Why in the world would anyone substitute your starting QB for a D2 sophomore walk on for a 3rd and 1 in the red zone with 2:45 left in a tie game?

Would you feel better if we closed it out in regulation with a 49-42 win?

I certainly would still not feel good about it. But if we had managed the play clock better and scored a TD at the end of regulation and left ACU much less time to force OT we would feel better about the outcome. We would have won and the game would have been much less in doubt. As it stands we were all petrified we were going to lose to an FCS team.

I went back and reviewed the last 5 minutes of regulation. Why in the world would anyone substitute your starting QB for a D2 sophomore walk on for a 3rd and 1 in the red zone with 2:45 left in a tie game.

I now see there is a dedicated thread to the final drive. Carry on.

The last 4 minutes of the game went down like this:

On a 2nd and 1 with 3;49 left we run Taj for 8 and get a first down and burn some clock.

The next play we snap the ball from the 17 with 3:22 left. There were :13 seconds left on the play clock!!!!

Pass to Conyers for 9.

On 2nd and 1 we snap the ball at the 2:48 mark with :16 seconds on the play clock. And what do we do? We throw an incomplete pass to stop the clock at 2:45.

We should of given it to our stud RB and run some clock. But what did we do in crunch time when we need a yard to get a first down? We sub in a D2 sophomore walk on at QB. And what happens? The center gets flagged for a false start. How in the world does a center false start?????

Now a 3rd and 6 produces another incomplete pass that stops the clock. BRILLIANT!!

We end up kicking a FG and leaving them 2:39 on the clock. That is an eternity.

If we run Taj on the 2nd and 1 and snap the ball at the 2:20 mark(proper play clock management) and get the first down/touchdown. Worst case, you get stuffed and kick the FG at the 1:45 mark and leave them with almost 1 minute less on the clock. ACU did not get in FG range to tie it until :24 seconds left.

Total mismanagement from the 3:22 mark on.

Complaining about Kittley after this debacle…

…is like a Titanic survivor complaining about the food service. You may well have a point, but with so many other bigger issues, it would take to Wednesday to get to Kittley.

For a respectable program, 45 points —32 in the first half — would seem to be a nice performance considering what other offenses were doing against FCS foes and it being the first game. Win like 45-13 and go on.

What 60.000 witnessed was a horrid defense, athletes that looked no better then ACU, a culture of a team that was not ready to play and serious big-picture questions in year 3 of this regime.

This falls on one man, the head coach, in which a fan base continues to give him pass after pass because they want this to work so bad.

Reserve the public floggings for Tech’s favorite whipping boy for later. There are plenty of issues before getting to him.

Damn Joey

All this fan base wants is to see Hudson, someone you hyped up and said from week 1 would be massively involved in the offense. He is the biggest recruit in our history and you are from what I can tell intentionally keeping that from happening.

Of all the coaching blunders and bullshit you spill, this might be the maddest I’ve been with you.

Who's Driving This Clown Car?

I'm not out on McGuire, but if he is truly a head coach he kicks some but on the staff and implements some accountability. I think I saw him late in the game walk down to Kittley and say something pointed. How do you score with an offense that goes sideline to sideline? Defense is waiting to see what the offense is doing instead of attacking and forcing the offense to make bad decisions. What's so special about our special teams?

Who are the leaders on the team.? I don't see them. Maybe in the transfer era, no one is there to do anything but get to the next gig or pocket some NIL money.

What about our brand? I am an old marketing guy and I know what branding is all about. What I see on the field in no way reflects the brand Joey describes. Actually, anybody tells you to "be the brand" they are trying to bullshit somebody. Our brand right now is "Get in the Clown Car".

Offensive Identity….

It took 4 games and a 1-3 record last year to realize we need to focus on running the ball and even then it seemed it was only done just because of Morton’s shoulder issues. If Tahj is back this week That needs to be the focus with Dickey and others. It just seems the offensive staff wants to play with shiny things over creating an Identity that helps win ball games. If the shiny things are truly special just getting them the ball three or four times the game will result in big plays please not force feeding them 10+ throws

Coaching disadvantage

After getting exposed by ACU & Wash St. Both with rosters at least on paper less talented than TT.

Is there a coaching strength anywhere on the staff or are we always at a disadvantage?

We all know the offensive is hot garbage. How can we not adapt vs what seems like throwing darts at a playbook? I’d rather run the ball 50 times a game and line up in the I - formation with play action than what’s currently taking place. At least we can make our guys have to get physical and wear other teams down that don’t have depth- which is everyone we play outside of a couple of teams.

While the defense has been bad in itself, we don’t ever do them any favors. DeRuyter is the only coach that gets the benefit of doubt.

There doesn’t seem to be any actual coaching strategy. It doesn’t make sense how it can be so bad in yr 3 with no signs of improvement.

In recruiting, where is all this athletisism we keep hearing about? This train is off the tracks. I want it to work for McGuire. But good god, it’s been awful on the actually coaching end.

All around pathetic performance

Unbelievable how bad the offense looked last night. Morton especially. I stopped counting how many airballs he threw last night but most of them the receiver was in a spot to make the catch. Team as whole lacked fire and looked lost. There is zero reason that a team with the offensive tools that we have to lay a turd on the field like they did last night.

Seriously concerned that UNT is about to walk into the Jones and push our $hit in next week.

Head Coaches Hired During AD Tenures

Frank Solich - Gotta give credit where its due, this was a good hire for that program. Kirby's first hire as an AD. Now, to the hirings following Solich:
Randy Shannon - Hired and fired Randy. Randy had never been a Head Coach before Kirby hired him and has never been hired as a College Head Coach again. By anybody.
Al Golden - Al had no P5 head coaching experience prior to Kirby hiring him. Al was fired by his Kirby's AD successor 4 seasons later. Al was never hired as a College Head Coach again. By anybody.
Tommy Tuberville (prob more a Hance hire) - might have to objectively lay this on Hance but anyways Tuberville was a bum here and a bum at non-P5 Cincinnati.
Kliff Kingsbury - KK had no prior Head Coaching experience of any kind prior to Kirby hiring him.
Matt Wells - Wells had no P5 head coaching experience prior to Kirby hiring him. In the 2 years following his firing, Wells has not been hired as a Head Coach for any other college job. By anybody.
Joey McGuire - Joey had no College head coaching experience prior to Kirby Hiring him.

I'll let you all discern what you want to about this hiring track record and fun facts.

Wanna be 6-6 into perpetuity with all the fun and hype and politicking, keep Kirby around.
Want to give yourself a legitimate chance at a competent football program, gotta cut the head off the snake.

RECRUITING: Couple big visitors for TCU game tomorrow...

Per a well-placed source, 2025 teammates Lloyd Jones III and Kelshaun Johnson are expected in Lubbock tomorrow night.

Jones is Tech's priority at QB for the class while Johnson is a four-star speedster who was timed at a 10.49 100m this past April. There are other recruits coming as well, but these two are the headliners.
