I got the chance to speak with Kliff Kingsbury and Pete Robertson. Here are a few notes and quotes….
Kliff Kingsbury
Kingsbury provided his weekly injury update. The positive thing is this week’s list is shorter than the last.
Wide receiver Ian Sadler is as close to 100 percent as he possibly could be. Kingsbury pointed out how rusty he was last week, but he should be back in full form on Saturday.
Wide out Zach Austin will tough it out this week and play wearing a cast. Texas Tech will definitely need his services.
Offensive lineman Baylen Brown was limited today in practice. He’ll be evaluated this week.
The offense has seen better days than the past few weeks, particularly in the trenches. However, Kingsbury took the time to spread the blame equally.
“I think more than anything we have to protect better. We have to do some things schematically to help Pat out, and make sure the ball is getting out of his hands so it’s a combination of things. I dont think its just up front on those guys” said Kingsbury.
Obviously Texas Tech is in danger of having a season much like the last with some crucial games around the corner. Kingsbury was quick to point out the differences between last year’s team and the current roster.
“Yea, we’ll find out. I mean, we’ve lost to three of the top ten teams or whatever they’re ranked so we’ll see where we’re at this week and go from there but i don't think this year has anything to do with the last year or the previous four years since Tech’s really won
in the BIG 12” said Kingsbury “ “I do think our senior group is a special one. You have some players who played a lot of plays, some big time names , small conference guys. I think they know how to handle this after being through it a few times, i hope so. We’ll see how they do.”
Pete Robertson
There’s no question that Pete Robertson is a pivotal leader on the Red Raider defense. He brings an undeniable energy to the team when he’s out on the field. This week, he’s helping the defense move past their sloppy performance last week.
“(We) Just put it behind us. Saturday, it was a tough one. You hang onto it Saturday, but then when Sunday hits you leave it behind. You have move on to the next because if you stay on the lost we recently just had, Oklahoma State will repeat the same thing so you have to move on to the next and expect to get better” said Robertson.
I asked Robertson if he’s had time to reminisce on his career here at Tech. The senior only has four guaranteed game left. Here’s what he had to say about that idea…
“I sit back after every game (and) think where is it going to go from here, but i just let that go. God is going to bless me at the end of the day. Wherever he wants me and however he wants my life to go, only he knows. I just keep playing lights out every single game i can and enjoy every game i can” said Robertson.
It’s evident that Robertson is cut from a different cloth, so i had to ask where he got the no holds barred mentality.
“From where i came from. That's how we know how to play football. You can look at the guys in the NFL right now that’s from Longview (like) Chris Ivory, running back for the Jets, Trent Williams, left tackle for the Redskins, that’s how those guys play and that’s how we’re built. Different guys come from different areas and they play different types of football. We’re just blessed to play the game and play lights out every game.”
