Interesting convo with coach Perry this morning. Some highlights.
What has led to J'Koby Williams' resurgence over the past two weeks?
"I think he's obviously learned the offense. I think there's a role for somebody like him. Tahj is going to grind it out, he's going to pound, get tough yards, get hit a bunch. J'Koby in space is really tough to stop, and I think Cam Dickey is too. Dickey, unfortunately, when he went in there he didn't get the opportunity to carry the ball. But those two guys are going to be really good players. I've been happy with the way they work, just great kids."
Is J'Koby's production a surprise from where he was in the fall?
"Oh, sure, I think especially with freshmen because most of those guys aren't ready to play. It kind of goes into his willingness to get in the weight room. He's put on some weight, he understands what we're doing offensively. He does a good job for me on special team's too. He's got a bigger role, so the more and more things he can handle, the more stuff we'll give him."
What led to the fake being called? The look & how much have you repped it?
"We have a bunch of stuff we work during the season. It's tough enough that Jack, he had to be able to throw the ball just like he did. Almost perfect, with a blind toss. They also have to give you that look, and they'd shown that look throughout the season. In that part of the game, we needed something, we needed a shot in the arm. Fortunately it worked because with special teams when you call something, it's got to work, because when it backfires on, it gives you the other team the same thing, their momentum."
What does Iowa State's special team's look like?
"Their punt returner is really good. The receiver number 13. Their kickoff team, they put a big bunch of big old bruisers, and they try to run right through your face. Punters been there for a while. He did some stuff, but, you know, like, so they're typical Iowa State. They're not going to beat themselves. They're a well coached team, playing complimentary football across the board. You know, defense giving up very few yards and points, and they're tackling. Their offense is taking advantage of field position, and that's how they're playing. We've got to take advantage of the chances that we have and we've got to make some stuff happen."
What're you seeing Iowa State in general?
"Great team. I mean, I can see why they're a top 10 team. They're physical, they play, I'm gonna keep saying it and it's like a broken record but they play physical football like you've got to play to win. That's where we've got to get to, we've got to be able to play physical, and I think we've made step this year, I really do. I think we've made strides in becoming a lot more physical football team to be able to win in situations like when you're playing a team like this, because they're just going to try to big boy you."
