RECRUITING: CJ Baskerville official visit reaction...

The San Diego State safety was one of the rare transfers to commit to his new school before taking his visit. I spoke with Baskerville in full last week and you can read that article here.

Baskerville took his official visit over the weekend and I was able to exchange some messages with the future Red Raider.

Overall thoughts and highlights from the visit: "The relationship with coach McGuire and the rest of the coaches is phenomenal. The plan coach has going forward for this program is very promising. The facilities impressed me off the bat and how much they care for their athletes as well. After this weekend I’m 100% confident in my decision and I fully believe Tech is a perfect fit for me."

Connecting with the rest of the team: "Tyler Owens was my host and he did a good job of bringing me around the players and being treated like family. I was able to talk to Rabbit (Dadrion Taylor-Demerson) a lot as well and we are all very happy to be sharing the field with each this year."

OT: Christmas Dinner

What are you guys having this year? Same thing every year or change it up?

We are hosting this year. Only 6 people, with my three + my parents and older brother. My little brother is skipping for the 3rd year in a row which is its own mess. We hosted in 2019 and did fajitas. This year my wife found a rib roast for under $10/pound, so we are going to give prime rib a shot. Haven't set up sides yet.

HOOPS: Some thoughts on the blowout, bounce back win over Jackson State

Well, that was refreshing after a hell of a week surrounding the program and school as a whole. The Red Raiders looked like they should against extremely inferior competition, without Daniel Batcho.

KJ Allen looked really good, as did quite a few guys, and whether it’s a trend for Allen against bad competition or if he’ll be the real deal come conference play is yet to be seen. He’s been great over the past two games, and I wonder if he’s done enough to crack the 15–20-minute threshold against quality competition.

Kevin Obanor has sneakily led this team throughout the season and did it again before D’Maurian Williams scored 17 in the second half. Obanor’s 15.3 per game this season has seemed to go under-the-radar and he’s been steady after his somewhat slow start in November.

Pop Isaacs had his worst game of the season with an 0-5 showing from deep and 2-8 from the field. It didn’t matter and if he’s going to have an off game, it’s a good thing that it is this one.

Lamar Washington got extensive run again. Seems like he’ll be apart of the rotation come NYE in Ft. Worth. He was efficient from the field but had a couple of moments on defense.

I was happy to see Elijah Fisher and Kerwin Walton get some playing time. Fisher going 2-6 from FT wasn’t great but he was better otherwise. Walton didn’t do a whole lot, but it was good to see him out there after only a few minutes in the past few and an absence against Eastern Washington. If either of these guys can develop, especially Fisher, it would be great for the length and quality of this team’s depth.

It was refreshing to see this team take care of business and quiet the noise a bit and we will see if they can do it again on Wednesday afternoon at home against Houston Christian.

RECRUITING: Catching up with Austin Peay transfer WR Drae McCray

One of Tech's top WR targets in the portal took his official visit over the weekend. In 2021 McCray was coached by Kirk Bryant and Josh Cochran at Austin Peay, so while he isn't from Texas there are existing relationships there and a reason for Tech to feel good about things. Was able to exchange some messages with McCray whenever he got home.

Overall thoughts on the visit: "The visit went really well. I enjoyed being around the staff & players. Coach Jones is a really great guy. "

Catching up with Kirk Bryant and Josh Cochran: "It was great catching up with them! We had some good laughs when talking about some of our memories."

Meeting Joey McGuire: "I enjoyed spending time with Coach McGuire & seeing how he cares for his players and learning what kind of man he is."

Where Texas Tech fits in his recruitment following this visit: "Texas Tech fits really well in my recruitment and is definitely a school I’m considering when I make that decision to commit."

Other schools in the mix: "I’ve narrowed the list down quite a bit and took some other visits to other places as well."

Decision timeline: "I don't have a set date yet. Sooner rather than later for sure. Working on figuring some things out and finding the absolute best fit and situation for myself."

@johngreenslade

I’ve been saying for years…

That it will never matter how many skill players we win, we will never compete until we recruit the lines.

Well, we are doing that now. If we can do this AND keep that PJM going, we will win. Football is fun again and I see it getting much better from here.
