Today was one of those days. We have a position in our office that is the billing clerk. Front office, 1st person you see kind of position. The former clerk had twins, went on maternity leave, and informed us she was not going to return. As a result, we had to hire someone in a quick fix. Called a temp agency in June and interviewed a few candidates. We settled on a young lady who we felt was the best choice. She would work at City Hall, but was "employed" by the temp agency. The job, as it is set up, does not provide any benefits--insurance, retirement, PTO, etc.

At any rate, she has come to work everyday, early, and always smiling. She has handled every delicate situation with a calming demeanor and professionalism. Qualities you don't really see in a "Temp".

Last night, we had our last public hearing on the upcoming budget. There were no changes made. We obviously had the position budgeted for, so I could proceed to fill it. This morning, I brought the clerk in, a young single mother of a 10 year old son, and offered her full time employment with benefits. Told her that she exceeded all of our expectations, and that we wanted her to be a part of our team. She was stunned and started crying. Hands trembling, she shook my hand and accepted.

I am sure you guys have interactions like this all the time. But for some reason, this just seemed really cool to offer employment to someone who absolutely has earned it and appreciates it.

Have a great day guys.
