While watching America gush over Mike Leach press conference humor, I ask myself "How could my alma mater fire the most entertaining football coach ever, and someone I could listen to for hours?"
The answer in, my mind, has not really been discussed- Texas Tech's leadership overestimated the bully pulpit of Craig James in December, 2009 and overreacted because they were afraid that we would become pariahs if we kept him.
At the time, C. James was had much more airplay (think Herbie now). If we knew that James would be unemployed/discredited within a couple of years thereafter, Mike would still be our coach.
Of course Mike Leach is a MEDIA DARLING (even on ESPN), and we are irrelevant. Not how we thought that would play out....
