STORY: "We've got playmakers everywhere" - Behren Morton

Here are the player takeaways following the Red Raiders' resounding 48-10 win over West Virginia this evening - featuring Behren Morton, Xavier White, Dadrion Taylor, and Marquis Waters.

- Morton started off by explaining that he ate something bad last night and "wasn't feeling good" as he slept yesterday or this morning. He threw up before the game.
"I knew I had to get it out of my system...just kind of getting that done and and then get ready for the game."

- Morton was thankful for how well the TEs and WRs opened up the field for him and made his job easier.
"The whole night we were we were executing well...they made the ball go and so you know, I just tried to do my job and get the ball to you know, Mason and Baylor and Teeter and X and all those guys to let them do something with the ball."

- Morton credits his relentless preparation for his success on the field this season.

- Xavier White spoke about the talent of the WR group...
"It's a dangerous room and we have a lot of depth."

- Morton likes to move the ball fast and enjoyed executing that aspect today on the field. He believes that going fast contributed to the Red Raiders' success.

- Myles Price has been a leader on the sideline through his injury and has helped Xavier whenever he can.
"He's been high energy."

- Morton continued on the talent that the WR room and the offense has...
"We've got playmakers everywhere...the TE room, running backs, receivers, everywhere. My number is called, and it's next person up and I have no doubt in my mind that that person is going to step up and make a big play."

- Morton says that his ankle is close to 100% and he feels good.

- Dadrion Taylor and Marquis Waters were up next and immediately credited the defensive line for their success tonight.

- Waters explained that the defensive line and the secondary feed off each other during the game and try to make each others job easier. It was also a fun game for the defense because they finally lived up to their "take three" mantra.

- Taylor..."You know that I always say that we have to get to three but that's not stopping us. We can get four or five."

- Waters shared similar sentiment to Morton's credit to practice and repetition as a key to Tech's success today.
"We just had to translate it today and I felt good about it. Hats off to the d-line..."

Speaking more on the d-line..."They did a great job of keeping everything bottled up for us. They set the tone. You see the d-lineman in the game making big plays and we want to help them out as well."

- Waters explains that the defensive secondary makes "bets" on who will get a pass deflection or a takeaway on the sidelines during the games, with the loser having to do pushups.
Looking over to Waters, Rabbit says, "speaking of pushups, he owes me 20."

RRS TV: Second Half & Overtime Rewatch - Texas Edition (pres. by Schooley Mitchell)

First Half:

There were 10 possessions in this half. 70% of them were bad to really bad for Tech. Most teams would've been mathematically eliminated after this half because Texas was rolling offensively. But the two sustained drives lead to TDs and kept the defense off the field until they could regroup in the locker room (spoiler alert: they regroup). I was pretty despondent at halftime. Just not in a good place for my mentals or my chickens.

But there were signs of things in this half that would end up winning the game for us -- primarily, our DL winning battles at the line of scrimmage. Sark gave them credit today when a reporter tried to say WVU had a better run defense than Tech.

Our OL was still having problems, but UT's front -- especially the interior guys -- are really tough to block. Ask Alabama...

Second Half & OT:

That's one of the best halves of football we've played in a long time, definitely the most enjoyable to watch. It almost seemed necessary to include every play of Tech's 17-0 scoring run in this recap.

TCU and the playoffs

After beating KState, they have a real shot at being undefeated. Obviously not what I am hoping for, and we could absolutely play the spoiler, but crazy to think Sonny has a shot at that in his first year there.

Having said that, I think Tech has a chance to go 9-3. If we win out, do we sneak into the conference championship game with 2 conference losses?

STORY: My thoughts: Morton shows why he's the future pres. by Homefield Apparel

- First off, the series is now tied at 6-6 all-time against WVU.

- I think this is the first game where there wasn't a back-and-forth "Raider Power" chant between the east and west sides. The blowout led to folks leaving especially students. But this one wasn't the obvious sell-out crowd like the one that will be here next weekend.

- The future of this Red Raider offense shined so bright today. You start with QB Behren Morton. He was in control of the fast-tempo all game and ran it flawlessly. RB Tahj Brooks led in rushing. Xavier White was as good as he has been without Myles Price active. Mason Tharp is a massive tight end that can develop with Morton as the years go by and Jerand Bradley, although it wasn't a stat shining game for him, is also another Morton connection that could develop well. Mix in the likes of Brady Boyd, Nehemiah Martinez and Loic Fouonji - sign me the eff up.

- The defense flat out manhandled the Mountaineer offense. JT Daniels isn't good and Neal Brown is not the answer for them. Shoutout to their fans on the trip back home.

- Another good note is I, and correct me if I'm wrong, didn't see one Red Raider get injured and stay down on the turf. Meanwhile, West Virginia could've been using the sneaky cramp move in the beginning when Tech was just moving on offense rather quickly.

- No Cam'Ron Valdez as expected. We'll ask about that in postgame.

- You're two wins away from bowl eligibility. Kansas, Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma really should be close or even secured wins for the Red Raiders looking at how each have competed against one another. TCU is the toughest opponent left on the schedule. I'll be there for that one.

- If it's not broke - don't fix it. I'm all on board the Morton train. I don't see how you go back to a starter, Tyler Shough, who hasn't played since the beginning of the year for the future of the program after a damn good debut despite a loss to Oklahoma State followed by a whooping of West Virginia that was never close. Keep him in and let him work his magic.

Arc of improvement - Does Tech win out?

I dont want to base too much on a win vs a bad WV team that was playing on the road, but...

I have been expecting to see improvement from both the team and the staff as the year goes on. Typically you see the biggest jump in the 2nd and 3rd weeks once your team gets back to real competition form.

This year, we had the following:
1) All new coaching staff. 1st time NCAA head coach with a staff that had never coached a game together.
2) A team that had players working with all new systems on both sides of the ball. While most of them had the Spring to learn the system, that's not enough to be really good in a new system. The normal learning curve would naturally be a little flatter.
3) Mix and match OL learning to play together, and having to do so with 3 different QBs so far, and a coordinator that may have been adjusting his calls to the guy taking the snaps.
4) OC has 3 different QBs starting in the first 6 games, and all of the above-mentioned learning curves to deal with.

My feeling right now is that we have faced a very tough front half of the season with all of those challenges to overcome, and that our learning curve may have just steepened as we move into the "easier" part of our schedule. If that is true, and we are getting players back in the next couple of weeks, the chances of a 9-3 season are very real. What do you think?

TLDR: Are we getting better at just the right time?

STORY: Things I Liked & Disliked Against West Virginia

Man, yesterday felt so damn good. Steamrolling a non-Kansas conference opponent was so refreshing to watch.

After the win, Tech’s in a great spot with five to play this season and there was plenty to like about yesterday’s win.

Liked:

Behren & the tempo offense:

If Behren Morton isn’t the starting quarterback moving forward, I have questions for this coaching staff.

Morton looked excellent once again, showing excellent zip on the football but the biggest thing that stood out to me was his ability to maneuver the pocket and scramble or throw the ball away.

He really helped the offensive line yesterday with that ability but the offense’s tempo with Behren is excellent and it killed the West Virginia defense that couldn’t substitute.

Behren has me pumped for the future and the present, fun times ahead.

Xavier White’s touchdown and another big day:

Man, this touchdown was nuts. Behren tossed an excellent ball, what I think was his best of the day, and Xavier had to work to get to the house.

Xavier had another excellent game with over 100 yards receiving with 82 yards of YAC and has certainly solidified his name into the rotation when Myles Price returns, likely next week.

The Take Four Defense:

They finally did it, the defense created turnovers. In my “bold predictions” from last week, I said Tech would finish with a positive turnover differential in the final six games of the schedule and they’re off to a great start after yesterday.

There was a ton of good from the defense and not much to be worried about. Rayshad and Malik were excellent in the secondary once again and Tech did a great job making JT Daniels look, to put it bluntly, awful. (CC. @4O9to8O6&Back)

Muddy’s Breakout:

Marquis Waters had an excellent game, he was all over the field and was tied for the lead in tackles with seven.

Three of those tackles went for loss in what was his best game of the season to this point. If he can get going, this defense can get even better, which is extremely exciting.

Matt Keeler and the O-Line:

I thought Keeler answered the bell pretty well for the injured Monroe Mills. I was somewhat surprised by the lack of Ty Buchanan, but Keeler did well.

The offensive line played well, despite a few miscues that have become somewhat of a regularity. Whether that’s attributed to the tempo that Behren brings, Behren’s pocket presence, or an improvement from the group itself, any better this group can get means good things for the Red Raiders.

Disliked:

McGuire’s clock management at the end of the 1st half:

Coach spoke about this post game, blaming himself, but the possession that ended with 1:32 in the second quarter was a massive mismanage.

An incompletion on 3rd & 15 gave JT Daniels and the Mountaineers the ball with plenty of time to score. With a rush, you are able to drain the clock before the punt, but in the end it was a non-factor.

Caleb Rogers getting hit in the face by the ball on a screen:

I got a chuckle out of this play, don’t really remember when it happened but it was a screen intended for Brooks and it hit Rogers in the face.

Good thing this was a blowout because it would’ve been quite a mess if it truly mattered.

Way OT: Anyone graduate with Speech/Hearing Pathology B.S. from Tech HSC?

My daughter wants to major in this and we found out this weekend, the program is actually through the TTUHSC. So you come into TTU, do your two years of pre-reqs, then you transfer over to the HSC. Because she will be coming in with so many hours, she will only need 1 year to complete her pre-reqs, which is rightfully making her a bit nervous that she will only get the true Tech experience for 1 year.

So I am trying to find current/past students that could answer questions. I e-mailed the program lead as well, but figure I'd check here.

Mid-season MVP

Has got to be the #54 overall pick in the Adopt A Red Raider draft. He was number 1 on my draft board and no one was more surprised then me when he fell all the way to #54. Let's GOOOOOO!

Continuing on a serious note, McGuire has to be the fav for Big 12 coach of the year, right?

BU-TT

I get the Baylor hate and I might get crap for saying this but I don’t hate them nearly as much as I did under the Briles regime. They were dirty in multiple ways under him as HC. Now they are a much more respectable program in my opinion.

also from my perspective, TCU is headed down the path of vile and dirty. I am starting to hate them as much as anyone.
