STORY: "We might be the Cardiac Kids," McGuire after massive win over Arizona

Via @C. Level on the radio...

28-22, road win on a Sunday morning in Tucson...
"We played such a good first half, we were clicking on both sides of the ball. Caused some turnovers, ended up 18-3 at half. They came out and played really, really good on defense. It was so key tonight, two things. We made them kick field goals, especially after we turned the ball over, and we caused three turnovers. We won the turnover battle. Good things happen when you do that, that's part of our plan to win, number three."

What can you say about Tim DeRuyter's side of the ball?
"That was the first thing I said to the players, had all the coaches together and said man, what a great game plan they put together. You think about it, we don't travel Chappy, Devynn Cromwell plays big tonight. CJ Baskerville has a huge interception that makes a huge difference. Horn played well, Macho played well. Having Lux back. Jacob Rodriguez did good. That's such a good offense, that quarterback is so hard to hit and we got to him at times. We covered well tonight."

What do you tell Tahj?
"I didn't say a word to him. There's nothing to say to Tahj. There ain't anybody that knows better, that's something that hasn't been his MO. Maybe that's the first two since I've been here that we've lost a football with him running, I could be totally wrong about that. You just get to what's next with him, you don't say anything. He had that big at the end."

McMillan's fumble, did you see who punched it out? Did you envision that?
"I'm pretty sure it was Jacob Rodriguez. He's our punch artist. If you ask any of the defensive players, they're gonna say that coach said it was going to happen. That kid is a first round draft pick but I thought he carried the ball loose at different times. If we could get him slowed up, I thought we could knock it out and J-Rod made me right."

Is this more fun with a little more time to enjoy it?
"I've got 24 hours to enjoy it, man. We've got such a big game in two weeks, we're coming back home and we want to ride this. I'm just proud of the guys. I just keep going back to good football traveling. Stopping the run, tonight it was more about playing coverage. We gave up some yards on the ground but we were trying to play coverage, so that was going to happen at times. It was okay, don't give up the big play. I don't think we didn't give up any huge momentum plays that changed the game."

Find a way...
"That's what this team is. That's what the Big 12 is, you know, every single week and that's what we're going to try to do....Buckle up man. If I go down, our doctor will get my heart going again, we might be the cardiac kids or whatever, but as long as were winning by one point, we're in good shape."

WR Production

I checked in on the 2024 stats of the 4 receivers who transferred out and compared them to what we have on this year’s roster.

Myles Price (Indiana)— 20 receptions, 266 yards, 0 TDs

Loic Founji (Vanderbilt)— 2 receptions, 28 yards, 0 TDs

Jerrand Bradley (Boston College)— 5 receptions, 68 yards, 2 TDs

JJ Sparkman (UTSA)— 3 receptions, 15 yards, 0 TDs.

Totals— 30 receptions, 377 yards, 3 TDs

Tech production:

Josh Kelly— 44 receptions, 514 yards, 3 TDs

Caleb Douglas— 21 receptions, 320 yards, 1 TD

Coy Eakin— 19 receptions, 319 yards, 5 TDS.

So pretty much each of our top 3 receivers this year are either outperforming or basically matching the combined production of those four who transferred out.

But what might be more interesting than that is when you move down to the #5- #8 receivers in our WR room based on production.

Jordan Brown— 7 receptions, 101 yards, 0 TDs

Johncarlos Miller— 5 receptions, 87 yards, 3 TDs

Micah Hudson— 6 receptions, 85 yards, 0 TDs

Drae McCray— 11 receptions, 65 yards, 0 TDs.

Totals— 29 receptions, 338 yards, 3 TDs.

So our #5 - #8 WRs have pretty well matched the production of the four receivers who transferred out.

Props to Joey, Kittley, Juice, Blanchard and Nance for massively upgrading the talent and production in that room.

Defense appreciation

DBs
Marion Horn was 2nd in tackles with 10. Also had 1 TFL. He seems to be improving.

Devynn Cromwell - 3rd leading tackler with 9. He was coming in and hitting people as well.

CJ Baskerville - 7 tackles. Big INT. Did well staying over the top and making tackles.

Brayln Lux - 5 tackles. Played well vs a very good WR despite being banged up.

Marquez Stevenson and Brenden Jordan - 2 tackles

LBs
Rodriguez was great. 13 Tackles. 1 Sack. Forced Fumble. Broke up that throw that led to Ledit's INT.

Ben Roberts - 5 tackles. Had at least one big hit I saw. He's good. If he could play a bit faster he would be even better.

Bryce Ramirez - 4 tackles 0.5 TFL
Charles Ester III - 3 tackles
Ansel Nedore & Harvey Dyson - 2 tackles

DLs
Wish they could have gotten some Sacks.

De'Braylon Carroll - 4 tackles. 0.5 TFL
Quincy Ledet - 1 INT and 20 yard return
Banks - 2 tackles
McAlpine, etc did okay vs Arizona OL.

BASEBALL: Some Friday Practice Observations

Got out to my first Tech baseball scrimmage of the fall this afternoon, and came away with a few things that stood out to me at Dan Law through about 4.5 innings.

-Pretty impressed by Robin Villenueve's defensive ability. The transfer from Tennessee made quite a few plays with his bright orange glove from Rocky Top, as was mentioned in some previous articles about the baseball practices. He is a shorter dude than I expected but is extremely built and put a couple good swings on a few balls.

-Peyton Schulze mixed in at 3B and I thought he took a pair of nice swings, both for singles that were sharply hit.

-Logan Hughes, the Stetson transfer, had a good build and looked good in batting practice. Had a single and a strikeout in the two at bats I saw.

-Garet Boehm has really filled out and matured physically. My initial thought was that he looked like Cade McGee. He really put in some work in the offseason and hopefully that will translate for him.

-Dominic Archilla was behind the dish and had a sharp single through the right side in this one. Going to be interesting how that battle shakes out at catcher.

-Kyeler Thompson had a double and a single in his two at bats. Really impressive frame for a JUCO kid.

-Came away feeling similar for Antonelli Savattere, who was pretty filled out and had a nice swing path. Excited for how it looks.

-Damian Bravo got some looks at second base. Didn't see any action but it was interesting to see. Came in as an infielder, so I guess it's not that surprising.

-Fr RHP Connor Mohan looked good in his two innings. Sitting 90-92 with the fastball while flashing a sharp 12-6 curveball that read 79 mph.

-Believe the Baylor transfer Stephen Sepulveda was on the mound as well. Flashed a 93 and gave up a couple hits, but it was pretty solid overall.
