Texas Tech is back on the hardwood tomorrow night against Sam Houston, and now that there’s a decent sample in the metrics and Tech is heading into conference play, it’s time for the analytical breakdown on the Bearkats.

The Red Raiders enter as KenPom’s 45th team, sandwiched between Pitt and USC as the offensive metrics have had a steady climb since the Bahamas while the defensive metrics continue to slide since the injury to Devan Cambridge.

Tech has been slightly above average on offense from a shooting perspective and from an efficiency perspective while taking care of the ball at a much better clip in recent weeks.

The Red Raiders have also done a really good job of keeping their opponents off of the charity stripe with a 23.5 FTA/FGA, which is 18th best in the nation.

The one miscellaneous part of the data that has been really interesting for the Red Raiders is the fact that 12.3-percent of the shots have been blocked this season and with the nation average being 9.4-percent, Tech lands at 325th in the nation.

The Red Raiders opponent tomorrow night at the United Supermarkets Arena rolls in as the 196th team overall on KenPom and as a team that has a below average offense and one that has shot the ball with the worst of them.

The Bearkats effective field goal percentage (weights three-pointers heavier) is 45.8-percent, which is 300th in the nation.

Sam Houston’s guard play works through the point men Jaden Ray and Marcus Boykin who both carry assist rates north of 30-percent.

The main scorers on this team lie in the starting shooting guard and starting small forward Lamar Wilkerson and Davon Barnes. Both Wilkerson and Barnes take shots on 25-percent of the possessions that they are on the floor.

Wilkerson is the better shooter, shooting 46.4-percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and is without a doubt the best shooter on this Sam Houston squad.

You’ll see a mix between a big and small lineup for the Bearkats where they’ll play with four guards and the athletic forward Kian Scroggins at the five, who stands at just 6-7 and shoots north of 60-percent from the field.

There will be yet another tough matchup for Warren Washington in 6-11 center Souleymane Doumbia who has been a really good rebounder for the Bearkats, one of the best in Conference-USA thus far.

Obviously, Tech should come out victorious here and it would be a big-time failure if you drop one of the next two, but it is important to continue to stack momentum as you get ready for a date with the Longhorns in Austin, which is just ten days away.
