I know this is long, and I also know this is going to come across as complaining and being a pessimist. So let me first say I am very optimistic about our future, fully support Wells, and believe that he will get the job done.
Here's what I found myself thinking this morning. If I told you back in 2014 that our head coach would eventually be an NFL head coach, and our QB would eventually be the MVP of the league, and breaking records left and right, you would be thinking "hell yeah, that would be tremendous for Tech". You would have expected 9-10 win seasons in 2015 and 2016. You would have thought that a QB who's going on to be the MVP of the NFL would surely win the Heisman at least once. All of that exposure, success, and money would surely translate to huge success on the recruiting trail right? I mean you would be extremely excited about the future of Tech football!
Instead, here we are. We managed to win a total of 7 conference games in 15 and 16. We had mediocre recruiting classes in 15 and 16, and most of the big names didn't make it to campus, didn't contribute, or contributed and then transferred. Examples are Fehoko, JF Thomas, Dauphine, Giles, Bryson Denley, etc. Then in 17 and 18 it got even worse. Smaller classes and lower ranked classes. We don't have Big 12 quality depth, and we don't have a legit QB other than Bowman. Sorry, I'm not a fan of Jett and didn't see enough of Carter to really know if he's good or not. Hopefully Bowman stays healthy this year. If not, it's going to be another long frustrating year.
Sorry this ended up turning into a short novel, but I hope you see where I'm coming from. We should be in such a better spot than we are right now, considering where Mahomes and Kliff are right now. I initially loved rolling the dice on Kliff, and I know he loved Tech and tried his best, but at the end of the day, Kliff absolutely killed us. His lack of ability to get the right staff, improve our defense, improve our recruiting, etc. It crippled us. It's very similar to Leach. He was an offensive guru, but flat out didn't care about recruiting, defense, or improving facilities. I believe Kliff at least cared about those things, but it doesn't change the fact that he failed at all of them except improving facilities.
If understand liking Kliff the former Tech QB, Kliff the person, Kliff the offensive genius.. but as a head coach, he put us 6 ft under. Also David Gibbs and his recruiting philosophy can EAD. I am glad we made the switch and even though we got unlucky on some recruits who followed Jones, or chose to stay closer to home, I am optimistic and trusting that Wells will get the job done.
TL;DR It sucks realizing that Kliff is a head coach in the NFL and Mahomes is the league MVP and we actually got worse while both of them were here. But let's support Wells and trust that he will get it done.
