I'll defend Wells just a little bit

While cracking open that 14th beer and writing that Wells should be fired for the 8th time and that he's the worst coach in Big 12 history, some of you should briefly consider this before going out to the shed for some more tar and feathers for Wells.

I count 4 Tech players, maybe 5, who could start for Texas -- Anderson, Ezukanma, Carter, and maybe Meriweather. I don't see anyone else. On a 98-degree day, where depth plays a big role, UT had a big edge there too in substitution. Yet, despite that, despite a QB that threw two brutal picks, from the end of the 1st quarter to 3 minutes remaining, Wells had a football team that had outscored the No. 8 team in the country, 49-24.

I know we're all about fairness on this board and would never overreact, but maybe, just maybe, that nearly three quarters of football has to count for something, that those guys are playing hard for that staff, and did just a few things right to essentially dominate a game it had not business dominating for 42 minutes.

Now if you want to burn him at the stake for the last 3:16, fine. If you want to rip him for some questionable late decisions, rip away. If you want to fire him for -- my God, calling time out to punt with 9 seconds left -- hey, let's fire him I guess. But a lesser coach would not have been in that position even though it was a gut-wrenching defeat .

Probably Wells would have been a lot better off with the fan base to have lost by, say, 10 points, and never had a victory all but salted away, and most would say, "Well, that's about the best we could expect considering the talent gap. We're getting there." Lose like we did today and the fingers are going to point, I get it, and they're going to point to the head coach

But if a scholarship player makes a play on an onside kick, everyone is all giddy right now. I get it, it's big boy college football, and there's no moral victories. It was one of the toughest losses that I can remember in 50-plus years as a Tech fan. Maybe if the head coach many want to can by midnight didn't have his team playing so hard for so long, it might not have been that tough.

OK, back to firing Wells and those wet dreams for Leach.
