better team throughout, but the offense stalled and the defense dropped a gimme to ice the game.

-Ton more thoughts coming tomorrow/Monday, but enjoy it.

The Panhandlers

We went and saw them at the Wagner Noel Sunday night in Midland. I’ve seen and love all 4 of the guys that make up this band…and love them all.

I was skeptical how it would how it would be having them all together. Well I was blown away. They were incredible.

If they are coming to a city near you, I’d highly recommend going.

Also…a bunch of good Tech guys making this group up. Be good to support them.

UPDATE: Last night's win showed me some very promising things about this Texas Tech team

It is wild to me to think about where we were on this team almost a month ago when Texas Tech got its season rolling against Abilene Christian.

When I left the stadium a week ago after the Arizona State game, I was wildly unsatisfied with the team’s lack of a killer instinct and inability to pull away. Now again last night, the Red Raiders had a chance up 14 to keep their foot on the gas. Cincinnati found a way to keep it interesting. However, I think the Bearcats are a much better team than the Sun Devils and I found myself much more impressed with Tech’s showing last night, especially considering the slow start.

Defensively this group continues to improve, but I still think we’re a long ways away from the final product of what they can be by the season’s end.

That’s the beauty, though, behind these McGuire-led teams of the last few seasons. As the season wears on, they have consistently improved and I don’t see that changing with this team. We’re already seeing it happen.

You would certainly like to see more consistency in pass rush and that would in turn help out this young secondary. But what is undeniable about this defense is they create havoc in times where they need to most. Brendan Sorsby entered the game last night without an interception and Cincy was one of the best teams in the country in time of possession.
By the end of the night, AJ McCarty had put a “1” in Sorsby’s “INT” column of the stat book, and a fumble to start the second half when the game was tied at 24 could not have been any more perfectly timed.

Sure, Cincinnati still ended up winning TOP and the game came down to the last second, but think of how much different the complexion of the game would have been had Cincinnati gone down and scored coming out of half. How much different it makes your offensive approach if you're again playing from behind, and not from a clean slate. There's plenty of reasons to complain about the defense but in my eyes, they're wrecking shop when it matters the most and that has made a monster difference.

The issue with teams that are so young is not only are the players trying to learn how to simply be in the right positions and make the right plays on the field, but the mental game of knowing how to win is another part of that battle. I think we’re seeing in real time these young players continuing to both learn how to play, and most importantly, how to win. It showed last week in the three fourth down stops, and it showed last night with the two turnovers and the final defensive stand to limit Cincy to a 51-yard attempt.

Credit on offense goes first to Behren Morton, who really impressed me last night. I’ve been critical of Morton. I’ve been critical of his pocket presence, his downfield accuracy and placement. A good deal of us have. What is undeniable, however, is Morton has played extremely efficient at home and zero turnovers inside of The Jones so far has made a tremendous, tremendous impact on the winning football.

The 28-yard scramble reset bomb in the 4th quarter to Josh Kelly was the highlight of the game for Morton, in my opinion, but there were several other passes that he made where he gave the receiver the best chance they could have to bring it down, it just didn’t work out. Morton made good reads all night, especially in the RPO game, where I think he has had a lot of success this season.

And of course, I can’t go without mentioning Tahj Brooks. There is not really anything I can say about him that hasn’t been said already. Just know, I am acknowledging his greatness.

Now it’s time to get ready for the Arizona game, a real focal point on the schedule as the first Big 12 road test and it will be anything but easy in Tucson. If I had to guess, I’d be willing to say the chunk of us have a grasp on what gives us pause about this Red Raider team this week and moving forward. We can dive more into those gaps as the week wears on and we prepare for the Wildcats. But for now, you and I can appreciate that this team is finding ways to win and that is not something we were saying early in the season last year.

This was a gutsy performance and I can safely say my confidence in this team is rising.
