3 good and 3 bad while my toddler eats breakfast

Just some thoughts while eating breakfast with my toddler this morning.

Lets start off with the good

  1. Donovan Smith with under a minute left in the 2nd all the way to OT. He went 5/7 and lead tech to 2 TDs and a FG. He had one of the worst 2nd halfs of football I have seen in a long time but when the lights were on he stepped up. One thing that kind of stuck out to me is this quote from Kosi (thank you Cobern for it) – "'Right before that play started, I literally said ‘In Donny I trust.’” I knew Donny was going to take me home, and I was telling him all game, ‘Donny take me home’, so it was good to see…'" I have not heard a lot of defensive players say stuff like this about a QB. A few times that come to memory was when Foles did a playoff drive, Mahomes last year against the Bills and Brady when he had the ball during the 4th.
  2. Tim DeRuyter. We need to thank our lucky stars that we got him. Thanks to his work on improving Pattersons D, we had the perfect showing today. Allowing 13 in regulation and only one really big play was something that should be considered a win.
  3. The culture has changed. One of my biggest concerns with this team is that they were all talk, but after tonight with the performance you can tell they care. They have all bought into McGuire's vision and we see that in the details. Never giving up (on the 4th and 20 I thought we were done) to playing better fundamental football.

The bad
  1. Special teams. I don't remember the last time we had a great PR but it makes no sense why we don't fair catch it every time. FG kicking is something that I now worry about.
  2. OL. We need to figure out the solution to our OL problem but we are not great there.
  3. Not taking care of the ball. We saw 2 fumbles (recovered both) and 3 picks last night. That needs to change quickly.

Edit: It was 3 picks, I thought ESPN was weird but they were missing two drives

Offensive line question…

Ok..we all knew this area was going to be a weakness for us. For those posters that know the game, what is it that realistically can be done to offer some immediate improvement? Are we just going to have to live with it until we get bigger, better and more seasoned? Will we naturally improve as the season marches along? Can the coaches change the schemes or playing calling to protect the OL some?

Something to keep in mind this season

I know we all want to win the Big12 this year and have immediate success. There are aspects of this team that just aren't quite ready for that BUT....

Keep in mind that they way this staff is recruiting this will most likely be the worst team we field for the next decade or so.

It's going to be a helluva ride and we're just leaving the platform.

A. Dickens Appreciation Thread

In light of this news, I thought I'd create a thread to show our appreciation (or roast) for Mr. Dickens contributions over the years.

I took on a more full-time role with Rivals in January and decided at that point that I was going to step away from attending and writing about Texas Tech games every weekend.

I’m still shooting videos with Level every week, still doing back-end support for RRS, still editing the magazine and still checking the boards. Not going anywhere.

Plus, you all should be thrilled. Tech basketball started to turn it around once I stopped covering games.

Too bad the stache didn't stick around. I was thinking he was going for the Broadway Joe look.

Texas Tech leaders press UT on future non-conference schedule

Don Williams

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal | USA TODAY NETWORK

In September 2021, Texas Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said he and Texas AD Chris Del Conte had discussed the idea of the Red Raiders and the Longhorns continuing to play in all sports, especially football, for 20 to 25 years after UT leaves the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.

Not only did they discuss it, Hocutt said, but UT leadership affirmed they would work with Tech to make sure the football series played annually since 1960 would continue.

A year later, Tech officials are anxious that there’s been no movement on that front. They say they believe UT leaders have told Longhorn alumni groups that there are no plans to continue a series with Tech.
