Interesting observation

Don’t know if this has been discussed within other threads but thought it was worthy of its own.

My interesting observation is for about a decade pre JM we as a fanbase were desperate to make a bowl game, to win any Big 12 game. Making a bowl during those years would’ve had dozens of threads pumped to make a bowl.

After our win in Ames I think there was only 1 maybe 2 threads about going bowling.

While some of the on field stuff can be frustrating as hell it’s good to see there is a growing expectation of bigger and better things. This program and fanbase has turned the page on the old losing culture and it’s refreshing to see. Still lots of turnover to happen on the roster to get to the next level but it does feel like as a program it’s moving the right direction for the first time in a long time.

UPDATE: If that wasn't the ugliest win Texas Tech has had this season...

Then I really don’t know what was. I thought Arizona State was ugly. I thought Cincinnati was brutal. This takes the cake.

It is absurd to me how many times this offense trots onto the field and almost looks like it is trying to throw the game away. So many times throughout the game last night, it really felt that way. I’ve never been one to voice my own frustrations in the game thread, I usually leave that to you lot, but yesterday I was sick and tired of it.

For half the game, Tech played into exactly what Iowa State wanted them to do. The ball was taken out of Tahj Brooks’ hands, Behren Morton dropped back time and time again and the Cyclones rushed three successfully, over and over again. The success this unit saw on the first two drives went completely out of the window.

And give credit to Iowa State. That is a phenomenal defense, and that secondary is probably the best Tech will see all year. When ISU is dropping eight every play, and Tech is relying on Behren Morton to try and find somebody open against that secondary whose powers were amplified by the coverages they were playing, it was like beating your head against a brick wall for two quarters of play.

It looked like the quick-hitters, RPO and play action that Tech had executed to perfection against these 3-3-5 defense were cut out in favor of long-developing pass plays that had no effect on that defense.

I made a comment to someone either the other day during the week, or maybe even during the TCU game, that I simply did not trust this offense to be able to put together a game-winning drive like it did last night. Nothing that this offense has shown this season showed me that they would have the wherewithal, the physical grit or mental toughness to string together plays like that and ultimately be able to punch it in.

For lack of a better term, that final drive was ballsy. Tech was behind the sticks twice, the result of pre-snap penalties (which I thought were rough for the first time yesterday for the first time in a while), and to me that signaled game over. When you’re staring at both a third-and-15 and fourth-and-7, I’m fully expecting the worst.

Tahj Brooks pulled the Red Raiders out of the first-and-15 to open the drive, and he finished it off on the final play. What better way to win that game than by putting the ball in your best player’s hands and letting him go to work.

One concern that I think was voiced about Jalin Conyers coming into the season was his lack of blocking prowess because Arizona State never really needed him to bring that onto the field. I have been vocal about my concern on Conyers’ usage throughout the season, but that was well-played putting him in the backfield–something Tech has shown this season– and letting him be the lead blocker.

This offense frustrated the hell out of me yesterday. But they found a way on the final drive. Also found a way on the 98-yard march down the field in the third quarter, which should not go unnoticed. And that’s, overall, what matters.

Anybody who watched understands that the defense was absolutely the reason this game was winnable into the final frame. Tim DeRuyter’s press conferences this season have been interesting because there have been times where he flat out sounds defeated. He and his unit have been hounded all year about being better, from people on social media to even Joey McGuire repeatedly saying they just had to be better on that side of the ball. Again, much like the offense, it was not pretty. The Cyclones got theirs, certainly, but more often than not the defense answered the call.

Rocco Becht was uncomfortable the whole game. I thought Harvey Dyson was strong, the stats might not reflect it but he made some good plays early, as did Braylon Rigsby. Tre McAlpine had a really nice run stuff in the back field. It was overall one of the better performances from the group up front, I thought. It also helped that DeRuyter was willing to gamble and bring extra blitzers.

Jacob Rodriguez is a special player, man. 13 total tackles, two sacks, two TFLs, another forced fumble. He is a dude.

This defensive performance felt very Arizona-y to me, reminiscent of the kind of performances that this side made a living off of two years ago. Holding ISU to two touchdowns on 13 drives, and considering how many of those ended in Tech territory, all you can do is tip your cap to the defense.

I’ve rambled on and on, I know. Earlier in the season, I made it known what I thought about this team’s lack of a killer instinct. Over the last two weeks before this game, I felt that idea started to catch on with more people. It was evident against TCU, especially.

Defense took its chances and the offense did what I thought was unthinkable in the most critical time of the game. This kind of win against Arizona State and Cincinnati was unfulfilling, in my eyes. But dang, I would be a fool to be complaining about this one.

Is there still a path to Arlington for Texas Tech?

At 4-2 in the Big 12, Texas Tech sits tied for fourth with Kansas State with the tied for second Colorado Buffaloes coming into Lubbock this weekend.

With a win over Iowa State in the bag, Texas Tech's path to the Big 12 championship game is still somewhat unlikely, but still technically possible, which is all you can ask for as we currently sit in early November.

Texas Tech's remaining schedule has three games on it, two of which being at home and a visit to Stillwater, all effectively being elimination games and this all goes out the window if Tech were to take a loss at any point the rest of the way.

However, in the scenario where Tech would win out, the Red Raiders would need help to get to the title game despite having tie-breakers over Iowa State and Colorado, the teams currently sitting in second place.

The clearest path for a 9-3 (7-2 Big 12) Tech team would be a second loss for Iowa State, and a loss from Kansas State somewhere down the stretch, but likely not from Iowa State in the regular season finale.

ISU Remaining Schedule:

11/9: at Kansas
11/16: vs. Cincinnati
11/23: at Utah
11/30: v. K-State

KST Remaining Schedule:

11/16: vs. Arizona State
11/23: vs. Cincinnati
11/30 at Iowa State

If Kansas State doesn't take a third loss on the season, the tie-breaker would follow the Big 12's tiebreakers, which goes to "win percentage against common conference opponents," which K-State is currently 3-0 against opponents on Tech's 2024 conference schedule (beat Arizona in a non-con game, so that doesn't count), with all three remaining games counting towards that. Tech sits at 2-0 in games against K-State common opponents, with all three remaining games counting towards that.

The remaining tiebreakers go beyond reasonably checking right now, but there is a path for Texas Tech to play in Arlington. We have a meaningful game in November in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday afternoon.

TLDR: Win out, KSU beats ISU, KSU loses to ASU/Cincy.

STORY: The Breakdown - Iowa State pres. by All Hands Craft Cocktails

First off, massive win for the program last night. It feels really good to wake up on a Sunday after a win over No. 11 on the road, no matter how it looked to the naked eye.

Gonna jump into some of my more refined thoughts after watching the film followed by the charting offensively that provides a bit more nuance on each play.

-The first quarter was really, really impressive offensively. Had a good mix of picking on ISU’s hard crashing defenders with RPOs and very strong execution in the passing game. Morton came out on fire and it changed in the second quarter, largely due to what ISU was doing.

-ISU defensively was making Morton beat them after the first quarter. Dropping eight, sending three and I thought that Tech’s offensive structure lacked answers to create winners in the dropback game during that stretch. I also feel like Morton was playing a bit fast from a processing standpoint, coming off reads just a touch fast and missing open receivers. ISU did well to handle Tech and have a strong secondary that was extremely sticky in coverage.

-The final drive, Tech did a great job of seeing when Iowa State was in coverages/pre-snap looks that would help get Brooks the ball. Tahj was playing very well in the second half because Tech was giving him the ball vs. Man looks with two-high safeties. Favorable boxes that allowed Brooks to set up shots that eventually won you the game.

-Heck of a run on the final play. One that’ll last for a while.

-Morton really rose up at times. The throw to Kelly in the corner of the endzone stands out to me. Great ball, and a really good route from Kelly. I think it’s also fair to be frustrated by the misses in the fourth quarter on the double moves to Kelly and Brown, just tough. Didn’t matter in the end, but tough at the time. Also understand that the weather is a factor.

-I feel that Tech did not help themselves many times last night. Penalties, situational football and clock management were all factors in this one. Iowa State made more mistakes than Tech, but it was concerning to me just a bit. Worked out in the end.

-Defensively, Tech did a great job of stopping the run. It looked more like the TCU defense last week, moving the front pre-snap and filling gaps really well. Really happy with Jacob Rodriguez in that aspect.

-Harvey Dyson continues to improve, it was really, really impressive to see him impact the game over the last two weeks. Hope that continues. Similar note, was surprising to me how much Tech was able to effect the game on the D-Line. ISU’s line had a worse game than I was anticipating and it all helped equal a win.

Here’s the charting, feels good to wake up 1-0 this week with another massive and daunting challenge awaiting.

Way OT: SuperBOX

Anybody have one of these? Was visiting friends in Dallas this weekend and the Mavs came up. I mentioned that I couldn't see any of their games without spending a ton, so I really hadn't been keeping up since moving to Austin. He couldn't wait to show me this thing. $250 on Amazon and basically pirates EVERYTHING. MLB, NBA, NFL...even all the euro sports stations!

Anybody have any experience? There are folks on reddit concerned about security, so that's definitely something to consider. Anyway, lemme hear from ya!

Moving to a smaller town

I have been wanting to leave Georgetown for quite awhile, the growth is out of hand. Being a top 5 growing town in the nation for a decade straight is exhausting. Obviously I want to move to Lubbock but that isn’t happening.

I’m trying to convince my wife to move to Salado, it’s only 15 minutes up the road. I know a lot of you have left the metro of Dallas to go to some of the smaller more rural towns in the area.

What are the downsides? Because I can’t find any. Schools are better, kids can play all of the sports, not crowded, still plenty to do, it’s quiet etc…

Only thing is HEB and Costco are a little farther. My wife does believe she won’t have any friends lol 🤣🤣🤣

All the Morton slander….

Did you see that final drive against Iowa State? The throw to Josh Kelly on 4th and 7.

That was a drive that we needed our QB to win us a game….and he did.

You’ve got to give credit where it is due.

Click below so you can see it for yourself. Gutsy drive, in the rain, in Ames with the crowd going nuts.

Morton deserves some credit.

What They're Saying Iowa State Edition

"Tech is not good. Think it will be the easiest game left on our schedule. Think we cover."
"EZ money, Cyclones by 2 touchdowns"
"After the UCF scare, I think the coaches and players want to make a statement. The matchup seems favorable for Iowa State. I'm normally get nervous on games, but I'm feeling confident on this one. I think ISU wins by 17. If Tech covers, it is because we let off the gas towards the end."
"We will run them over like a force of nature. Clones 41, Tech 10."
"134th ranked pass defense. out of 134 total teams. id tease this to 3 td's and still have an argument to take the good guys to cover"
"Tech gets a backdoor cover against the Iowa State backups, who get some nice reps in the 4th quarter. Cyclones win 34-21"
"I selected TT +13.5, but would not surprise me if ISU covers. Something like 66-10."
"I'm somebody that always bets against what I want, so I win no matter what.

Normally I would put a $50 moneyline bet on Tech this weekend. I've decided to only put $20 on the Tech spread because I know I'm going to lose."
"My worry is TT balls out like UCF did. They just lost 2 games they thought theyd win, vs instate rivals. They may be pissed and focused.

Or they could be hopeless. Its hard to say. Joey McG does not seem to be head coach material.

Its been said already (a lot - because its true), but get up early on them, and they will fold and mail it in.

But if i had to gamble, id bet the latter."
