I’ve thought about it some and I see why Kirby chose to keep Kliff and it makes a lot of sense. I was on the can Kliff bandwagon but there are some things you have to consider.
I know everyone likes to think long term but consider the short term as well.
1. It’s not just about total wins but who you beat. ASU, UH, Baylor, and UT are some damn nice wins and we needed them. If you told me I will lose to ISU and KSU every year but beat Texas I would gladly take it.
2. We all said we would be ok with 7 wins and that is still on the table. Bowl game will be huge for next years players development.
3. If we had a healthy kicker we win at least 1 if not 2 more games this year then it looks much different.
4. It’s the wrong damn year to look for a coach. I think ASU and Aggie could end up worse after firing their coaches. The coaches we have talked about could still be there next year.
5. $7MM isn’t chump change. Yes we can pay it but wouldn’t you rather put it toward facilities?
6. I should have put this higher but the Tech defense is going to be damn salty next year and you could finally see the peak of keeping continuity. Next years team could break through with a better schedule.
7. You have to give Kliff credit for doing it the right way and keeping our reputation intact. We aren’t rape U, some things are more important than wins.
8. Recruiting hasn’t been perfect but you can identify talent for your system which has been proven. We may be able to pick off some players now and the December deadline wasn’t something you wanted to mess with the first year.
9. The schedule this season was a bear especially with ISU coming out of nowhere and our non conference. A lot of these teams will lose a lot of players..
10. He wants to be here and there is something to say for that. He Is going to bust his ass to get it right and one more year trying that isn’t a bad idea. We have invested a lot with him, might as well see if there is some fruit there from his learning.
Honestly Kliff has been unlucky some from the TCU BS catch to Wally’s BS hand calls to having to play LSU because Aggie is Aggie. A 9 or 10 win year would have built him a lot of equity in 20I5. We are now competitive and only blown out by the top teams on our schedule.
I think if you find a QB you have a chance to be pretty good next year and I think given all of these other reasons I am ok with giving him one final year to get over the hump.
