A few thoughts from what I saw this morning before the team heads to Frisco on Saturday...
*The offense did not have a very sharp day at all, particularly the offensive line and QB McLane Carter. The OL got whooped up on some by this D-line, both the first and second string, particularly on the interior. Now I do think some of that has to do with the revolving door at left guard right now and the fact that Jack Anderson didn't practice at right guard (Minor shoulder ding, just being held out for precautionary reasons). Carter missed a handful of throws and didn't seem to bring a ton of energy, which Coach Kingsbury was visibly frustrated with.
*At this point, I think your quarterback competition isn't very close. Jett Duffey is the clear, far-and-away best option under center for this team right now. He's decisive, is willing to throw into tight windows, and mostly makes good decisions. He needs to cut down on the turnovers a little bit - threw one to Vaughnte Dorsey this morning - but I think it's just extremely obvious that he's your best option by a significant margin.
*What I will say is that Alan Bowman continues to really impress me. In fact, if I were in charge of the depth chart, I'd have him at 2nd string behind Duffey. I think he's got the best arm on the team, and he continues to make good throws with real pop on them. He plays with confidence and steadiness, too. Really, really like what I've seen from Bowman early.
*Antoine Wesley is now taking some reps on the outside at X again, even with the first team at times, which makes me wonder where things are at with Quan Shorts. Yes, he's a guy with a ton of talent that can be a true downfield home run threat, but he hasn't produced much yet going into his junior year. Is some of that because of Dylan Cantrell and other older guys being in front of him until now? Of course. But I think he needs to take a real step forward here. I also wonder if this is a vote of confidence in Donta Thompson - who's playing quite a bit this spring - and the likes of Sterling Galban. Wesley has been your best receiver this spring to me, though.
*As for the competition at left guard, Bailey Smith and Dawson Deaton rotated with the first team at the position. Meanwhile, Madison Akamnonu is running at tackle on the second team. I think this will stay unsettled well into fall camp as Brandon Jones tries to find the best option there. I think things are settled at the other four positions, but this one may take some time to settle.
*Both Tre King and DaLeon Ward have continued to impress me at tailback. Love the bounce, patience, and physicality that both are bringing to the table.
*Worth noting that Joe Wallace dinged up his ankle in practice today. No idea on severity of the injury or not.
