Advanced Box Score from Saturday

This pretty much confirms what I thought on Saturday night. Baylor manned us up most of the night and we just flatly couldn't beat them. Add to that a 47% pressure rate, which is by far the worst we've given up all year - it was under 10% against WVU, and you get the abomination we saw on Saturday. On the flipside, we manned them up and, while they look like all-stars compared to our stats, they really couldn't beat us much either.

They really didn't dominate us on the ground either, this wasn't TCU 2021 or OU 2016 by any means. They just stuck with it and grinded it out. What does jump out is that they ran the ball 71% of the time on 3rd and 7+, that's a ridiculous percentage. Almost as ridiculous as the 7.8 yards per play they averaged in that situation. I have a suspicion that DeRuyter wasn't prepared for the way Grimes' sequences 3rd and 4th down and instead tried to play him like the average OC, who is almost always going to pass in that position, instead of Grimes' desiring to pick up 3 or 4 yards on the ground to get a manageable 4th.

One other thing: we had 0.0 yards/carry before contact and still managed 6.7 yards/carry. Couple of things about that, it's not a sustainable way to run the ball, the offensive line has got to be better, secondly it just goes to show how monstrous SRod and Tahj really are.

OT - Defense for next year .. Do we have to go portaling big time again?

The people classified as seniors but I also know most have a covid year of eligibility have me confused

giphy.gif

How bad of trouble are we in? On paper everyone that starts is a senior besides Pierre. Not sure what that means with the covid year and who is leaving and who isn't. Rodriguez, Blidi, Kobee Minor only contributors that are not classified as seniors. I know Adedire and Wooten will get more run next year as well and a ton of the redshirt FR will be on the depth chart but that is not ideal.

Anyone have an idea of who could come back that is labeled as a senior?

Would rather talk about this than the game Saturday or the upcoming game this weekend.

Big Noon Kickoff

Deserves its own thread for a Roll Call, even if others have mentioned in other threads. But has anyone here ever been to one for Fox? I’ll admit I’ve only seen a couple episodes. But how many of y’all plan to attend? Or any sign ideas include them in this thread. We have a group of 6 of us leaving Friday morning and going to explore if we need to get up early to attend this or just make kickoff

Post-Baylor Thoughts

Pain.

Tough one to lose at home. Especially to get beat the way we did. We got our ass kicked.

Baylor’s players were better tonight on both sides of the ball. They also had a better plan that they executed at a much higher level.

Morton was not sharp at all early. Jittery. Throwing behind people. Throwing it up for grabs into triple coverage. I did think he settled in. He’s a freshman in his third start — it’s not all going to be sunshine and rainbows. But he’s still probably the QB that gives us the best chance of winning. He’s also still on track to be really, really good. This was the third start of his career. That’s something I’m going to tell myself a lot when reflecting on his performance tonight.

I don’t think Shough is healthy, playable, “right”… whatever you want to call it. His first throw was a wounded duck. A completely healthy Shough — the one that started the season for us — plays before the game was totally out of hand. The problem is Shough is likely to never get “right” at Tech. He’s compromised right now. Has missed the whole season to this point. And another QB on our team gives us the best chance to win.

Wilburn got whipped the first few series. And it jacked our drives up, but I thought he kind of settled in.

3.75 yards per play in the first half. Just 25 plays (I didn’t count the long run by Tahj to end the half since Baylor was dropping 8). That’s f*cking terrible.

Baylor ran 52 plays in the first half. 5 yards per snap. Did whatever they wanted in that half and most of the game. They would’ve scored even more points if they weren’t clocking it in the second half.

Baylor is still running the shotgun toss for 10 yards a pop. We had no answer. They had more guys blocking on the edge than we had out there to set that edge, and the guys we had out there were smaller than the guys they had blocking. That’s a really bad combination.

Two really, really good catches by Baylor WRs in the first half. The kind of plays that win games. It wasn’t bad coverage, either. They made tough catches on the football. Meanwhile, Loic dropped a ball that hit him in the face in the end zone. And Sparkman had one wrestled away from him, also in the end zone. They made plays on 50/50 balls — we didn’t.

Horrendous PI call before the half. It was a 4-point swing that didn’t really matter because of how much better Baylor was tonight.

That was the offense we saw against UH and NC State. The things we talked about back then to explain it, those things remain true — a hit-and-miss traditional run game, an OL that cannot hold its own, erratic QB play, and our WRs being non-factors.

Part of me wonders if the success we had on the ground in the second half was a result of Baylor softening up their defense, keeping things in front, and protecting their multi-possession lead. We couldn’t run the ball in the first half. But it wasn’t for a lack of effort by Tahj and SaRodorick. Those guys run really hard.

Baylor averaged about 10 yards a snap on runs on 3rd and 7 or more. Extremely frustrating. They also ran a screen in this spot for a big first down to start the 4th quarter.

Shapen was good today. He was many, many multipliers better than our QBs. He also had an easier job when you consider their effective run game, their OL, and their WRs making plays.

Joey’s gargantuan set of balls still gives us a chance. Not many coaches go for it on 4th & 7 from the 8-yard-line in the spot that we did.

Baylor Cupp had a good game. Limited snaps but he makes an impact.

Feel bad for Donovan. Our MO of going tempo backfired there. Was it necessary? No. Could it have worked for a big play? Yeah. It should’ve worked the first time when Loic dropped a TD. But it backfired big time in a huge moment in the game. And Donovan apparently still does that thing where he throws it directly to the other team. He can’t be trusted to throw the football right now.

Extremely disappointing performance by the defense. Baylor’s offense is good, no question. They’ve been good all year. But we never really stopped them. The worst part was the moments when it was obvious that they were running it (or throwing it on a few big 3rd downs) and we still couldn’t stop them.

Well… got a big game next week. Big opportunity to Jack up TCU’s season and a big opportunity to get ours back on track. I’ll be there if I can find a ticket.

Student Priority Points for games

I know we've spent a lot of time on this board talking about student attendance, most of which involves how close to the stadium they're allowed to drink before the game.

But what about implementing a scoring system similar to what other schools (and the RRC) do to determine who gets in and who gets the best seats? There are a million different ways to do this, but just an example to start off the discussion:

Go away from GA student sections and make students pull a ticket (via an app) if they want to go. You seat is determined based-on how many points you have and you find that out 2-3 days ahead of time. Each student has a unique name on the app (similar to Venmo) so that you can request tickets together. If you didn't pull a ticket in time and still decide to go, you can grab any leftovers on the app up until and even after the game begins.

You earn points for every game you attend, and the point total is inversely proportional to the price that Tech is selling tickets to for that game. So you earn less points for attending the UT game in football or the KU game in basketball than you would attending Murray St or NW La. The school could even do bonuses like 5x points for attending basketball games during winter break. You get even more points for attending soccer, softball, WBB, etc. You can also scan your ticket when you exit to get a bonus for staying the entire game. Finally, you get to roll your student points into RRC points when you join after graduating...a great incentive to join the RRC and keep coming to games.

So, just for example's sake...let's say you're an incoming freshman in 2022 that really wants to go to the Kansas game in the spring.
  • You go to 4 soccer games: 10 pts ea plus another 2 each for staying until the end = 48pts
  • You go to Murray State: 7 pts plus 2 for staying = 9 pts
  • You go to Houston: 5+2=7
  • Texas: 2+2=4
  • WVU (but you leave early): 5
  • Baylor: 3+2=5
  • You also go to 3 volleyball games: 36 total.
So even an incoming freshman could be sitting here today with 114 points in my scenario. This is someone who otherwise would have gone to the UT and Baylor football games, but that's it -- so you're juicing support for the other sports too. Heck, you could even have some mechanism for scanning a ticket to an away game into the app and giving major points for students that are going to games in Ft. Worth/Waco/Austin. Just like the RRC, outside of just home games, this score could be used to determine allocations for bowls, NCAA tourney, etc.

You could do all kinds of cool stuff with the app too. Prizes and giveaways - you could do free concessions for students or even coupons for free stuff elsewhere. You could pay for the app and its administration just through the marketing opportunities within it. You could even do the "staying" bonuses live. So a game like Baylor where it's still very much within reach at halftime, but the students start streaming out, you push out a notification that 4th quarter scans are worth 5x or something (assuming there is service for them to get it). You could even tie it into outside orgs and community service. There's an unlimited number of ways you could use this to encourage whatever behavior you want from your students.

Basically, take a scarce item that students want -- big game MBB tickets at the moment -- and use that carrot to improve attendance everywhere. Plus, you could tweak the rules year over year as kids figure out ways to game the system and different sports become more or less popular. The best part is that having the students there will help those teams win more games, so you have a positive feedback loop for your whole AD and the kids may find that soccer or VB or WBB is actually really fun when they never would have tried it out otherwise.
