**Reminder that FCS games and garbage-time possessions are not included in these numbers***
Offensive Points Per Drive:
Texas Tech - 2.18 points per offensive possession. 70th in the country. At this point in the season, it's fair to call our offense what it is -- a below-average P5 unit, at best.
(conf only) - 2.47 points per drive. 7th in the conference.
TCU - 3.47 points per offensive possession. 9th in the country.
(conf only) - 3.44 points per drive. Best in the conference.
Back to back weeks, Tech's defense will be facing one of the best offenses in the country.
Offensive TD Percentage:
Texas Tech - 26.4% of possessions end with a TD play. 75th in the country.
(conf only) - 29.5% of conference possessions result in TDs. 7th in the conference.
TCU - 45.7% of possessions end with a TD play. 8th in the country. If they wouldn't have piddled around v. Colorado for a half with Chandler Morris at QB... they are top 3 in the country in this category.
(conf only) - 44.3% of drives have been TDs. Best in the conference.
Offensive Turnover Percentage:
Texas Tech - 17.6% of possessions end with a turnover. 125th in the country.
(conf only) - 16.4% of possessions end with a turnover. Last in the conference.
TCU - 3.7% of possessions end with a turnover. 3rd in the country.
(conf only) - 4.9% of conf possessions are turned over. Best in the conference.
Offensive Yards Per Play:
Texas Tech - 5.12 yards per play. 98th in the country.
TCU - 7.59 yards per play. 3rd in the country.
If you took the names off the numbers, I'm taking every offense in the Big 12 except Iowa State over Tech's. That's not good. This offense is still tracking towards being one of the least productive we've seen around here in a long time. The 2020 David Yost Debacle will be tough to beat, but it's certainly possible.
That said, of our remaining 4 games, Tech will face 3 of the weaker defenses in the Big 12. They can still salvage this thing. But guys are going to have to start playing a lot better. The OL gets a lot of the blame, but it's everyone that has to play better, with the possible exception of the RB room (those guys run hard and break tackles -- they just may not have crazy high-end speed).
The numbers for TCU's offense are staggering to say the least. They are averaging more yards per play, scoring TDs more frequently, and turning it over less than Tech's 2016 offense. And they will be playing at home against a Tech defense that absorbed some body blows last Saturday. We shall see, though. Baylor's offense was a different animal and did some things that TCU won't be able to really replicate. TCU does do a lot of things well, though... obviously. And it's probably the toughest test for our defense to date when you consider the situation (our offense is struggling) and the venue.
Defensive Points Per Drive:
Texas Tech - 2.31 points allowed per possession. 70th in the country.
(conf only) - 2.46 points allowed per drive. 7th in the conference.
TCU - 2.31 points allowed per possession. 70th in the country.
(conf only) - 2.45 points allowed per drive. 5th in the conference.
Defensive TD Percentage:
Texas Tech - 24.7% of possessions end with opponents running a TD play. 46th in the country.
(conf only) - 30.5% of conf. opponents' possessions are TDs. 6th in the league.
TCU - 28.4% of possessions end with opponents running a TD play. 71st in the country.
(conf only) - 30% of drives end with opponent TD. 5th in the conference.
Defensive Turnover Percentage:
Texas Tech - 12.9% of opponents' possessions end with a turnover. 51st in the country.
(conf. only) - 11.9% -- 4th in the conference.
TCU - 11.1% of opponents' possessions end with a turnover. 68th in the country.
(conf. only) - 15% -- 2nd in the conference (behind Baylor... you're welcome, Baylor)
Defensive Yards Per Play:
Texas Tech - 5.4 yards allowed per play. 40th in the country.
TCU- 5.70 yards allowed per play. 62nd in the country.
We
should be able to have some success this Saturday offensively. A lot of teams have. If OU didn't lose Gabriel early in their game against TCU, their numbers would look even worse. As bad as our defense has played in spurts against KSU, Baylor, UT and OSU, TCU's defense has not been any better.
It's going to take a lot of points to win Saturday. I'm going to guess in the high 30s, a mark that seems insurmountable after watching last week's game. But don't be surprised if the things we did against WVU and Ok. State work in a similar fashion against TCU. Their defense is "gettable." They also still haven't seen our vaunted "3-QB Package."
