The hump that we can't get over...

is right in front of us. I see a path. We're very close.

Throughout the Kliff and Wells years the hump wasn't even in sight. It was very far away. We weren't even trying to get over it.

Doesn't mean I'm happy with everything, doesn't mean I don't still have serious Qs about in-game decision making or Kittley's offense. But we're talking making some tweaks vs. needing a complete overhaul.

If you don't see that, that's on you.

SPITBALLIN' Final Whistle Feeling: Colorado

What a shame. Colorado was trying to hand you a game that they got a lead in and you couldn’t take it. You weren’t good enough upfront to even have a chance.

Major Letdown: This sucks. Tech couldn’t get it done offensively for many reasons. The Buffs gave you many opportunities to stage a comeback, but the Red Raiders couldn’t find a rhythm offensively after an electric start. Thought the defense played well enough to give you a puncher’s chance, but offensively it wasn’t good enough.

Questionable Fake Punt in 3Q: Going to point to this as where the air came out of the balloon for the Red Raiders. Don’t really get it in the moment and it wasn’t executed very well. Obviously you’re looking for a spark, but really wonder if that was the spot.

Tech OL Beat in All Facets: I don’t know how to positively spin that one. The offensive front was absolutely a mess all night long. Morton was pressured, Tech couldn’t run block and it was absolutely a train wreck. It caused turnovers, it caused the offense to be even more out of rhythm. Just have to be better at that position.

Brooks Breaks the Record: Really happy for Tahj but it is such a shame that it happened in the circumstances that it happened in. Just a dang shame.

Comments from Joey and more thoughts tomorrow/Monday from me coming.

For the rest of the season….

You’re bowl eligible but out of the conference race. Maybe it’s time to use the bye to get Hammond ready. Have j’koby/dickey going at least 50/50 with Tahj so he doesn’t get hurt and still go pro. Micah (if healthy) getting some run, plus these other young guys you brought to start getting some snaps. Joeys recruit play both tackles and left guard hell maybe every position. Young guys playing edge. We’ve brought in high rated recruiting classes with some athletic freaks I think it’s time for the last 2 game to give them snaps and see what we have for the future.

Deion is in year 2 after taking over a doormat program..,

And JM is in Year 3 after taking over a .500 program.

Deion’s team looks a lot better than they did before. They’ve improved.

We look no different than we did in Year One. Same mistakes despite better talent.

If JM doesn’t make changes in the offseason we’ll continue to look exactly like we have since he took over, mediocre.

Personally I’m sick of seeing Baylor and CU go from doormat to contender in two years while we stay mediocre year in and year out. Last week when JM looked like he was about to cry after beating ISU. I wasn’t sure whether to be excited because of the emotion or believe that he thinks beating a good team is above and beyond what Tech should be doing. I’m still not sure.

I don’t think expecting more than seven and five in this league is expecting too much. I love Joey, but we are underachieving right now and I hope he realizes it.

What I want to see

Is how we respond. Flush this.

You are going into a bye week and then to Stillwater that will be 3-7 against an absolute scrub QB in Alan Bowman.

Come out and play angry for a change. Be violent, go smash another team. Show you have guts for a change.

I’ll be in Stillwater and will come unglued if we lose this game and have some other made up BS excuse like refs, altitude, weird feeling before the game etc etc.

Show up and crush OSU.

A few thoughts at 5-2

A lot to unpack after our first 7 games. Would love to have some rational discussion, but not getting my hopes up after this weekend.

  • This weekend was awful, on every front. Our ST have been an absolute foundational piece under KPerry and they have played a huge role in winning games over the last 2 1/2 years. What we saw on Saturday, based on history, was a fluke. But, that fluke put us so far behind the 8-ball, we couldn't seem to recover. From punts to coverage to muffs, etc, ST wrecked us on field position and momentum.

Not going to get into the stuff that has been talked about ad nauseam on here: Kittley play calling, both lines, TD not adjusting on defense, JM being nothing more than a cheerleader. You guys can have at it. But there are some perspectives that we can, hopefully, discuss without getting too bent out of shape.

Since our first time HC has taken over, the entire landscape of college football has changed. There was, and is, no playbook yet for how to navigate these waters just yet. We are having to adapt on a semester basis on how to handle paying players, how to value HS players vs portal players, what does the NIL look like, what is revenue sharing look like (if/when it actually happens), etc, etc. That is all in addition to trying to run a consistent, winning program....which has not happened in 15 years.

A few talking points:
  • As much as we have been ahead of things like having a collective and trying to keep things equitable on this team, I believe that we (understandably) underestimated the cost to play this season. The market was absolutely ridiculous when it came to Oline and Dline. While waiting on the youngsters to grow into being productive players, we went into the portal to try and fill gaps and we, IMO, have come up short. We had a plan and identified a ton of very good players, only to be outbid by ridiculous amounts. I have reason to believe that we are adjusting to the market and will be in a MUCH stronger position going into this offseason. I don't see that being a hindrance moving forward.
  • Using the above point as a backdrop, I believe it gives a better perspective on some of the issues we are having. On offense, we flat out don't have the horses up front to dominate the way we want to. Kittley takes way too much crap, imo. His first 2 years he played 3 different QB each year, and not by choice. Add that to the shape the roster was left in, and I give him a pass. This year, our offense is not the issue, our OLine is, plain and simple. When the market adjusted and we missed out on getting two solid tackles and then we lost Vinny, we ended up with a sub-par line. The fact that we are averaging 38 ppg with this line should be a positive, not a negative talking point. Clay McGuire, imo, has worked miracles this season. We have some young guys coming on, but I expect Clay to have a totally different sandbox to play in come next season.
  • Rebuilding sucks.....or building, period. It takes time and patience, which, in this world, we don't really have. We have a ton of really good core of Fresh/Soph lineman on both sides of the ball, but they have to have time to develop. In the meantime, you have to hit on your portal players. I believe that as we adjust to the new rules and see an influx of dollars, we will be in much better shape.
  • Making hard decisions as a HC. For those that have been around him, you will all attest that is not an issue and will not be. If a move is deemed necessary, it will be made without hesitation, as it was at Oline last January. I realize I am the biggest homer there is, but thinking for a half a second that the HC doesn't have the balls to make moves and decisions to help Tech Football move forward is ridiculous.
  • There are a thousand different things that can be talked about, but in the end, you have to take a full, honest look at everything. Are there things that need to change and grow,? 100%. I think that is without question. But looking at this program as a whole, we are heading in the right direction. Back to back winning conference records, winning seasons and winning bowl games has never happened with a new coach.....ever. Nor has the type of recruiting that we have seen. All of those are great things. BUT, what none of us has ever seen is 1) yr to yr transfers 2) the portal 3) pay for play. The entire landscape of college football has had massive shifts in how programs are to be run....and all of that change has happened under a 1st year HC. The great thing is we have a loaded Fresh and Soph class of players and we will be active spenders in the off-season.
Fact is, regardless of how we got here, we are 5-2 and 3-1 in conference. We have shown resilience in the past and hope that we show it again.

I am sure this will go over like a wet fart, but oh well.

Convince me Im wrong…..

We are recruiting fine, sure our lines can get stronger, but we have had enough talent all year to win. Our players play hard, we quit against baylor, but im giving a one time pass….

Its not recruiting or motivation, these guys are pretty good at that, its xs and o’s. Its play calling. Joey is not the problem unless he makes himself the problem by not being willing to make changes.

Kittley has a hard time calling a game once he gets past his scripted plays. Scheme is not horrible, but we dont adjust, we dont build on things over the course of a game. We dont lean into what we are good at.

On defense we’ve been ok, not sure why we are not more aggressive bringing guys, we’ve had alot of success with that this year, then we get soft, we give alot of time and fall apart over time. Most of the time they are good enough to win but often put in short fields or bad positions because of offensive issues.

I still think joey is the guy, but damn if we arent willing, or cant recognize our weaknesses and change, that is a problem.

I watched us play a team tonight we could beat by 2 or 3 tds. We have wasted a year with a really soft schedule. It will only get tougher. Lets make tough decisions and compete. These kids should be owed an apology for the positions they’ve been put in this year by coaching.

Stick with it

We can still win 8 plus a bowl. It's a hard to pill to swallow for some, but let's see how things play out come late December/January. We were pegged at 7.5 games pre-season and can still get the over. We're moving in the right direction and some changes need to be made but take a step back and look at things as a whole. Noone is as invested in this program more than any individual that puts in the countless hours to be able to stand on the sidelines and represent Texas Tech in front of nearly 500k every Saturday. They'll do the right things.
