Fair Catch Awareness

Has the player IQ dropped off a cliff the past year or something? I have seen several players, both at big time NCAAF schools and the NFL, calling for a fair catch on punts inside the 10 yard line....some inside the 5. Why in the world would they do that? I've seen so many do it recently I've wondered if I missed some new strategy. That's just basic special teams 101.

I'm seriously baffled by this. Anyone else noticed it?
