HOOPS: Notebook: Adams happy with season-opening win, Batcho's performance

- I opened the press conference by asking about Daniel Batcho's double-double night. He had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. He was doing it all. Adams said it wasn't a surprise to see him have such a performance. He mentioned Batcho had two good scrimmages before tonight and that he's been one of the more consistent Red Raiders on both ends of the floor.

- I then asked about the 20 turnovers despite all of the positives. He said they could talk about that for 15 minutes. He said it's been their achilles heel and they have to get it fixed. He said they told the team that they can't be a unit that hurts themselves and he mentioned the 15 offensive rebounds the Demons had. They have to go out and take games away from people and not give them away.

- CJ Williams checked into the game late for three minutes. He's a walk-on and has been a big asset during practice, Adams said. He said he earned the playing time. They played all 12 available players of the 13 on the team. Obviously, Fardaws Aimaq being the injured big on the sideline.

- De'Vion Harmon ran the point at times as well as Pop Isaacs. Adams said we'll see more of them running the ball up the floor before defenses get set.

- Jaylon Tyson said he was finally happy to represent the Texas Tech uniform during a game. Adams said it was great to see him out there especially since he's been practicing with them since last spring. He'll get better and they believe he can help him with some games, Adams said. He then mentioned his three years of eligibility left.

- Fun fact here: The Demons only shot one free throw and made it. That's all.

- Northwestern shot 67 times with 36 of those being from three-point range. Adams said they made some tough shots but they were telling the guys to get their hands up. He said the Demons will win some games with the talent on the roster.

- Kerwin Walton flashed some nice cuts on the floor and made plays, Adams said. He was impressed with his ability to drive the ball and was sorta surprised by it since Walton is focused on being a shooter.

- 24 field goals on the day for the Red Raiders and 19 of them were off of assists. They were unselfish and some of them were hockey passes, Adams said. They need to have the team slow down and be patient without forcing things.

- Adams said he thinks this team is further along on defense than they were at the start of last season.

- Elijah Fisher, Adams said, is a tough, strong young player with physicalness. He said he can run, jump, play hard and finish when he gets going. He needs to slow down at times, but he said Fisher will be one of their best on-ball defenders.

- In the end, there are good and bad things. They have a lot to improve on and they look forward to improving on those, Adams said.

Tuesday's Numbers -- Kansas Edition (pres. by Fields of Gold)

**Reminder that FCS games and garbage-time possessions are not included in these numbers***

Offensive Points Per Drive:

Texas Tech - 2.09 points per offensive possession. 75th in the country. At this point in the season, it's fair to call it what it is -- a bad P5 offense.
(conf only) - 2.35 points per drive. 9th in the conference.

Kansas - 3.24 points per offensive possession. 13th in the country
(conf only) - 3.09 points per drive. 2nd in the conference.

Back to back to back weeks, Tech's defense will be facing one of the best offenses in the country.

Offensive TD Percentage:

Texas Tech - 25.2% of possessions end with a TD play. 78th in the country.
(conf only) - 28.4% of conference possessions result in TDs. 8th in the conference.

Kansas - 42.9% of possessions end with a TD play. 10th in the country. The production this year at Kansas -- with multiple QBs -- blows my mind. They have one of the best schemes in the country right now.
(conf only) - 41.1% of drives have been TDs. Best in the conference (tied with TCU).

Offensive Turnover Percentage:

Texas Tech - 16.5% of possessions end with a turnover. 124th in the country.
(conf only) - 14.9% of possessions end with a turnover. Last in the conference.

Kansas - 9.5% of possessions end with a turnover. 37th in the country.
(conf only) - 8.9% of conf possessions are turned over. 2nd in the conference.

Offensive Yards Per Play:

Texas Tech - 5.09 yards per play. 98th in the country. We are methodical and turnover prone.

Kansas - 7.09 yards per play. 8th in the country.

Yards Gained per Big 12 Drive:

Texas Tech - 35.3 yards per drive. 8th in the conference.

Kansas -- 43.9 yards gained per drive. #1 in the conference.

I thought there was a chance our offense could be problematic this year. Like, if everything possible went against us -- QB injuries, the OL really being as bad as it seemed, WRs not stepping up, Kittley's insane production coming back to Earth, bad turnover luck, etc. Well, we're living in that worst-case scenario, and it's actually worse than I imagined it would be.

There is still some "good" offense lying dormant inside of us somewhere. And it's actually likely to show up this Saturday considering how bad Kansas' defense is. But man... this offense is painful to watch.

It's even more painful when you think about Kansas -- freakin' Kansas!!! -- playing the way they are on that side of the ball, despite having their best player knocked out for most of the year. They have a real-life schematic advantage. All the coaches they play against rave about it. I want to have that....

Defensive Points Per Drive:

Texas Tech - 2.32 points allowed per possession. 79th in the country.
(conf only) - 2.58 points allowed per drive. 6th in the conference.

Kansas - 2.95 points allowed per possession. 114th in the country.
(conf only) - 2.9 points allowed per drive. 8th in the conference.

Defensive TD Percentage:

Texas Tech - 25% of possessions end with opponents running a TD play. 48th in the country.
(conf only) - 29.6% of conf. opponents' possessions are TDs. 5th in the league.

Kansas - 37.6% of possessions end with opponents running a TD play. 115th in the country.
(conf only) - 37.3% of drives end with opponent TD. 8th in the conference.

Defensive Turnover Percentage:

Texas Tech - 11.5% of opponents' possessions end with a turnover. 59th in the country.
(conf. only) - 11.9% -- 4th in the conference.

Kansas - 17.6% of opponents' possessions end with a turnover. 6th in the country.
(conf. only) - 19.6% -- 2nd in the conference (behind Baylor... you're welcome, Baylor)

Defensive Yards Per Play:

Texas Tech - 5.54 yards allowed per play. 47th in the country.

Kansas - 6.24 yards allowed per play. 101st in the country.

Yards Allowed per Big 12 Drive:

Texas Tech - 34.8 yards per drive. 4th in the conference.

Kansas -- 56 yards allowed per drive. Last in the conference by an enormous margin.

It's unfortunate the Texas Tech defense doesn't get to play the Texas Tech offense like all the other Big 12 schools -- it would really help our defense's numbers out. Last week's defensive performance was really, really good. We have good players at the most important positions on the field on defense (cover guy / pass rusher). It's the opposite right now on offense (QB / LT / WR).

Kansas' defense is extremely Kansas-like. It can be had. Big time. There's no excuse not to move the football this Saturday like a normal P5 progrum should. I don't care who's playing QB. We should score 30+ points. If not....

State of Big 12 Basketball

1st game overreactions:

Tech is super young but have actually upgraded in talent. What that looks like by March, who knows. But I have high hopes.

KU - They are fast and they can shoot. But their size was jumping out big time. They are not a big team. They’re gonna have to fight in the paint a lot to win games.

Baylor - Best team I saw all day. That backcourt might be the best in the country. Clear favorite IMO.

TCU - Number 14 huh 😂

Texas - The Moody is the most Un-electric environment in the big 12. It looks small, it sounds small. Good luck with that.
The play by play guy just said “Hopefully the fans keep showing up.” I mean come on.
Texas looks about as good as last year by the way. Saw nothing different. Bad offense and slightly above average D. That schedule is way tougher this year too…

Iowa State - Wildcard this year. I think they’re pretty salty. That defense is really good and they can play. Well, well coached.

K State - Better than last in the conference.

Okie State - I don’t know. Not an impressive win today. Defense didn’t look tough. But we will see.

West Virginia - I think they’re better than I thought they’d be. But again 1st game, we will see.

OU - Yikes. Losing by one to Sam Houston and that non con gets a lot tougher. Might be in trouble.

Takeaways from first look: Baylor is legit, team to beat. Iowa State and Tech will have a lot to say. K State will be pretty good. Texas is exactly the same. TCU is way overrated. Self has his work cut out with KU this year.

LB Ben Roberts - 15 special teams (1 game)

2024 Presidential Vegas Odds

As of 8/12: (Covers)
-Trump +275 (26.67%)
-DeSantis +300 (25%)
-Biden +600 (14.29%)
-Harris +1400 (6.67%)
-Newsom +1400 (6.67%)
-Pence +2500 (3.85%)

The interesting parts of this for me are:
-Trump’s odds took a hit with the FBI raid and quickly came back to being the favorite, with Ron being at the top briefly
-DeSantis’ odds continue to climb

Always super interesting in Vegas odds when it comes to these elections. 2020’s was so fascinating as Biden was -240 to start Election night, Trump jumped to -800 and I basically called my fam and friends not familiar with odds that Trump was going to be re-elected and to go to bed. Then I wake up and Biden is back to -300…probably the most incredible live betting fluctuation I’ve seen.

HOOPS: Notebook: Batcho recaps double-double, Tyson debut & win over Northwestern St.

Jaylon Tyson:

-Tyson on his apparent injury:
"I caught a cramp, I'll be straight."

-Tyson on his long awaited debut: "It was a dream come true. For real. I did feel like God had had it where I needed to be a Red Raider, you know. So now I get to finally put his uniform on and rep his uniform. So it was a blessing for sure."

-Tyson on hot start from deep early: "'It's really just coming out with confidence. You know, I'm saying we've been building confidence ever since we started. We can come out aggressive. We're always gonna come out aggressive on defense, we'll become aggressive on offense."

-Tyson on what he learned last year on bench: "My little break off of basketball or whatever you call it sitting on the bench, you know, that's one part of the game that I've tried to learn, try to be a vocal leader. I'm not the best at it, you know, but I'm definitely improving on it. And that's one of my goals is being a vocal leader. So yeah, just sitting on the bench for that long. You know, I'm saying I got to learn different aspects of the game, not just going out there and playing while also supporting the teammates, you know."

Daniel Batcho:

-Batcho on double-double performance:
"I was just trying to be aggressive, set the tone early. My teammates did a good job of passing me the ball in the post and on pick and rolls."

-Batcho on the confidence the coaching staff has in him: "It's good to know, like the coaches believe in you. Like, they give you even more confidence. So he just like, makes me feel like everybody wants me to do it. Gives me confidence."

-Batcho on his growth from last year to this year: "I feel like it's really my mindset. Last year. I was really like, coming back from an injury, my first year in America. I was trying to figure it out. Find the rhythm. So I feel like more used to it, like I got I got way more confidence."

The Ultimate 2022-23 Texas Tech Basketball Preview

Thought I'd post this here. I went through every player on the roster and looked at their play style, potential fit, and how I see them all fitting together. It's a long read but probably one of the most satisfying articles I've ever written. Let me know what you think and if you have any questions!

Why TCU AD feels like he talk smack about TCU-Tech

Living in Fort Worth, I hate losing to TCU, but I can see why the AD feels like he is justified in talking some smack to Tech fans. These are the win results since 2017:
Football: Tech 1 TCU 5 (TCU currently ranked in top 5 in the nation) (TCU has one more Big 12 Championship trophy than Tech who has never been close to winning a Big 12 Championship)
MBB: Tech 7 TCU 2 (Tech and TCU both reached the Sweet 16 in 2021, although TCU has never played in the Final Four)
WBB: Tech 2 TCU 8
Soccer: Tech 0 TCU 6 Ties 2 (Tech has only score 2 goals in 8 matches)
Baseball: Tech 5 TCU 8 (the three games in FTW in 2021 included two games where Tech acted as if they did not care, which shocked and disappointed me)
Volleyball: Tech 8 TCU 5
MTennis: Tech 0 TCU 4
WTennis: Tech 6 TCU 0
Golf: I assume Tech is better than TCU in both men's and women's golf.
T&F: Tech has a natty and is better than TCU in both men's and women's track.

I will be so glad to quit losing to TCU in football, women's basketball, soccer, and baseball.

OT:Hit by 18 wheeler

I was hit by an 18 wheeler about a month ago on I35. It was nothing serious, we were in stop and go traffic. The owner of the company called right after and said he would just write a check to keep his insurance out of it. He since stopped answer my calls so I called his insurance company, they denied the claim because the driver of the truck didn’t have CDL. I talked to my insurance company and my premium will go up if I file with them. It is not a lot of money $2500 or so, but now I’m mad out of principal. My question is, should I waste the time and money of hiring an attorney. Should I take it to the main board for social justice?
