STORY: Breaking Down Daniels, Stills and the West Virginia offense

Back to the regularly scheduled programming ahead of West Virginia this weekend. This is one that the Red Raiders should be able to come out on top.

For the Red Raiders, there are a few keys this weekend, starting with JT Daniels.

JT Daniels:

Daniels has melded well in Graham Harrell’s offense after a couple of struggle years with Georgia. Tim DeRuyter should have his hands full containing the quarterback he coached against at Cal earlier in his career.

In Big 12 play, Daniels has thrown for five touchdowns in three games with two interceptions. He has thrown the ball more than 37 times in all three games and played great in the loss to Kansas and win over Baylor.

Daniels is a pocket-passer, something that the Red Raiders really haven’t seen this season and the Tech pass rush could be able to get to the quarterback pretty well this week.

Daniels has looked good this season and should challenge the Tech secondary with some solid weapons on the offense.

WVU’s Offensive Weapons:

The Mountaineers have quite a few weapons in the passing game that include Bryce Ford-Wheaton, Kaden Prather, Sam James, and Reese Smith.

Ford-Wheaton is the biggest threat of the group, standing at 6’3”, 224 LBs while going for 463 yards and four touchdowns. He has explosive speed and should be quite the challenge for Rayshad Williams and Malik Dunlap.

Prather, James & Smith all receive quite a few targets per game and all are averaging over 10 yards per rececption this season. James and Prather were both mentioned by DeRuyter as game breakers that must be accounted for by the defense.

On top of the receiving weapons, West Virginia has three running backs that have recorded over 230 yards on the ground.

The leading member of that crew is Tony Mathis who has gone for 459 yards and five touchdowns while CJ Donaldson and Justin Johnson Jr. have gone for 389 yards and 235 yards, respectively, while combining for another nine touchdowns on the ground.

Stills and an experienced D-Line:

Dante Stills, who is in his fifth season of college football, leads an experienced group on the defensive line that has been able to get to the quarterback 13 times this season.

Stills along with Jordan Jefferson and Sean Martin lead this group which is without a doubt the strength of the Mountaineer defense.

Lee Kpogba is the heart and sole of the linebacking corps having made 38 total tackles, three of which for loss, along with two sacks and four quarterback hurries.

The rest of the Mountaineer defense has somewhat struggled, which is why the Tech offensive attack will likely be through the air.

Mountaineers’ secondary struggles:

West Virginia is 101st in the nation in opponent passing yards allowed per game this season, which has been a major contributor to their conference worst 31.3 points per game allowed.

Marcis Floyd, Aubrey Burks, and Hersey McLaurin are the main pieces in the third level for the Mountaineers, a group that has struggled to create turnovers despite the outlier of the Baylor game that they are coming off.

Tech should be able to throw the ball pretty well and whichever quarterback Zach Kittley and Joey McGuire roll with, the turnovers shouldn’t be a problem this week.

Desert Mountain (Arizona) 2024 tight end prospect Dillon Hipp announced his offer from Texas Tech earlier this week, his 15th recorded offer. The Red Raiders join the likes of Baylor, Iowa State, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington and several others to offer the standout junior.

per MaxPreps, Hipp lists 13 receptions for 136 yards and two (2) touchdowns through five (5) games played this season.

PROTECTING "THE JONES"

the Joey McGuire led Red Raiders are undefeated at home this season, winning a few games in dramatic fashion for the Texas Tech faithful in The Jones

protecting that home field advantage is something the new Texas Tech talked about a lot this past off-season and so far the team has responded

since West Virginia joined the conference back in 2012, the Red Raiders are 5-5 against the Mountaineers, winning in Lubbock only twice during that 10 year span - 49-14 in the 2012 season and 34-27 in the 2020 season

Neil Brown's team is 1-2 on the road this season, with a close loss to Pittsburgh and a big loss to Texas...including a big road win against Virginia Tech

these Mountaineers have been tested and the recent matchups with West Virginia and Texas Tech have led to some close games, including three (3) games decided by five (5) points or less

creating turnovers will be key for the Red Raiders in this matchup, that could be the difference between another close game at home and a comfortable conference win in front of the home crowd

----------

THE TTU QB ROOM

former four-star quarterback Behren Morton made his first start against Oklahoma State a few weeks ago, impressing in the loss and showing his potential with 39 completions for 379 yards and two (2) touchdowns passing along with 16 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown rushing

a leg injury late in the first half did noticably change the rushing game or ability to scramble for Morton in the second half, but overall you could not ask for a much better start for the redshirt freshman quarterback

multiple reports indicate that Morton took the majority of snaps with the first team offense in practices this week, but Donovan Smith's sore throwing shoulder got some much needed rest during the bye week and he could get the nod against West Virginia tomorrow - it is still anyone's guess at this point

Tyler Shough was back in shoulder pads this week and throwing this week, so it sounds like he is closer to coming back soon

this is a good problem for the Red Raiders to have, three (3) quarterbacks who can lead the offense regardless of what transpires during the season

sure, a 'good' problem when a backup is needed...but most Red Raider fans are yurning for a guy to emerge at the position. there have been several coaching changes, new offensive coordinators and injuries at the position have created a very inconsistent experience for the Texas Tech faithful for years now

since Mahomes left after the 2016 season, the QB position at Texas Tech has changed hands on an annual basis

2017 - Nic Shimonek
2018 - Alan Bowman, Jett Duffey and McLane Carter
2019 - Jett Duffey, Alan Bowman
2020 - Alan Bowman, Henry Colombi
2021 - Tyler Shough, Henry Colombi, Donovan Smith

a lot of names, not a lot of production or consistency to brag about at the quarterback position

Smith came in last season and propelled the Red Raiders to a victory in the Liberty Bowl...after the coaching change from Matt Wells to Joey McGuire, the starting spot was ultimately not given to Smith after a healthy Tyler Shough took the job this off-season

key word being 'healthy' for Shough, who has faced back to back shoulder injuries early in the last two (2) seasons since transferring to Texas Tech from Oregon

Smith came into backup Shough and has helped the Red Raiders to win games this season, however, inconsistent play in the passing game and turnovers have left some fans questioning him as the best option...now keep in mind these starts for Smith were his fourth, fifth and sixth ever starts as a college quarterback, so the book on him as a college starting quarterback is quite the short story so far

which brings me to Behren Morton, who shined in his starting debut against Oklahoma State a few weeks ago...the West Texas product was not only highly rated coming out of Eastland in the 2021 class, but he grew up a Red Raider and stayed committed to Texas Tech through the coaching changes

Morton was not only a regional standout, but he competed nationally at the Elite 11 and the kid from little ol' Eastland Texas was hanging with or beating out the national stars from bigger cities

as a redshirt freshman, Morton represents the future and that is excited to most Red Raider fans who have not been able to comfortably say who will play quarterback for their team on a week to week or year to year basis

having the quarterback position defined, even to finish out this season and definitely going into next season would be huge for the program and Joey McGuire's coaching staff

that being said, having three (3) quarterbacks is a champagne problem for the Texas Tech coaches and time will tell if Morton can step up to become 'the guy' at quarterback in Lubbock moving forward

BIG 12 POWER RANKINGS

52ca84f0-4ce1-11ed-a537-debf76edfc3c

hold your butts or look away, the purple team from Fort Worth is undefeated and the No. 1 ranked team in the conference...

1. TCU

The now No. 8 Horned Frogs were down a few scores late in the second half against Oklahoma State at home last weekend and credit to Sonny Dykes' team. They mounted a comeback and eventually won the game in overtime. Undefeated is undefeated, and this team has answered every challenge. Doing that every weekend in the Big 12 conference is very difficult, and look no further than the No. 17 ranked K-State Wildcats coming to Fort Worth this weekend. This is a potential let-down spot for the Horned Frogs, but again this team has played well and has answered every challenge so far this season. After this weekend, TCU will close the season with games against @West Virginia, Texas Tech, @Texas, @Baylor and Iowa State.

2. Oklahoma State

The now No. 11 Pokes simply blew the game last weekend, it happens. For the majority of the game, Oklahoma State was the better team and they just could not finish or score on offense late in the game. Similar to the messaging above, the Big 12 conference schedule does not care and Mike Gundy's team will turn around and host No. 20 Texas at home this weekend. If the Pokes can turn things around and win a home game against the Longhorns, then Oklahoma State will close the season with games against @Kansas State, @Kansas, Iowa State, @Oklahoma and West Virginia.

3. Kansas State

The 5-1 Wildcats are fresh off the bye week and headed to TCU for a big matchup this weekend. Many had the Wildcats as a preseason pick to win the conference, and while a lot of people scoffed at the idea, this team is a win away from sitting in the driver's seat to play for in the Big 12 Conference Championship game. With K-State coming off the bye week and TCU coming off an overtime game against a Top 10 opponent seems like a recipe for a Wildcats win, but that is why they play the games. If the Wildcats can win this weekend, then Kansas State will close the season with games against Oklahoma State, Texas, @Baylor, @West Virginia and Kansas.

4. Texas

The Longhorns were nearly caught playing with their food last weekend at home against Iowa State, who is not very good this season. I cannot say that this was a game I followed closely, but I'm imagining the 'cloud defense' from the Cyclones caused Quinn Ewers some issues. Texas was coming off a gigantic win in the Red River Rivalry a few weeks ago, so while they avoided the let down game last week, scoring only 24 points at home was a little concerning. Again, never a dull moment in the Big 12 Conference, as the Longhorns travel to Stillwater for a matchup against No. 11 Oklahoma State. This game is huge for Texas and represents a boom or bust stretch for the Longhorns who will close the season with games against @Kansas State, TCU, @Kansas and Baylor.

5. Texas Tech

The Red Raiders are coming off the bye week and host West Virginia to kick-off the second half of the season. The game will feature two (2) teams at 3-3 on the season, and by every measure Texas Tech should be favored to win at home against the Neal Brown led Mountaineers. Typically the bye week is a perceived advantage, but West Virginia played the previous Thursday evening and had the past weekend off after beating Baylor at home in a high-scoring affair. A win this weekend could propel the Red Raiders to another bowl eligible season, the first consecutive bowl eligible seasons in a while. Texas Tech will close out the season with games against Baylor, @TCU, Kansas, @Iowa State and Oklahoma.

6. Oklahoma

A home game against Kansas with a backup quarterback is exactly what the Sooners needed going into the bye week this weekend...is a crazy sentence to write. This has not been the best season for the 4-3 Sooners, but a win is a win and they rebounded from an embarrassing loss in the Red River Rivalry to Texas where they were shutout. Oklahoma fans are hoping the bye week helps the team get right as they will close the season with games against @Iowa State, Baylor, @West Virginia, Oklahoma State and @Texas Tech.

7. Kansas

After losing their starting quarterback, the shine is starting to come off the Jayhawks this season. They dropped a road game to Oklahoma, scoring 42 points in the loss. Kansas travels to Baylor for an 11am kick-off this weekend and the 5-2 Jayhawks look to get bowl eligible with a win in Waco. If the Jayhawks can find a way to win this weekend, then they will close the season with games against Oklahoma State, @Texas Tech, Texas and @Kansas State.

8. West Virginia

The 3-3 Mountaineers are coming off a home win against Baylor in a thrilling Thursday night game, so West Virginia essentially rested over the weekend going into the game week against Texas Tech. Neil Brown's team has been inconsistent this season, but as you would likely assume, they can score on offense and the Red Raiders will have to play defense at home this weekend to stay ahead. These weekly rankings change drastically every week, and a win this weekend could lead to a big jump for the Mountaineers. They will close the season with games against TCU, @Iowa State, Oklahoma, Kansas State and @Oklahoma State.

9. Baylor

The 3-3 Baylor Bears are entering the second half of the season after a road loss to West Virginia last Thursday night. After winning the conference a year ago, the Bears have been inconsistent week to week so far this season. Starting quarterback Blake Shapen suffered a head injury late in the game last week, but is expected back against Kansas this weekend. The Bears will face a backup quarterback from the Jayhawks and play at home, so this is a must-win situation for Dave Aranda and this Baylor team. They will close the season with games against @Texas Tech, @Oklahoma, Kansas State, TCU and @Texas.

10. Iowa State

The 3-4 Cyclones gave the Longhorns all they could handle last weekend, but could not finish the game and lost another Big 12 Conference game, marking an 0-4 conference record on the season. Iowa State's main issue is offense this season, the Cyclones are averaging a little over 16 points per game in conference play this season and that is simply not a recipe for success against other Big 12 teams. The good news is that the Cyclones are on a bye week this weekend and will get rested up for a home game against Oklahoma to finish the month of October. They will close the seaosn with games against West Virginia, @Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and @TCU.

have a great weekend everyone!

Needing a job late Dec/early Jan

Been a teacher for almost 25 years and the last 9 I've been a Special Education teacher. My district will not offer any insurance options that will allow me to continue my Cystic Fibrosis care so I'm looking at a new career and/or district. Live in Round. Rock but am willing to relocate if the opportunity is good. If you know of somewhere to look or someone to contact I'd appreciate it. I haven't had to look for a job since 1999!

STORY: Home, sweet home: Texas Tech returns to Lubbock to host West Virginia

What do y'all think? What are you most excited to see? How close will the game be and what are your score predictions?
I'm feeling pretty confident about this game.

Joe Rogan - Brigham Buhler episode

Episode #1873

Anyone listen to this? Its got me fully engaged on wanting to get my hormone levels checked and addressed.

This episode is 3 weeks old now, but super enlightening. Bringham Buhler is crazy smart and interesting how he exposes Big Pharma, the insurance industry, and how culpable the US government/FDA is (no big surprise there). He currently focuses on restorative medicine in Houston, but started out as a pharmaceutical rep pushing Cialis with a $17k monthly entertainment budget. He goes over how "Healthcare" is all about protecting the profit margins and how insurance controls the medical industry buy what they choose to deny in coverage.

Talks about how the holistic approach and how keeping your hormone levels (for men) at optimal levels will keep the four horsemen of death away. Also goes over the stem cell uses for regenerative tissue therapy that has shown highly effective over surgery.

Worth listening to this episode for sure. 2.5hrs though. Thank me later.

Some tidbits on Tech T&F recruiting

Tech T&F have two known commits so far, Lila Crowley (distance) out of Colorado and football/track commit Marquez Stevenson (sprints) out of Louisiana. There is possibly one other commit that Coach Robinson tweeted a wreckem notification. The unknown commit is most likely a sprinter or hurdler.
Here is a list of the known visitors and their interest from other programs:
Donovan Bradley: Tech, Kentucky, Rice, Stanford and California. He is the #1 returning hurdler in the country.
Adan Lewis: Tech, Trinity, Rice, Houston and Texas A&M. These are his final 5. He is a sprinter.
Gabriel De La O: Tech, Texas A&M Commerce and SFA. He runs distances.
Leah Acosta: Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, and LSU. She competes in throws.
Javaris Ambrose: Tech and Illinois. He competes in throws.
India Alix: Tech, Florida, FSU, Oklahoma, Georgia and Southern Cal. These are her final 6. She competes in sprints and jumps. She is considered the #1 overall girls recruit in the nation.
Also 2 other prospects are football recruits Jaylen Lloyd and Miles Thompson who will run track if they commit to Tech.
The commits should start to roll in since early signing period starts 11/9/22.
It will fun to see some surprise signees in the various sports since foreign athletes are not known until they sign.

Tech Men's Golf Validates NCAA No. 1 With Conference Matchplay Championship Win Today Over OU!

After being a little behind on the front nine, Tech golfers turned it around and won the fall Matchplay Championship this afternoon.

Ludvig Aberg had been down on the front nine but finished strong for a two up win. Callum Scott held on for a tie in his match...huge!

So much to be proud of here. OU is good but we beat them! Coach Sands is the best!

Byron Nelson and Schwab Challenge among the 30 second-tier events in the 2022-23 schedule

In the PGA Tour’s excitement Wednesday to announce the four additional tournaments that will have vastly increased purses and guaranteed star-studded fields in 2023, the PGA Tour did no favors to the so-called non-elevated events.

The problem for the excluded tournaments, which included McKinney’s AT&T Byron Nelson and Fort Worth’s Charles Schwab Challenge, wasn’t only that they were left out; it’s that the tour didn’t adequately accentuate the “2023″ part of the announcement.

It’s true that the Nelson and Schwab will be among the 30 second-tier events in the 2022-23 schedule. It’s also true that Nelson officials are disappointed not to be among the 17 elevated tournaments. But not until the last paragraph of Wednesday’s announcement did the tour explain:

“The four newly announced elevated events are for 2023 only; four entirely different tournaments could reach that designation in 2024. As always, the PGA Tour will continue to evaluate and evolve to ensure the heritage and success of every tournament on its schedule.”

Nelson tournament director Jon Drago said Wednesday that the tour notified him in a Monday afternoon telephone call that the Nelson wouldn’t be among the four remaining elevated 2023 events, which are the WM Phoenix Open, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship and Travelers Championship.

News reports and social media speculation before and after Wednesday’s official announcement caused some doom and gloom to spread over the non-elevated events. Drago said there was a lot of “misinformation and speculation” out there.

“The point the tour made to us that these decisions are made for 2023, and the long-term decisions haven’t been made yet,” Drago said. “They were made for ‘23, with a schedule that’s already been released, so was no way to kind of work around it.”

On June 22, in response to dozens of players defecting to a new Saudi Arabia-financed tour, LIV Golf, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced that there would be wholesale changes to the 2022-23 PGA Tour schedule.

Namely, that big money and star power would be infused to create 13 “elevated” PGA Tour events – plus the four major championships – that would have purses of at least $20 million.

Additionally, players who finish among the top 20 in the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program, are required to play in all elevated events for which they are eligible, as well as at least three non-elevated events.

Clearly, the four majors and the nine PGA Tour regular and playoff events that have permanently been designated as elevated events, are in strong positions for the foreseeable future. It’s the four elevated tournaments for ‘23 and everyone else that have more murky outlooks.

Though the 2022-23 PGA Tour schedule had been set before LIV Golf’s arrival, the 2023-24 and ensuing PGA Tour schedules could see shuffling as the tour evaluates how best to spread the elevated events on the calendar.

“I really respect the way they’re handling it,” Drago said of the tour. “They want it to be successful. They want all these players to at the end of the year say, ‘That worked really well. How do we make sure that the tour overall is stronger in Year Two? Let’s put 2024, 2025, 2026 plans in place based on feedback from this year.’

“All of that is to say that in ‘24 we might be an elevated event; we might not be. In ‘25 we might be. The way that we feel really fortunate is we’re in a great spot on the calendar. We’ve got a tremendous momentum going right now with the tournament. Our community, our fans are so actively engaged. The tournament’s on a great trajectory.”

The May 2022 Nelson, the second in a five-year commitment to play the event at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, earned the 54-year-old tournament’s first sellout since 2008.

The $7.6 million that tournament and host Salesmanship Club generated for the Momentous Institute was a record, increasing the all-time total raised to $180 million.

Fortuitously for the Nelson and Schwab tournaments, their biggest fan draws in recent years have been North Texas products Scottie Scheffler, Will Zalatoris and Jordan Spieth, who respectively are ranked Nos. 1, 7 and 13 in the world.

Now that all three of those players will be required to play the May 4-7 Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, it means the following week’s Nelson and the May 25-28 Schwab would be part of five straight tournaments that they have traditionally played or will be required to play.

Spieth told The Associated Press that though he doesn’t like playing more than four straight tournaments, “I love my hometown events.”

Said Drago: “We’ve got three the best players in the world who have been so loyal to us. And we feel like we’ve been loyal to them. So it feels like we’re in a really good spot to continue with our momentum. And we don’t we don’t see this as doing anything but positive for the tour.”

The 2022 Nelson purse of $9.1 million ranked 15th among tour events – including the four majors, FedEx playoffs and WGC Match Play.

Now, besides the 17 elevated events, the Nelson’s 2023 purse of $9.5 million will rank only behind Japan’s $11 million Zozo Championship, which Keegan Bradley won Sunday, and this week’s $9.5 million CJ Cup, which was relocated from Korea to South Carolina because of travel restrictions in South Korea.

Being among the non-elevated events in 2023 is far from ideal, but the Nelson and Schwab are five- and six-decade-old tournaments that certainly deserve consideration for elevated status in future years.

“Our feelings are mixed, of course, like anybody else’s,” Drago said. “But more importantly, I think what’s been really good from the Salesmanship Club is everybody sees the momentum that we have.

“We’re not going to let any sort of distraction affect that. We’ve got great fans. Our sales are really good and we haven’t even [publicly] launched sales yet.

“I will tell you that what we’re going to be selling, and the build, what you’re going to see on-site in 2023 is bigger than anything we have ever done. We’re going to have some pretty cool announcements in the next 60 days.”
