Tough finish for Tech. Have to hit free throws to win one like this, and Tech missed them at possibly the least timely time to do so. Really tough. Some quick thoughts on the loss…
-Really strong first half from Hawkins. Eight assists and no turnovers in a game full of them. The fouls were, and proved to be, an issue. I thought he handled Iowa State’s ball pressure extremely well, something that was giving Christian Anderson some trouble.
-Speaking of Anderson, he hit some really big shots when he was off the ball in this one. What a find to McMillian in transition with just over four remaining. Kid fought through it in the second half and came alive in OT. That three and the mid-range from the stripe were two of the clutchest shots of the season.
-Toppin was really, really strong in the first half for Tech. Flashed the shot from beyond the arc, flashed the baby hook, flashed the pick and roll. He, among others, were big on the boards for Tech, as well. The ankle really caused him some issues in the second half, it was a nice job to fight through it.
-McMillian continues to be Mr. Consistent. Had a few huge offensive rebounds early and got into double-digits once again. He’s doing something special this year, been a lot of fun to watch him play ball.
-The foul trouble to Williams really took him out of the game. He struggled to play physical defense with the fouls and Iowa State was able to slow him offensively. Tech was fortunate that it’s other offensive players stepped up.
-Thought that Tech’s defensive effort was there, just untimely breaks or lapses. Curtis Jones had a big day and Tech struggled to keep the Cyclones out of the paint. ISU was attacking Hawkins down low with a bigger guard in Gilbert, and I thought he held up decently well. However, ISU made it’s money where they are best, down low.
