Revisiting Preseason Expectations

So, I was curious how folks were feeling before the season and went back to check out this THREAD. Feels like people really bought in to the fool's gold of that 5-1 record and moved their goalposts (me included) and were ready to burn the whole thing down after Ft. Worth, because we were a little more rational before the season started. At least according to that thread.

I went in and pulled every prediction (throwing out some of the more "unserious" entries) and the average prediction was essentially 8-4, which is still in front of us with two home games and one winnable road game left. How you feeling now? IF we go 8-4, which was effectively the consensus, will you be sad?

Also, in before someone shreds my "methodology" apart, cuz it's probably dumb. 😂

OT looking for a sprint coach for son.

Hey everyone, figure this might be the best place to ask about this, but I'm seeing if anyone had some contacts with any track coaches in the Lubbock area. A little bit about Caden. He is in 8th grade out at Frenship Heritage and had a pretty good last track season (3rd in city with a 12.00 and is running hand timed right now in the 11.7 range). His form could use some improvement though so here I am looking for someone to help him get faster and maybe set some records.

Found out yesterday my wife will receive a job offer next week to relocate to FL with the option of 4 sites. Not definite yet but we are researching each option and weighing pros/cons to come up with our preference. I work remotely so that will not be an issue. Wanted to get a consensus from the RRS community.

I HIGHLY recommend that you watch today's LOTT

Especially the 2nd half of it where Level discusses the new landscape of college sports after the House settlement. This is going to be an entirely new paradigm of operation for athletic departments.
I was somewhat aware of this but hearing the details was very eye opening for me. Players can be signed to 1, 2, or 3 year contracts. Contracts can be bought out by either side. Hard salary cap with severe penalties for exceeding it. There will be a clearinghouse to enforce all this. Also, no plans going forward to fundraise for facilities.
Suffice to say, I'm very glad we have @codycc64 involved and it motivated me to bump up my recurring donation to the Matador Club.
It also reinforces how critical it is that we get our football program in a better place sooner rather than later.

Clock Management

Alright one last thing about Saturday and then I can move on.

We’ve all argued about what should have happened with certain play calls and 4th down decisions enough.

One thing that cannot be argued is that Joey McGuire screwed up the clock at the end of the game.

I posted this thread after the win over Iowa State in 2022. Tech had the game won with kneel downs, but they took a couple unnecessary risks with running plays. Thankfully, unlike Miami last season vs Georgia Tech, it didn’t come back to bite Tech at the time.

The example from the TCU game was not nearly as bad, and probably doesn’t change the outcome of the game, but it could have if every second counts and is easily avoidable by having someone who plays College Football 25 (or anyone who specifically does clock management) on staff.

Here is what happened…

1:38 left: Savion Williams runs for a 1st down

*timeout Texas Tech*

1:31 left: TCU run for -2

*timeout Texas Tech*

1:26 left: TCU run for -1

*timeout Texas Tech*

1:20 left: TCU run for 5

Clock goes down to :35 seconds, timeout TCU.

TCU punts, Tech gets the ball with 29 seconds left at their own 23.

McGuire’s mistake was taking the first timeout after the Williams 1st down run.

The game clock stops after 1st down runs until the ball is ready for play, while the play clock keeps going. Look at the clip above, the play clock gets down to 24 seconds and the game clock hasn’t even moved yet. Now, you do hear whistles when the play clock is around 32. It’s possible McGuire took the timeout then, or even before, so the game clock operator didn’t even bother starting it.

Tech got the ball with 29 seconds left. They probably should have gotten it with at least 37 or even 40+ seconds left.

But whether it was 5, 10 or 15 seconds for the refs to mark the ball ready for play, taking that first timeout when they did cost Texas Tech valuable time on the final possession.

And it might seem like a small thing, but small things can add up to wins or result in losses when you do them incorrectly.

Woke Up Feeling Great About This Program

Yesterday was the most frustrating loss I can remember as a 30-something Tech fan. Others might have had different games, but yesterday was it for me. You had a game that you wanted/needed and you went against everything you have been trying to build for the last two years with the field goal and not having Tahj be the one moving the ball to the center of the field. And you spit the bit.

Now that I've said that, if you don't feel good about this program then I don't know what to tell you. Come back when we are only getting 4 and 5 star players and everyone we play isn't because in college football that is the only way that you are not going to lose games.

If you can't watch the 2nd and 3rd quarters of that game + the offense in the fourth and not see what is being built then you don't want to. It's that simple. You were on the road, in conference with a true freshman QB, true freshman rb, and a redshirt freshman center and they could not stop you. You had a defense that nearly is so much younger than most of you are giving any credit for and they are forcing turnovers that this site and twitter have been complaining about for years.

Judging the quality of the coaches and players based off a win or loss is like when I used to argue with people that just because he won games doesn't mean Tim Tebow is a good NFL quarterback.

If we don't give up the terrible touchdown and win this game by 6, there is absolutely no one anyone would be calling for Zach's job. Period.

The offense was great yesterday, great. Especially in the second half with a true freshman QB. The default cannot be we lose a game we shouldn't so we should start over as a program.

I'll say again, if you don't think this program is heading in the right direction for the first time since Leach, you don't want to.

What is the craziest ex story you have?

Judging by the “would you date her thread”It seems that a lot of people have dated crazy, what was your tipping point story that said I won’t date crazy anymore.
I was dating this girl that was probably 8 hot and what I thought was 4.5 crazy (fun zone). We had a nice night and I am awoken in the middle of the night with her in my kitchen breaking my plates and glasses. Apparently I fell asleep while she was telling me something and she was mad. I told her she was being unreasonable and then she flew off the handle claiming I was calling her crazy. I swear I saw her scanning the kitchen looking for a knife to stab me. I told her maybe it’s best if we stopped seeing each other and she starts crying and starts saying she can’t live with out me, I get her dressed and out of my apartment. And then the real fun started. She would let the air out of my tires, turn the breakers off to apartment in the middle of the night (made me late to work multiple times had to buy a wind up alarm). She would follow me when I would go out (she totaled her car trying to follow me once) and walked in on a work happy hour and accused one of my coworkers of sleeping with me, which got me a trip to HR.
She was at my door one day when I got home and she said she was going to do something to harm herself so I ended up having to call her parents and they had to send her to rehab and to get pysch care. When I called them the dad’s response was not again. It was very sad. I heard from a friend of a friend she straightened out and is happily married and has 2 kids.

TLDR- don’t date crazy.

Some struggling in the Lubbock brew/beer market...

Just saw World of Beer is now closed...........Frost Brew House on 34th closed recently.........Mano Negra is leaving Cactus Alley (I have heard a rumor around town Cactus Alley has a new owner) .........did anything ever become of that brewery that had a short life on east Broadway, I think it was Auld ??

Now others have either recently opened, or seem to be on the way, so we will not be short on that segment of the market..........but there is some tightening in the category..........

BASEBALL: Tim Tadlock previews the 2024 Red & Black series

Got to chat with coach Tadlock this afternoon after the football press conference. Some highlights.

How has the fall gone so far? Seems like a lot of new faces on your roster...
"Fall's been really good, going into this week, the guys have gotten after it. From day one, we've got roughly 45 guys out there, and been intrasquading for about a month. We've got a lot of versatility within the roster, a lot of pitching, and the guys are playing pretty good right now."

What have been your initial thoughts on Peyton Schulze?
"He's played some third base, played some first base. He's proven he can hit, probably one of the better guys in the portal as far as swinging the bat goes. He's had some ups and some downs in the fall but seems like a guy that is on time an awful lot. Seems like a guy that sees the ball really well most days. He's played both corners in the infield, played some left field in his college career, gives you some options there."

What was the one thing that you felt you needed to address in the portal and do you feel like you got what you needed from the portal?
"I mean, really, with the portal, I mean, you're going in and you're trying to turn over every stone that's in there and make sure you don't have to look back a go 'hey we had an opportunity to get better,' and you didn't. I guess it would be the case. Just felt like bringing in the guys we brought in with the junior college guys were brought in, really, it's a good mix. Felt like the Villenueve kid has obviously hit a little bit. The arms with Bevis, Cebert, those guys. I didn't mention Logan Hughes from Stetson. He's an outfielder, first baseman. We got some really good baseball players in there. Got some guys on the mound that Lucas Pirko is a kid from Cal Baptist, can really pitch. Got an above average change up. Bevis has got an above average fastball. Crotchfelt from Auburn, left handed. He's been up to 97, it's hard to turn it down, even though it's not going to be that all the time. And I would tell you, 97 is not what it once was. It's, you know, it's a fastball, you've got to locate it. Some of them get hit, but he's throwing the ball really good in the last couple of weeks. Probably missing a couple there. I mean, we added some good hgih school guys too, but as far as what we wanted to address, last year we pitched really well when we went with six or seven guys so we wanted to make sure we had the right depth. As far as position player wise, you're always looking to try to get better, whether it's high school, junior college or transfer guy."

How's Brady Trombello doing?
"He's thrown two times. I think, live last two weeks, thrown the ball good. I don't think he's as strong as he was, but he's not far off. He can still pitch, obviously still got the breaking ball, so that's the secondary pitches. And he not scared throw it in there. I mean, it's, it's been really fun to watch."

What's the strength of this team as you see it now?
"I would say overall, this group is really deep on the mound and a lot of really good baseball players, and there's a lot of versatility within our lineup and within our position player group, where we can move them around if we need to. I think we're going to build around a little bit. I think we're going to show some power. Obviously. You know, the ability to learn the strike zone is is a day to day process, and that's something that all hitters kind of struggle with. You're trying to get better at that each day. I think, more than anything, I think we're talking about red, black. I mean, we're talking about Wednesday, Friday, Saturday. It's an opportunity for people to get out watch us the next Wednesday, and then the Friday for the Colorado game. And, I mean, you come out and make that judgment for yourself, but we like our group. We like the way they go about their day to day, and like the competition."
