On April 10 I got a call that a mother hopes she never has to hear. The days have been a blur since then. My son (Texas Tech '17) is recovering from surgery and will be starting cancer treatment soon. This is all new to us as we had never been through the maize of doctors, hospitals, imaging centers, emergency rooms, pharmacies, HR forms, insurance carriers, on a daily basis until 3 weeks ago.

He is meeting with an oncologist through Texas Oncology. I would like to get into see someone at MD Anderson to get a second opinion on diagnosis and treatment. What is the best way to do that? Do we go contact the insurance company first? Just call a doc at MD Anderson to try to get an appointment? Ask the other docs we've been in contact with?

When he signed up for health insurance at his new job last summer, he chose the cheapest option because he thought he was young and healthy. I worry that his case is being handled commensurate with what you get when you have the lesser insurance option. We have secondary insurance on him but do not understand how that works. I've spent so many hours researching all kinds of things I never thought I would need to know. Thought I would ask for help on this one in case someone has been through this to try to save some time.
