The lead question is this: Is a program rebuild a process or is it something that can happen overnight?

Let’s take the Indiana Hoosier football program historical results from 2020-2023
  • 2023 - 3-9
  • 2022 - 4-8
  • 2021 - 2-10
  • 2020 - 6-2
Right now, they’re 10-0 in the B1G, which is phenomenal. Granted, they play in the B1G that has 3 good teams (UO, tOSU, PSU) and the rest are middling at best with some awful sprinkled in for good measure. As we all know, they hired Curt Cignetti from JMU and that guy has won at every stop as a HC and also has an impressive resume as an assistant coach. IU took 23 (according to 24/7) incoming transfers in 2024, many of whom were from JMU but actually included our own Myles Price.

My point here is a rebuild can happen overnight in today’s college football environment. I honestly have a hard time believing, despite our very bad situation coming out of the Kliff/Wells era, that we were in worse shape than Indiana 3 years ago. It remains to be seen if the IU situation is sustainable.

Other questions:
  • Is their coaching superior to ours?
  • Is their talent evaluation superior to ours?
  • Are they a “one and done” because of their reliance on the portal and the “catch lightning” effect of the JMU transfers?
  • Do you rebuild every year or try to create continuity through development? Wondering here if a “mix of both” leaves you straddling a mediocrity fence?
