CAMPUS WALKING TOUR

Media parking at Texas Tech is interesting. We park, I don’t know, more than a mile from the stadium. According to a map we received, it’s about a 1.6-mile meandering walk, but I’ve got to believe you can cut that down a little. Anyway, they’ve got shuttle vans that take you from your parking lot to near the stadium, which I don’t really need, but a lot of the guys have tons of heavy equipment, so it comes in handy.

But when Fredrickson Fieldhouse and I left Jones Stadium about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, there was no van in sight. So we started walking. We were going in the general direction, but not the specific direction. First we walked a little too far north, then we walked a little too far south. All we really knew is we were looking for United Spirit Arena, Tech’s gorgeous basketball coliseum, which is an architectural marvel, since it fits in with the rest of campus and doesn’t stick out like most sporting venues.

We finally did what anyone with any kind of tech awareness. We got out our iPhone map, located United Spirit Arena and walked in the general direction. Turns out we ended up getting to our car after about a 30-minute walk. Probably would have been 20 minutes if we had walked straight. When you arrive at a place in the daylight and leave in the dark, you can lose your bearings a little. We at least got to experience some of the campus, which is a great setting in a non-tradition way. Not a ton of trees in Lubbock, which is as expected. But the Southwest décor of the buildings really works. I like the campus.

We drove into the student commercial district and grabbed some wings and fries at a place called Hurricane’s. Watched some football and then headed back to the hotel, where I stayed up way too late, watching the end of Stanford-Washington State. Glad that it was time-change night. That works awfully on football weekends.
