Lower bowl.. section 114.

Yesterday was pretty fun, the Red Raiders looked good and there weren’t many moments where it was in doubt.

Tech ran the ball well and the defense came through when they needed too which was a key to a fifth win on the season, one away from bowl eligibility.

There’s a couple of things that stood out to me that were negative, so I’ll cover those before getting to what I want to talk about.

Disliked:

The Injury Bug:

We very well may have seen Tyree Wilson’s last game as a Red Raider. It is so frustrating that he may miss the end of his great season after getting hurt on a play that really shouldn’t have happened (thanks to a questionable penalty that extended the drive).

You also lose Landon Peterson for the year, but that may end up being a positive if Jacoby Jackson can continue to get reps and develop for the future.

The Secondaries Struggle:

There were multiple times last night when the secondary got absolutely torched. Rayshad Williams didn’t have his best night but proceeded to lay one of the best hits of the evening.

Dadrion Taylor-Demerson’s dropped interception (that was on the same possession as Tyree’s injury) was unfortunate and would’ve sealed the game much sooner if he could’ve held onto it.

Hutchings Not Scoring on the Fumble Recovery:

I more wanted an excuse to use this video in this, but man I would’ve loved to see a big man touchdown here.

Shough’s Breakout Game:

After two seasons and around six games played as a Red Raider, we finally were shown the Tyler Shough that was promised.

Shough made the right reads and didn’t turn the ball over, which is likely his best trait when he can do so. He also ran the ball really well yesterday, which is exciting for the rest of the season.

I do wonder if we hear the “we’ll play both quarterbacks” line from coach McGuire on Monday because last night’s performance from Shough, and the limited action we saw from Donovan Smith, makes it hard for me to bet against Shough being the starter the rest of the way, barring a return from Behren Morton.

Jesiah’s Continued Excellence & the Timely Turnovers:

I wrote about this last week, but Jesiah Pierre continues to develop.

He was super active in the back field last night with two sacks, two tackles for loss in his 7-tackle performance. He also forced the fumble that all but sealed the game.

The two turnovers the Red Raiders forced last night were huge, leading to 10-points. They didn’t “take three,” but they got very close and the two they got were critical timing wise.

Cam’ron Valdez Getting Extensive Run:

Valdez looked good in his 11 carries last night and has really excited me for the future of the back field after Tahj & SaRodorick move on. Him and Bryson Donnell seem to be the future at the position and Valdez has another gear that the other guys just don’t possess.

Awful incident. I haven’t seen a lot about it besides these tweets. Was anybody on the board there?

With my first post past the 20,000 mark, I want to note that I now officially have spent way too much of my life with you degenerates.

But it has been a lot of fun. A lot of other stuff too, but mostly fun.

Really appreciate this community and all it offers. Texas Tech, Texas Tech grads, and Texas Tech fans are awesome.

if TCU beats BU, ISU, and wins Big 12 title game, they're in the BCS playoffs.
A TCU loss to anyone likely drops TT to Annapolis vs a weak 6-6 Army team.
We need TCU to go to BCS, take the extra $$, and go to a much better bowl.

Sugar... KSU, unless TCU loses which would put them in Alamo.

Alamo...
OSU, BU, UT all tied with 3 Big 12 losses.
BU will lose to TCU. UT vs BU will also put a loss on one of them.
OSU with easiest path vs OU and WV and they would travel to San Antonio.
Best case... OU beats OSU in Bedlam, KU beats UT in Lawrence and TCU beats BU then they all have 4 Big 12 losses.
That would put the Alamo in play for everyone, including TT (IF) we can beat ISU and OU.

Both UT and OSU have played a couple more recently in San Antonio than TT and noone would travel to the Alamo like TT.
If TT can close with 3 straight wins then we'd come in on a high note vs other teams which would've failed to meet expectations.
In any event, a BCS TCU team really gives a 7-5 TT team a great shot at Alamo, Orlando, or at least Houston.

Another example of the inmates running the asylum in Austin, and another example of why they will always find ways to underachieve.

Kirk Bohls, who has been covering Texas since the 1970s, reported that Del Conte honed in on Dykes at SMU to replace Herman. The president of the board of regents, representing Texas money boosters, said, no, we think it's Sark based on two years as OC under Saban. Never mind his 46-35 record as a head coach. Well, guess who's going to win that power struggle?

This is from a column from Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News. Since it's behind a paywall, here's the copy and paste:

AUSTIN – TCU made an emphatic statement for its College Football Playoff dream with a 17-10 win Saturday over 18th-ranked Texas at Royal-Memorial Stadium, which may not even have been the biggest development of the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs’ week.

Because, as we learned Friday, before Jeremiah Donati hired Sonny Dykes from SMU, Texas tried to hire him, too.

Or at least Chris Del Conte did.

Donati ended up with Dykes instead, and not only was it the difference Saturday, it’s the difference in the Frogs’ 10-0 start, their best since the 2010 Rose Bowl season.

And maybe in a Texas season simply broken.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Friday that a deal between then-SMU coach Dykes and Del Conte, Texas’ athletic director, was all but done in December 2020. Sources told long-time columnist Kirk Bohls that talks went so far, it got to the point where they even discussed when Dykes would be introduced at the university where his father, Spike, the former Texas Tech coach, once worked for Darrell Royal.

Of course, it didn’t happen. Or the part where he gets hired, anyway. Of the rest, I have no doubt. Del Conte conceded in the Statesman report that he did, indeed, talk to Dykes, whom he’d recommended to SMU. Known him for years, he said. Great guy. But he described their talks as part of a nation-wide vetting process, insisting they were “nothing more than conversations with Sonny.”

Anybody believe that?

Me, neither.

But, if the report is true – and Bohls has about a half-century of reporting on his alma mater as credentials, so, yeah, it’s good enough for me – then why wasn’t Dykes on Texas’ sideline Saturday instead of TCU’s?

Because someone apparently got in the way of Del Conte’s wishes, and it was the chairman of Texas’ board of regents.

Kevin Eltife told the Statesman that he was “involved in the process from start to finish, and Sark was always at the top of the list.”

“We were very excited about Steve from the very beginning, and I’m thankful it all worked out because he’s the best man for the job," Eltife said.

Then again, Eltife wasn’t available after Saturday’s performance.

Even before the report came out, it had been widely speculated that Del Conte had little to do with the hiring of Sarkisian. Eltife, representing the interests of big-time boosters, zeroed in on the former Alabama offensive coordinator after the job he did with Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones in his only two seasons under Nick Saban. And make no mistake, those two years were Sark’s primary qualifications for the job. It certainly wasn’t his 46-35 record in seven years as head coach at Washington and USC.

For that matter, with two games left in the regular season, he’s now 11-11 at Texas.

Or one more win than Sonny has in his only season at TCU, which is a long way from over.

In building a CFP contender basically overnight, Dykes has built a prime case for national coach of the year. He inherited a program that Gary Patterson built nearly from scratch into one of the nation’s best, pound-for-pound, but it had run out of gas. The Frogs went 5-7 last season and 16-18 over the previous three combined.

Sarkisian, on the other hand, took over a program in 2021 that had gone 25-12 in the last three years of Tom Herman, whose tenure looks better all the time.

Besides his national championship experience in the SEC, what drew Eltife and the big wallets to Sark was the belief that he could attract marquee talent. No matter what else you may think, he’s lived up to that expectation. Arch Manning attended Saturday’s game with his dad, Cooper. For that matter, Quinn Ewers was a major get when he transferred from Ohio State.

But since a spectacular quarter against Alabama and a four-touchdown performance at the State Fair, Ewers’ brief career at Texas has mostly gone backward. His first three starts, he completed 68 percent of his passes. His last three? Forty-five.

Against the Horned Frogs, whose defense isn’t exactly their selling point, Ewers looked nearly as erratic as he did against Oklahoma State, finishing 17 of 39 for 171 yards and an interception. He didn’t hit anyone until three minutes into the second quarter, and even then it was only TCU’s Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson.

Ewers’ most egregious mistake might have been when he failed to notice a wide- open Bijan Robinson for what would have been a walk-in fourth-quarter touchdown. Texas failed to score on the drive, making Jahdae Barron’s subsequent 48-yard fumble return moot.

But this loss -- the second in their last three games -- was on Sarkisian more than Ewers. Bijan Robinson, who went into the game with 1,129 rushing, managed a measly 29 against TCU as Texas put up just 28 as a team. TCU’s defense never looked better and built a case for the CFP committee, but the Longhorns also rushed just 22 times.

Add that to a befuddling end to the first half in which Texas couldn’t get a play to its quarterback with 39 seconds left, and it was an ugly effort. TCU, meanwhile, never looked so good. Texas will have to live with that.

Our little girl is now 2-0 for TTU football and might have to be a frequent flyer moving forward. (wife was pregnant for UH game last year. Still counts.)

There's no way around it being a little strange with a 7 month old in your midst during a football game and everyone involved couldn't have been more welcoming.

Cameron didn't want to sleep one bit the entire game with big FOMO.

I tend to look and think long term.....I am and will be grateful for Kirby and his perspective. We have quality and stability in all of our athletic endeavors.

Our in-state rivals (even if not playing them) are and will remain aTm and UT. They are both delusional in thinking they can throw money at their programs
and automatically have success. Wealthy Aggie alums have poured out millions and are worse than when they hired their 7 million / yr. coach. UT just spend $ 180,000 on ONE week-end to recruit a Manning.
Their coach, in his second year, is 11-11. If he loses to Kansas, he may be shown the door.

Our FB, BB and Baseball coaches are high character, quality men.....plus an AD that matches these traits. We are blessed by who we have and where we are as Red Raiders. WE have STABILITY,
which is significantly more that the two rivals who believe they can use a Pot of Gold to buy success.

It won't, but this should be enough evidence to anyone as to who the problem in Arizona is. It isn't Kliff.

I loved Spike Dykes. He loved Texas Tech. He is gone now, but his son, Sonny, is a Tech Alum and is a class act. No doubt, a chip off of the old block.

I will say, that if TCU wins out and they get to play for it all, I will be proud of Sonny because I loved his daddy. If this isn’t the popular opinion in Lubbock, or with the Red Raider Nation, too bad. We will have our chances to beat them in the future and I’m sure we will with Joey at the helm.

I've been debating who to want to lose this game as it seems many people on here are too. The conclusion I've come to is that Texas winning is the worst-case scenario. The case for rooting for Texas is to expose TCU for who they really are. But looking toward the rhetoric on Sunday after a Texas win that's not what's going to happen. Texas can't be back beating an over-rated TCU team, but Texas can be back beating a TCU team that people say belongs in the top 4. This means not only will we have to hear about Texas winning but that it was a "quality win against a potential playoff team". Gross.

Flying out of ORD this AM and seeing a laughable amount of people in Cowboys Jerseys and Longhorns apparel… all in the same look.

Okay so it appears my one uncle had some store card that he didn't pay which was then sold to a debt collection company. Somebody went to my other uncle's house and he accepted a package of papers from a guy in a UPS shirt for him. Turns out its papers for a Justice of the Peace Debt Collection Case that you have to respond to in 14 day time. I have been roped into help with this. Does anyone have any experience with these matters?
