What's your perspective on yours and McGuire's sideline argument?
"Well, I don't know if you guys, he's a big Mexican food guy and I'm kind of a steak guy. So the biggest thing was, after he started yelling about, when we got back home, we're gonna go eat Mexican or steak, so I just, I kind of stood my ground, and we both said something about each other's moms and we went on from there. I know you guys know this, but it really, it came down to the difference of two seconds, because that whole time out debacle and the play clock. So I sent the punt team out. And usually in those situations, we snap the ball with three seconds. Well, coach wanted to run it down, but we'd already sent those guys out there. Well, then it was loud as all get out. And I don't know if you know I was trying to get their attention. I was like, I'm surprised they didn't flag me for being past the numbers. And then we just said, just roll with it. We didn't want to call timeout with like eight seconds left, so that's what was all. We want to win, s***, you guys know that. I mean, hell we're both competitive. I don't care who it is. He knows he don't care. We want to win. And it was just one of those heat of the moment deals. I don't like it happening, but if you can guarantee that we're going to win, we do that every game. I'll be yelling every game, and I know he damn sure will be too."
How different was that when y'all were coaching HS back in the day?
"I don't know, I think we're when we were younger. We're probably a lot more calm than we are now that we're older. Now we kind of get riled up a little bit. But, yeah, that happened. That's happened a few times in our life, but it won't be the last. Like I said, if you guarantee we're going to win, I'll keep arguing with anybody that wants to argue."
How'd you feel about your special team's effort in Stillwater?
"I thought that was the best we had. We made plays. Wished J'Koby (Williams) would've caught the one because we had them after they got the 15 yard penalty. I was thinking, man, here we go. We're fixing to hit this thing big. And, you know, he took his eyes off it and dropped it. And that was the one I wanted back. He wanted it back. He was so mad because we had a seam. Those guys have been doing good. Another big play was Kelby (Valsin). You know, it was funny, because I don't know if you guys remember, I tried the same thing there three years ago, and they called the fair catch on us. We got the ball, but they called fair catch. And we kept thinking they were going to do something because we were pretty tight, and they started widening the guy, and so worked in our advantage. I wish he would have scored. That would have been another big return, but it was, 30 something yard return. And then thought Jack, thought we covered kicks really good. I still don't understand how (it was) live when the kid did a somersault after we tackled him. That wasn't kick catch interference, he didn't fair catch it, and he he caught the ball before he hit him. So I was trying to figure out how that thing was going to work out. I didn't understand that. Everything was good. I was pleased. Our coverage was really good, kickoff and punt. And Jack did great job. Again. He's getting better and better, getting the ball up and let us cover. Drae had the big return that was big deal, because we get past the 50 yard line and we go score."
What'd you think of Stone Harrington on kickoffs?
"Stone's been nervous since he's been here for three years. Every day he's nervous around me. So I was proud of him though. Every he came in the huddle, he was nerved up and they were telling him 'just go kick and let us go cover.' That helps when you got teammates like that around you. You know, this team's awesome. These dudes are awesome to be around. They really are. They love playing. Think their culture is right with these guys. And you know, I knew Stone was nervous, and I also knew he's going to kick one out of bounds. I told Scoov (Tyler Schovanec, ST Asst.) and and coach, I said, get ready, he's going to yank one out of bounds, just that he's never done it and it's his first time in that atmosphere. So I was proud of him, though. The first one, I think he almost kicked it into the bleachers. Good to get him, good to get all the young guys we had playing. Peyton Morgan, another kid first game, goes down and makes the tackle inside the 10. That was huge. I mean, that was a big getting that for his first play. So you love seeing that with young players."
How emotional is it, senior day with Tahj?
"I thought last year, Tahj on senior day was gone, and then kind of changed things after the fact. I'll be honest. I'm probably gonna be a big sissy. I'm gonna cry because I mean that kid, man, he's meant so much to me. Our young guys, our program, Lubbock, Texas, our fans, I mean guys, I think he moved into the top four in the Big 12. He's a throwback. You don't see em like him anymore. I'm hoping those young two, he's done a great job of teaching those guys what it is to be like running back and be a good player."
What're y'all looking for in the portal at RB?
"Obviously you can't play with two running backs. I mean, you got to have more. And so with Cam's (Valdez) situation, that knee, not knowing what's going to happen there. I know he's going to try to get back, but you got to have guys. Y'all know that...Those two young kids are dynamic. Those guys are going to be real dudes. They really are. They're they're going to be good football players. But, you know, I'd like to get probably an older kid in here, just to kind of share the load with them. More so than anything. To play running back in this offense. You see what Taj goes through and those guys, you gotta be able to run block and catch the football. And I don't know how many young guys can come in and be that. You see it every year, I don't care, you know, five star, one star, no star. It's just tough to do that. And so I think getting a kid like that would probably help us. But I guarantee this, the future's bright with those two young guys."
