SPITBALLIN' Final Buzzer Feeling: Arkansas-Pine Bluff pres. by Open Door Financial Advisors

That was a win versus one of the worst teams in the nation. Good to get it done before you hop on a cross-country flight to Brooklyn tomorrow. Let’s jump into some thoughts.

Darrion Williams, The Savior: This was an ugly first half from the Red Raiders despite the scoreline, and Williams was the major bright spot for Tech. With 14 points on 6/8 shooting, Williams was one of the only answers for Tech against the Pine Bluff zone, that was giving Tech fits throughout.

Toppin, others, struggle vs. the zone: As mentioned above, the Red Raiders struggled to find answers versus the zone, and the Red Raiders struggles from deep didn’t help matters. UAPB did a nice job of mixing it up and it gave Tech some fits early. Tech found some rhythm offensively and eventually was able to create some separation.

Red Raiders still searching for defensive answers: Tech’s defensive ability was once again a struggle against the Golden Lions, allowing dribble penetration and easy buckets on back-cuts at times. Obviously not what you’re looking for on the heels of a strong showing against Wyoming last week, but it’s got to improve later in the week. Also thought that Tech wasn’t great on the defensive boards, but the numbers don’t really reflect that.

McMillian showing strides: Chance has continued to show strides. I think he has been Tech’s best off-ball guard through four games this year. He’s always been athletic and he has improved from an offensive standpoint, able to create his own shots and score going downhill, a very welcome development from last season.

Overton with his best showing as a Red Raider: Was impressed with Overton’s shot tonight. Felt like he shot the ball the best he has to this point while being able to play some solid defense on the night. I think his ceiling is pretty high, so I’m hopeful he can continue to improve as the season rolls along.

Obviously not a ton of conclusions drawn against this level of competition, and it didn’t feel like Tech played very well but got a massive result. Odd one, kind of as expected, hopefully Tech can look a little sharper against St. Joe’s on Thursday.

Interesting Take from a UT Buddy

SEC update.
Total number of wins against CURRENT AP “Top 25” ranked teams:
#3 Texas (0)
#7 Alabama (1, Georgia)
#8 Georgia (2, Texas, Tennessee)
#9 Ole Miss (2, Georgia, S. Carolina)
#10 Tennessee (1, Alabama)
#15 Texas A&M (0)
#19 S. Carolina (1, Texas A&M)
Total number of losses and losses against currently unranked teams:
#3 Texas (1 and 0)
#7 Alabama (2 and 1, Vanderbilt)
#8 Georgia (2 and 0)
#9 Ole Miss (2 and 2, Kentucky and LSU)
#10 Tennessee (2 and 1, Arkansas)
#15 Texas A&M (2 and 0)
#19 S. Carolina (3 and 1, LSU)
“Best win” among these seven currently ranked SEC teams:
1. Georgia, in Austin vs. now 9-1 Texas, 30-15. UT is still ranked #3, overall.
2. Alabama, at home vs. now 8-2 Georgia, 41-34. UGa is still ranked 8th, overall.
3. Ole Miss, at home vs. now 8-2 Georgia, 28-10. UGa is still ranked 8th, overall.
4. Georgia, at home vs. now 8-2 Tennessee, 34-17. That other “UT” is still ranked 10th, overall.
5. Tennessee, at home vs. now 8-2 Alabama, 24-17. Alabama is still ranked #7, overall.
“Worst loss” among these seven currently ranked SEC teams:
1. Ole Miss, at home vs. now 4-6 Kentucky, 17-to-20. UK is now 15th in the SEC.
2. Tennessee, at now 5-5 Arkansas, 14-to-19. UA is now 11th in the SEC.
3. Alabama, at now 6-4 Vanderbilt, 35-40. VU is now 10th in the SEC.
4. Texas A&M, at now 7-3 S. Carolina, 20-44. USC is now 7th in the SEC.

  • Thought for the day: the “division-less,” 16-team SEC is now kind of like a loose association of teams stranded in the “Articles of Confederation” era of American history. Its scheduling makes no sense: OU almost elicits sympathy for having to play 5 of those 7 currently ranked SEC foes this year (both “UTs,” S. Carolina, Ole Miss, and Alabama … plus recently-ranked Missouri and LSU!).
  • A&M avoids Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee (but, sure, did play — and beat — no longer ranked Missouri and LSU). And Texas looms.
  • Texas played Georgia! … and lost, in Austin. Texas’ next best SEC opponent this season? Vanderbilt? Bring on the Aggies!
  • Florida played A&M, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Ole Miss and LSU. And Miami, out-of-conference. Miss. State will have played Texas, Georgia, A&M, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Missouri. Arkansas played both “UTs,” A&M, Ole Miss, as well as LSU and Missouri.
  • It’s a mess.

Mahomes and Kelce’s homes burglarized

I can’t imagine how this could happen. I know both neighborhoods. These are gated communities in wealthy neighborhoods. There must be a thousand cameras with footage.

Broad appeal family vacation recs

Looking tot take a trip with 16-ish family members. Every couple is pitching a location over thanksgiving. Late 60s grandparents. Parents in our 40s and 30s, non parents in that same age range, 2 teens, 2 preschool and 2 babies.

We were planning to pitch San Fran but the other thread has me second guessing mostly due to the kids. We’re looking for a moderately affordable place with good fine dining, regular restaurants and bars, history and/or sights, some outdoorsy stuff and relatively easy to get around with that many people. Preferably we’ll stay in 1-2 airbnbs for 4-5 days. Everyone will be free to do what they like so we’re hoping to have mass appeal or a huge variety of options.

I’ve also considered NOLA and Boston as they check all the boxes except outdoors stuff. Open to any other suggestions though. I know what I like, but finding mass appeal is more difficult.

2024/25 NBA Season

NBA Draft is on Thursday and with @B. Golan's Suns prematurely ejaculating yesterday afternoon the offseason chaos is well underway.

The new CBA going into affect on July 1 is going to be a big talking point and a focus of what a lot of the teams in the NBA are preparing for. Without going into all the details essentially just think of the second tax apron, which is roughly $179mil of salary, as something you want to desperately avoid unless your squad is all the way in on right now. Bobby Marks tweeted out several graphics yesterday that start to help with it all.

Mavs could operate as any of a cap space team, over the cap team, tax team, 2nd apron team. Pretty much entirely dependent on Kyrie's deal and what is done on Thursday. Tax team by far the most likely though. Essentially lose Kyrie for nothing its cap space, resign Kyrie or sign and trade Kyrie and keep/trade Bertans its tax team, keep or SnT Kyrie and stretch waive Bertans its over the cap. They have #10 in the draft but virtually every NBA connected person expects the pick to be traded with most expecting a trade down and staying somewhere within the first round.

Spurs will be a cap space team. Everyone knows whats happening at #1 (drafting Kevin McCullar, obviously). As of right now thats their only first round pick (they have their second rounder at 33) but I have read some rumors they are interested in getting a second lotto pick to line up another rookie contract with Wemby.

Rockets will be a cap space team, most in the league. Picks at 4 and 20 in the first round. Some rumors the entire top 10 could be open for trade after #1 so who knows what Houston does. The Harden, FVV, Kyrie, whatever chase on 6/30 will probably be the most exciting part of their offseason.

Golan's Suns will be over the 2nd tax apron most likely. They have almost $170mil in 4 dudes. The expected Ayton trade would have to be a straight salary dump into somebodys cap space to avoid the second apron, but you dont make this move if you are concerned about that. The worst of the penalties start next offseason but the immediate ramifications will be they lost the taxpayer MLE for this offseason. They cannot acquire somebody via a sign and trade. They cannot acquire the usual 125% of outgoing salary in a trade, has to be 100% or less. Cannot acquire anybody who was bought out of a contract over $12mil. Starting day 1 of the regular season they cant aggregate salary in trades, so they cant trade Ayton and receive back 2 guys at $20mil and $10mil, it would have to match 1 for 1 (why hes probably getting traded in the next two weeks if he does get moved). They cannot trade for somebody who was originally signed in a sign and trade. Theres a bunch of frozen draft picks and moving your own draft picks to the back of the first round regardless of record rules but the Suns dont have any picks left anyways. They have 4 guys under contract and nothing but vet minimums to add to it. Somebody was going to test this and see if it was worth it at some point. It just gets to be @B. Golan. Its an absurd top 4 right now though.

The next domino across the league is probably down to the Hornets/Blazers/Pelicans. Pels want Scoot and have been willing to give away Zion according to Stein. Hornets are iffy on that deal. Blazers reportedly have more interest but Pels aint interested if Scoot goes to the Hornets.

Future of GOP

The GOP is at an historical and precarious crossroads. Lifelong Republican here. Never liked Trump as a person. Could even say I despised him as a person and even argued with other republicans on here adamantly two years ago about how he was going to tear apart the party and lose the next election with his antics, and that turned out to be true.

That said, I 100% got the appeal and supported the vast majority of his policies. And with my fear of the radical left extreme nonsense ever creeping closer to home, I voted for the lesser of two evils.

Now we find ourselves with a small but loud faction of almost religious like support for a moronic bully that I guess makes people feel empowered because he wouldn’t take any crap from the left and was able to make fun of and call out the lunacy of the left, but did so in such an irritating and undignified way.

If the Trump followers either break apart or become apathetic again, the GOP is in trouble for the foreseeable future. There needs to be a dynamic candidate that emerges to appeal to both factions of republicans and also pull some from the moderate left. Doubling down and continuing to find another Trump like candidate will be a losing proposition in my opinion.

***Tequila Thread***

There’s is/was another thread but it hasn’t been posted in since January. So, at the request of @Mason11, this shall serve as the official tequila discussion thread and hopefully get some more action.

Tequila is the greatest spirit on the planet. There’s nothing more unique than the blue Webber agave. Every season is tequila season.

What’s everyone drinking? I picked up a bottle of Mijenta Blanco today, excited to try it. Big fan of their repo.

Corky

This remembrance showed up in my feed this morning. Folks that didn't get the chance to know Corky missed one of the truly colorful legends. He knew and was friends with thousands of people. Playing six degrees of separation with him would connect you to an astronomical amount of people.
His recruiting takes from the 70s were legendary.
He had an encyclopedic knowledge of restaurants around the nation.

The event mentioned here was his " memorial". Maybe 2k folks were there ( coliseum) along with 12-15 restaurants that had booths.
Tech track and basketball athletes from several decades attended along with track and basketball coaches around the nation. Some sent video stories if they couldn't make it.
Truly a one of a kind.

A Couple Streaming Shows Worth Binging

Found a couple new series I've really enjoyed and hadn't seen mentioned around here (SIAP):

"The Gentlemen" - Netflix
Comp./Viewing Vibe: "Peaky Blinders" meets "Snatch" meets "Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels"
"Masters of the Air" - Apple TV
Comp./Viewing Vibe: "Band of Brothers" for the Air Campaign and a touch of "Saving Private Ryan" type battle action/drama
Login to view embedded media
Both series are outstanding IMO. Have really enjoyed watching MotA w/ my Dad however, as his father flew the B-24 Liberator in WW2 and never talked much about it to him and he passed when I was just 4-5 ish so I never got a chance to really know him.

Vote for my stepson (Red Raider Fan) for Oklahoma High School Football POTW

Need the help of RRS. My stepson is a Junior and he had never played high school football. He joined the team in game 4 of the season and is now leading the state in yards per carry (over 12 ypc).

In the first game of the playoffs on Friday against the #4 team in the state, he had 12 carries for 201 yards and 5 touchdowns in an 42-14 upset. 🔥

He’s a converted Red Raider fan and has attended many home games the last few years. He’ll be in a suite at OSU next weekend decked out in the scarlet and black!

You can vote as many times as you’d like, but any votes are appreciated!

OT: Christmas, Gaming PC

I'm thinking about getting my son a gaming PC for Christmas. He asked for one, but he does already have a Xbox Series S. Should I just forget it, and go another direction?

Also, so many f'n options on the gaming PC. I'd want something that we could obviously upgrade in the future, but also something that didn't need to be upgraded anytime soon. I've seen some computers seem to not have the room to upgrade, so then I have trouble knowing if I get something, will I be able to upgrade it later.

Any tips/advice? He'll be 10 in January. Also thinking he's almost to the age where a computer to do homework/school work would be beneficial.
