I've been guilty of indulging a bit too much off-topic stuff lately. So here is a football post!
Read through my post history, you'll see I'm ever the optimist, and borderline sunshine pumper (some would argue I've got a 500hp Flygt Grinder Pump full of sunshine). Some of these thoughts were inspired by good conversation with @SoCal Raider last night, during our bet payout
Kliff Kingsbury has had some rough breaks. He's also failed spectacularly in some ways. He is also a top 3 offensive mind in college football. For me, it comes down to the following two issues for Kliff and Ko's future; Obviously, a bowl game is a bare minimum requirement (even if it's 5-7, IMO). I don't see any way Big Money Donors don't put tons of pressure on Kirby to make a change if we miss the post-season 3 out of the last 4 years.
Two Major Questions for me going into the summer offseason:
1. Now that Kliff is in a CEO role, as he describes, and isn't just a glorified OC, getting involved in the defense - can he modify his offensive philosophy to better support our current defensive shortcomings? We are behind on defensive athletic talent, tiring them out with 2-minute drive after 2-minute drive is a potentially self-destructive loop that mentally unhinges and reinforces a weak defensive mindset. Can Kliff swallow his elite OC pride, and support the defense in these ways? Even if not changing his playbook, running more time off the clock between plays? Nobody doubts Kliff's ability to score 40 points a game. Can he slow the game down and lower his average to 36, to get a better return on defensive ability?
2. Can David Gibbs save Kliff's job? It's year three in his system. His "generate turnover" philosophy needs to start paying dividends. If not, he's out of time, with or without legitimate excuses of talent; he needs to get full buy-in and positive results.
What do y'all think?
