Sorry if this has already been discussed. I haven't been on the board much since Saturday (and those of you who were at Jones Stadium on Saturday can understand why). But I wonder if Kliff could benefit from a mentor--a proven coach who knows how to teach, coach and discipline.
We all thought there would be a learning curve, but I for one didn't expect that curve to actually be a flat line three and a half years into the experiment.
I don't expect the school would agree to spending the money for this mentor (and actually think Kliff should take about half a mil our of his salary for said mentor), but this may be the best, quickest (only?) way Kliff makes the coach we (some?) had originally thought he could be.
I don't know that this has been done elsewhere in the past (though I know there have been 'coaches in waiting', but I'm afraid Kliff is in over his head, and I'm not sure his current assistants are in a position to give him the type of advise he needs to get the program headed in the right direction.
I've been an apologist for this team for a long time, and I still believe there are several legit excuses for why things are going as we had hoped--talent, experience, etc--but by now, excuses are starting to smell like three day old fish.
I do not want to fire Kliff...but I do want this deal figured out sooner rather than later, and after what we have witnessed three times this season against 'beatable' opponents, I don't really see any progress in terms of figuring it out. So...
might a mentor be an answer? Call him the Sr. Head Coach. Find someone who is retired with skins on the wall, and bring him in through the 2017 season. Don't get rid of any coaches before then, and let's see what we've got.
