Fan gamification

I love our fanbase, plain and simple. When we have the right product to root for, our environment is amazing and I firmly believe it gives us an advantage - that’s not a stretch as clearly playing at home is better.

So I was thinking about how our team preaches the “Take 3” philosophy of getting 3 turnovers and was wondering how we could gamify the fan experience with something of our own.

False starts seemed like the thing to hone in on. Home fan bases get rowdy and celebrate when we cause a false start on the visiting team already - why not lean into that? CJM up on the big screen telling our fanbase that our job is to “Take 15” every game (pre-recorded obviously)…as in get the visiting team to false start 3 times a game and take 15 yards from them. It gives our fans something to achieve that affects the game and I can’t help but think when the visitor has 2 false starts already that this doesn’t help ratchet up the noise. As a fanbase, we feel like we impacted the game and the defense gets in a little bit better situation for the next down.

Anyone ever heard of something like this? This feels like low hanging fruit for an engaged fanbase and contributes to a better game day environment. Heck, maybe team up with some local establishments to offer discounted food or something on the weeks where the crowd gets their Take 15.

I couldn’t find (didn’t look long) stats on average number of false starts by visiting college teams but did find some stuff on NFL where some people used avg false starts to highlight tough places to play and it was like 2.4 false starts per game by the visitor. Maybe it needs to be “Take 10”….whatever the stats say to make it a bit of a stretch but achievable.

Hell…keep track of it and tell the crowd when they’re nearing the record for crowd induced false starts for Jones AT&T.

CJM talks about how important the fans are to help the team. If Twitter has taught me anything about us…it’s that we are a competitive fanbase. Give us a target to hit during the game and let the competitive juices of our crowd make it hell on the opposition.

UPDATE: Tyler Shough & Adrian Frye Update

Frye is a “quad contusion” and he expects him to play Saturday.

Tyler, “same shoulder, we’ll have an idea tomorrow or Monday.” X-rays coming.

Both quotes from McGuire.

EXPANDED: “We can’t tell if it’s AC joint or Collarbone, hoping it’s AC,” McGuire said. “2-3 weeks if it’s AC, 6-8 weeks depending on what it is with the collarbone.”

LOTR: Rings of Power

Wife and I watched the first episodes last night.

Love it so far. Very high quality production...you can tell they wanted to get it right. Good cinematography, good writing and no distractingly bad acting.

Some will complain about the pace, but I thought it was a nice contrast against the modern super-speed method of story and character development. It has a grand feel to it...something Marvel and Star Wars have lost IMO.

Overall, I went into it with low expectations and found myself immersed in the story like few movies/series over the last 5 years have accomplished for me.

What they’re saying - Murray State Edition

Missed Saturdays game (traveling) but flying back now and having a peak at the Racer’s message board…

Here we go…

92 of Tech's first 99 yards are from the air.

Not a good sign, but it's still very early.

I liked what the O-Line was doing on our first drive.

Just need to match their intensity.

I hope the check was worth losing our starting QB for the season.

It looked like we were very effective WHEN DJ was in the play action offense and on the move.

I think we need to use that more (if he is not out for a good bit of time) as that keeps the defense from clogging the passing lanes in the middle. He is a speedy runner and will burn people if they don't respect him, but, then again, he can burn you throwing the ball too.

I don't think Texas Tech is as good as we made them look, but I could be wrong.

I noticed the graphic they put up during the game where they ranked #1 in passing yards in the Big 12.

So many blown coverages by our secondary in this game though.

Man, I really hope we are able to heal and didn't suffer any season-ending injuries!

Very specific Grill thread

Any of you use a gas event grill and if so, what do you have to say about it? I'm looking at an 8 burner event grill for no specific reason whatsoever other than I need to replace my other. When I moved, I had to leave my gas grill behind and I'm looking for a new gas grill in general. I already have a smoker of smokers and the griddle of griddles.

I've been itching to get one for a while and thinking about pulling the trigger over the next few weeks, but don't want to make a bad purchase. They seem much harder to come by than ever, so I'm questioning, are they that good or that bad...

2 Houston tickets (West side w/seatbacks) ***SOLD***.

Section 103 on the aisle next to Section 104. We will be there but sitting in the club for that game. Offering up our regular spot if someone is looking for good tickets. Row 49, so you will be in the shade probably around kickoff or shortly after.

If you want four together, the ticket office currently has the two seats in front of ours on row 48 for sale ($78 ea). I'm offering mine for $50 each, so less than the ticket office.

Message me if interested.

2nd largest win over an FCS opponent since 2009

I am sure that we are all deeply appreciative that the McGuire era started with the victory over an FCS opponent looking how a victory over an FCS opponent should look.

We were never really threatened.

The crowd was amazing and we dominated in all three phases.

The few complaints:
The 2nd OL is not good.
Our QB1 was injured.
Our secondary lost deep coverage a few times.
Some dude hates our uniforms.
Some folks were upset that the horse didn't sprint.

We won 63-10.
Donovan Smith has the highest QB rating after week 1 on 14-16 passing for 4TDs.
SaRodorick and Tahj destroyed tacklers behind a solid 1st team OL.
3 TEs caught passes, all for 20+ yards.
Fouonji, Bradley, and Price looked ready.
DL was hungry and very active.
McNamara may replace Bounds as our GOAT.

FCS game results since 2009 by margin of victory:

2018 77-0 Lamar
2022 63-10 Murray State
2016 69-17 Stephen F Austin
2013 61-13 Stephen F Austin
2017 56-10 Eastern Washington
2010 64-21 Weber State
2011 50-10 Texas State (joined FBS in 2012)
2012 44-6 Northwestern State
2019 45-10 Montana State
2015 59-45 Sam Houston State
2014 42-35 Central Arkansas
2021 28-22 Stephen F Austin
2020 35-33 Houston Baptist

Finally, Matt Wells.... God bless him...
