OUR UNIFORMS ARE FUCKING EMBARRASSING

Just awful. Can barely see the shit Double T on the bass boat helmet. The Texas Tech on the uniform is for ants. The Wal-mart brand white stripe pants. The stupid bite size Double Ts on the shoulders. Just gross. Have some pride.

It really is embarrassingly bad. And it wouldn't be so maddening if we didn't have the best unis in the conference BY FAR sitting in the equipment room. Our "throwbacks" should just be what we wear. Period. We are now having "The Brand" be talked about in every other sentence. Every other real brand in College Football has either a very crisp, simple uniform scheme or do a great job of design. These unis are neither.

Juneau Alaska, Nugget Falls today

So the bosslady and I decided to get out of the oven for a few days and go somewhere where we were guaranteed cool weather.

So we're hiking towards Nugget Falls at Mendenhall Glacier today and what I thought was a fellow Red Raider came walking by wearing a Tech hat and hoody so I promptly flashed my guns up and said Wreck 'Em and the man and his wife looked at me like I was a homeless guy who asked to clean their windshield.

So I'm wondering, please tell me that wasn't one of you knuckleheads!

How to win football games

To start I think it needs to be said, we completely dominated Houston outside of turnover and the score(and those two tied together in this case).

How to win a game:
Hold opposing team under 300 passing✅
Hold opposing team under 100 rushing ✅
Pass for over 300✅
Rush for over 100✅
Winning TOP: almost tripled Houston’s TOP✅
First down: 35 to 15(Their defense is probably still winded from the TOP difference)✅

These next two were calling cards of the past decade of Tech football:
Don’t allow one star player to beat you: Nathaniel Dell- 0 pts ✅
Win the penalty battle: 6(44) vs 11(121)✅
It feels like we’ve always been the team with 11 for 121. Instantly fixed with JM.

When was the last time we could even claim 2 of those in the game against an opponent with a pulse?

Obvious room to improve and the only reason the score was close:
Turnovers: 3 turnover to their 2
Defensive points: on the giving end of this stat this week❌
Special teams: missing field goals and a near miss on a punt return TD, lots to improve. ❌❌❌

Overall here’s the big takeaway. We have a coach that actually knows how to win football games, not just produce stats. JM had a plan going into the game and it showed. I don’t think a soul on this board didn’t start having old thought of another Tech collapse and what could’ve been, but Joey and co continued to execute their plan and won the game despite Houston going ahead with 37 seconds left in the game, facing a 4th and 20, losing the turnover battle and giving the other team points.

Looking back it was pretty damn beautiful when you take all into account and don’t have to live through it live.

You can truly feel the culture shift and having a competent coaching staff. Can’t wait to see what these guys do with the remainder of this season and moving forward.

I’m upping my prediction to 9 wins(one of which being a bowl win)

Explain this to me like I am five

Nebraska fires Frost three weeks before his buyout would have dropped a lot, to hire an interim coach already on staff. is this:

(1) a goodwill gesture to let a folk hero depart with more money?

(2) a response to angry boosters who do not care about the buyout and want blood NOW;

or

(3) a sign that they actually need to start back door negotiations this early to get a guy they want?

TIA for an explanation that makes sense.

Predicting the Big XII Next 5 Weeks

Disclaimer: These are picks based on nothing but perusing box scores, past experience with the teams and small amounts of watching so far this season. I'm not an expert, just my opinions. And also mostly because I wanted to bag on TCU.

TCU: has a bye week this week (sucks to suck, Frogs) and then SMU before starting their conference schedule with OU, Kansas (at Kansas), OSU. Amazingly lucky home slate for these guys this year, but if they lose that SMU game and let it snowball into the OU game (which will not be close), I could see a scenario where these guys go 0-4 over the next 5 weeks (and possibly 0-5 in the next 6 since KSU is the next game after OSU), which would be delicious. Their fanbase talked an unbelievable amount of trash about McGuire this past week for a program who struggled to beat maybe the worst P5 team in the nation in Wk 1, and then beat up Tarleton State. As it is, I'll give them the nod over SMU & KU because they SHOULD win those on talent alone, but I'm really hoping KU destroys them. 2-2 (Ws over SMU/KU, Ls to OSU/OU)

UT: UTSA, Us (Lubbock), WVU, OU (Dallas), ISU. They're in a world of hurt if Bijan ends up missing time along with Card and Ewers. I know that we've had that UT monkey on their back for decades, but I cannot envision a way they could beat us missing those 3, would take a Herculean effort out of Wright on his first collegiate road start. Tempted to give them an 0-fer through those 5 weeks (assuming Card misses), but until WVU proves they can actually win a game, I'll give UT the benefit of the doubt even missing QB1 & QB2. 1-4 (W over WVU, Ls to UTSA/TTU/OU/ISU).

Baylor: Texas State, Iowa State (Ames), OSU, bye week, WVU (Morgantown). ISU hasn't been very impressive (arguably downright bad against Iowa) but I do think OSU has shown enough firepower to win a shootout in Waco. I hate it, but they've got a really good shot at repeating, especially if I'm wrong and they knock off OSU. 3-1. (Ws over TS/ISU/WVU, L to OSU).

OSU: Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Bye Week, Baylor (Waco), TTU, TCU (Ft Worth). I have no idea what to make of these guys. Their defense is suspect, but the offense has been better than I expected it to be. I still don't trust Sanders at all, but he's protected the ball fairly well thus far and if he continues not losing them games, they're going to be good. I'm going to give them the nod over Baylor in Waco, even though I don't know if I believe it myself, and I think they probably get us this year for the last time for awhile, even though I think it'll be a tight game. 4-0.

OU: Nebraska (Lincoln), KSU, TCU (Ft. Worth), UT (Dallas), KU. KSU has their number and they always drop a game to someone they shouldn't, but they have a ton of talent on that roster and Lebby is a great play caller. Also, I hate them. 5-0.

KSU: Tulane, OU (Norman), TTU, ISU (Ames), Bye week. Call me crazy (or a homer), but I think we get them this year, and I'd be even more convinced of it if they actually did beat OU the week before, nothing Adrian Martinez has put on film in his 20 years of college football scares me and our defense is damned good. Also think ISU gets them in Ames. 1-3 (W over Tulane, Ls to OU/TTU/ISU)

KU: UH (Houston), Duke, ISU, TCU, OU. This team is not the Kansas of the past and, assuming Daniels stays healthy, they're going to be a thorn in everyone's side plus probably surprise a few teams that they shouldn't (hopefully TCU and UT), Leipold is the real deal. That being said, their o-line is not great and UH is going to be angry so I don't expect this week to go their way. 1-4. (W over Duke, Ls to UH/ISU/TCU/OU)

ISU: Ohio, Baylor, KU (Lawrence), KSU, UT (Austin). I think Matt Campbell should have left 2 years ago, this doesn't feel like a better ISU team than last year, even though Hutchinson is a certified stud. 3-2. (Ws over Ohio/KU/KSU, Ls to BU/UT).

TTU: NCSt (Raleigh), UT, KSU (Manhattan), OSU (Stillwater), Bye Week. I would not be shocked to come out of this 4-0 and I would not be shocked to come out of it 1-3. Crazy to say, but I just don't know what to expect from our offensive line and whether or not we can actually cover up their weaknesses. I do think we're competitive in every game because our defense is legitimately good, and I think we end up within 1 score of NCSt. Given what UT is facing injury-wise, it would be a monstrous loss to not take them at home IMO. I'm splitting the difference. 2-2. (Ws over UT/KSU, Ls to NCSt/OSU).

WVU: Towson, VT (Blacksburg), UT (Austin), Bye week, Baylor. Ls to everyone. No seriously, they've somehow got a good shot at winning that VaTech game because VaTech is also terrible and they're probably going to get a super depleted UT team. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt against VaTech, but even as depleted as UT will be, I don't think they get that game in Austin. 2-2 (Ws over Towson/VT, Ls to UT/BU).

OGRaiderRed’s Big 12 Power Rankings Week 2

Still too early to figure out anything definitive about this conference other than West Virginia is flat awful. Looking forward to conference play in the coming weeks to have a better idea.
  1. Oklahoma (2-0 0-0, Last Weeks Ranking 2)- Beating Kent State doesn’t really move any needles but the team still looks like the well oil machine that it was when Lincoln Riley left. Dillion Gabriel to Marvin Mims may be the best QB/WR connection in the conference and their defense is very stingy just as Venebles wants. Boring schedule thus far for the Sooners gets a little more interesting as they take on a historic rival in Nebraska who is reeling from another awful season.
  2. Kansas State (2-0 0-0, LW 4)- A renewed rivalry game against Mizzou was a one sided affair. Deuce Vaughn was an absolute stud as always posting his 8th straight 100+ yard game and had 2 TDs. Outside of that the offense left a lot to be desired with QB Martinez completing 9/20 for 101 yard. A run stopping DL will force the Wildcats to have a more dynamic offense if they want to score. At one point KSU had 4 straight interceptions. KSU may not be the third best team in the league but I’m not ready to bet against them yet. Tulane comes to Manhattan next week.
  3. Oklahoma State (2-0 0-0, LW 3)- Uninspiring performance against a not great Arizona State has them switching spots with Kstate. Big 12 preseason favorite Spencer Sanders had a blasé day, completing 21/38 for 2 TDs and an INT (1 rush TD). He certainly doesn’t look like the best QB in the Big 12 but his ability to burn you on his legs will need to be respected by DCs. Not much else to write home about for the Cowboys other than a win against another Power 5 conference is never a bad thing. Up next is a cupcake game vs Arkansas Pine Bluff.
  4. Iowa State(2-0 0-0, LW 5)- Ah conquered their demons at last. It hasn’t happened since 2014 but the clones got the best of their bitter rival Iowa in Iowa City. Just like last week, the Xavier Hutchins/Dekkers connection won them the game and will test Big 12 defenses. The Clones defense is still TBD as they have yet to play a capable offense. Special Teams mistakes almost cost them for what feels like the hundredth time after getting 2 punts blocked but their defense(Iowas garbage offense?) held firm and sealed the win against the B10 foe and added a quality win for them and the Big 12. Next week will be a home game versus Ohio.
  5. Texas Tech (2-0 0-0 LW 7)- Joey Mcguire and his team pulled a rabbit out of their hat at the end of this one. After a backbreaking Interception setup the (25) Houston Cougars with under a minute left, Donovan Smith and the offense matched downfield fast and setup a Wolff field goal to send it to OT. Hologorson’s bet that offense first in OT didn’t pay off after Smith converted a 4th and 20 and marched in the game winning TD after. This was cleansing for the Red Raider faithful who are used to losing close games this way. Injuries loom large as Weston Wright was carted off and the QB situation is shaky at best. Also, what was up with that chump on the Houston sideline? They travel to NC State this week for the Red Raiders first Power 5 opponent.
  6. Baylor (1-1 0-0, LW 1)- I am still very high on Baylor but you cannot lose to the #21 team (BYU in Provo) and keep the top spot while everyone above you handles business against decent competition. Baylors offense did not look good at all with QB Shapen taking a big step back from last weeks performance and the run game was a non factor. They end their non conference slate with Texas State coming to Waco.
  7. Texas (1-1 0-0, LW 6) - Texas is likely a top half big 12 team if their performance against Alabama was any indication on how they will be this season. The game was incredible to watch and the end result devastating to UT fans who had the lead with 1:29 left. Their defense was absolutely nasty against Heisman winner Bryce Young and the (formerly) heralded Bama offense. UTs offense was streaky and backup Hudson Card was not the deep threat that Quinn Ewers appeared to be before his injury. Quinn Ewers health may very well determine how far this team goes. Texas travels to a hungry UTSA this week who may have the Longhorns next coach.
  8. TCU (2-0 0-0, LW 8)- TCU easily handled Tarleton but who really cares. Still impossible to tell if this Horned Frogs team is good yet. We learned Chandler Morris had a mild MCL injury and was out this week so Max Duggan took over and handled business. Seems that the QB competition has yet to be determined by Dykes has yet to make a decision on the matter. Not much else to say about TCU yet other than their first real test comes against a spurned SMU Mustangs who will want a taste of revenge against Sonny Dykes.
  9. Kansas (2-0 1-0, LW 10)- Kansas’ offense was very well rounded and knocked the mountaineer defense around all night, accounting for 6 TDs. Their secondary left a lot to be desired and will likely be carved up by other Big 12 offense like they were with WVU but did seal the win with a pick 6. What is Leipold building in Lawrence? Up next they play at Houston.
  10. West Virginia(0-2 0-1, LW 9)- On Bob Huggins day in West Virginia and up 14 in the first half, Neal Brown did it again with terrible coaching and this may have been his last time doing so at the helm of WVU. WVU’s defense was destroyed by lowly Kansas in Morgantown. JT Daniels and Ford-Wheaton had a huge day in the air, credit to Graham Harrell, but this was the only bright spot for the Mountaineers, which will be overlooked by the Pick 6 in overtime to seal the game. Many boos roared from the crowd all game and you can hardly blame them. WVU has no choice but to cut bait with Neal, our likely first coaching casualty in the conference this season. WVU plays Towson next week in a “get right” game.

Team of the Week: Kansas Jayhawks for their first 2-0 start since 2011 and program changing momentum under Lance Leipold.

Player of the Week: Kansas QB Jalon Daniels (18/29 for 219 yds and 3 TDs with 0 INTS, rushed for 85 more)

STORY: Five things that I liked & disliked against Houston

Now that I've had time to sleep on it and some discussion with some buddies, I wanted to share some of my thoughts on yesterday's game against Houston.

Disliked:

1. The Offensive Line

The offensive line, but especially Caleb Rogers have a lot to learn from this matchup. Both tackles were getting ran out of the building on Saturday by Houston's strong edge rushers and it hurt Donovan Smith's pocket presence and with multiple penalties, the offensive line stagnated some drives for the Red Raiders. Something will have to improve against NC State on the road this week, five sacks allowed for 39 yards just can't happen. The loss of Weston Wright is also massive and we should find out more tomorrow.

2. Donovan Smith's arm talent

Smith struggled to throw the deep ball against the Cougars and it really hurt the Red Raiders. A somewhat underthrown drop from Jerand Bradley and a way underthrown ball to Mason Tharp for an interception really hurt the Red Raiders. However, I think Smith has a better arm than he showed on Saturday and most of the struggles were due to the offensive line's struggles. I feel like Kittley doesn't trust Smith as much as he did Shough, which may limit the offense.

3. Donovan Smith checking into a QB draw on 3rd & Long multiple times

I like the fact that the players have the freedom to check in and out of a play that they don't like, but Smith needs to make a better call than a QB draw that goes nowhere if there isn't a look that he likes.

4. Behren Morton playing his only snap at TE

I really hate everything about this play, the timing, the circumstance and the risk that it places on Morton. On a key 4th & 6 in the fourth quarter, Behren Morton lined up at wide receiver and motioned to tight end to LEAD BLOCK on a designed QB run for Smith. I think this was reckless, you have two healthy scholarship quarterbacks and I don't think playing the second one in run block is a good idea.

5. Special Teams & Kicking

Damn near everything went wrong with the team's units yesterday, two missed field goals and maybe the worst day on punt return in a while. Adrian Frye wasn't catching punts and the Red Raiders lost a ton of yards in consequence. Houston's Nathaniel Dell also made the Red Raiders' punt team look silly, taking one to the house that was called back and another return for 50 yards that gave the Cougars the football in the red zone.

HM. 2nd & 21 Nathaniel Dell 19 yard reception in OT

This might've been the worst defensive play of the game to me. After a holding call gave the Red Raiders a second & long, Dell motioned into the slot and the Texas Tech linebacking core lost the All-American in coverage and he cut it to 3rd & 2. Overall this didn't matter, but a maddening mistake that just can't happen.

Liked:

1. The defense as a whole, but especially the secondary

Boy, the defense kept the Red Raiders in this one. Two turnovers, completely contained Clayton Tune on the ground, and held Dell scoreless with 120 yards receiving. When Reggie Pearson intercepted that pass from Tune in the second quarter, I thought the Red Raiders won the game.

2. Kosi Eldridge making a crazy impact

I touched on this last night, but Eldridge was excellent all night long especially after the apparent injury and made a great play in the backfield for a 15 yard loss. Eldridge said that he was fine post game despite the early exit near the half.

3. Jerand Bradley's resiliency

Bradley had the drop in the endzone that would've sealed the game for the Red Raiders in the 4th quarter but on 4th & 20 in the first overtime, he came through with the game saving 21 yard reception to redeem himself of the nightmarish drop earlier in the game.

4. Tahj Brooks & Sarodorick Thompson

The running backs struggled to get a rhythm going behind a struggling o-line, but overall the backfield showed out. Thompson had an opportunity to run on a play where he made five guys miss at the line but was brought down at the ankles before he could get into the green grass. Tahj got into the box score on the game tying score in the first overtime after Bradley's excellent play.

5. Jacoby Jackson

Jackson has been praised all camp and season long by Joey McGuire and it appears he will have his chance to take over for Weston Wright in the short term. Jackson played very well yesterday and was crucial in making the hole on Donovan Smith's game ending rushing touchdown.
