What’s going to change.

I’m so tired of being let down. I don’t want to get to the point to where I’m like I am with Dallas to were I expect nothing and I just don’t care. Difference between Dallas and tech is that I Love tech. I’m not a tech fan I am tech. So what the hell is going to change. I wish they would come out with a plan and come out with it yesterday. Like I don’t even know what to say anymore.

Joey’s IQ Level Challenge

I think we all assume coaches are generally smart enough to do their job.

But after listening to Joey defend the offense and bad mouthing defense makes me really wonder if he’s not that bright.

When asked about the choice to go for it on his own end and the following becoming a 40 yard TD run by WSU his response was

“It doesn’t matter if we went for it, or punt it, it would of been an 80 yard TD instead”

Is that how he justifies his bad game management?

How about punt the ball and make them go the whole field.

Tech vs Cincinnati game announced as Sold Out

Good news. Received email that the Cincinnati game was announced as a sell out. Not surprising since its Parents/Family Weekend and tickets were moving fast. I'd guess Baylor for Homecoming in October will eventually be a sell out as well.

Good job to the ticket office and the fans for doing their part. Hopefully the team shows up at some point this season before its too late.

STORY: Everything Joey McGuire said post-Washington State pres. by BHW Law

Lengthy, insightful post game with coach McGuire.

Opening Statement:

"I don't have a lot to say. Man, I didn't do a good enough job to win the game. And there's a lot of stuff that's going on between the penalties, uh, frustrating. 10 of 80 for penalties, one of five for fourth down, four turnovers. And, you know, that's on me, and I've got to get it fixed. It's very frustrating right now."

Coach, obviously, it's seemed like it was special teams. It was offensive execution. Situational football, complimentary football that you touched on in the week. I guess is there any bright spot for you tonight?

"It's kind of a double edged sword. I mean, I thought that we played better in the secondary, but then we also gave up 212 yards rushing to a quarterback, you know. So it's kind of back and forth with that, but you said it. I mean, we come out. We're trying to be aggressive. We take the football and we can't field the kick, you know, and so they get the ball right there. So you lose the possession, like we had two turnovers that were on their side of the field. You know, I know there were two big penalties to where we're on their side of the field, same as last week. You know, we get penalties when we're driving in, and it's frustrating. We're our own worst enemy right now, and you don't have a chance to even win a game whenever you're doing the things that we're doing, playing the way we're playing."

What did you think of Cam Dickey tonight?

"Yeah. I mean, I thought he did a good job. I mean, you know, you play a freshman, you know, there was some stuff that definitely, you know, you want one of the best, or the best backs in the country back there. We've got a really good play blocked up for Jalin Conyerson the fourth down, the first one that we missed that turned into, really, a 14 point swing. We gave up a touchdown on the very next play, and then we turned the ball over on our possession. And so they scored 14 points. And, you know, we missed a big block there, and it would have been good to have Tahj in that position."

Did Mateer surprise y'all with what he was able to do with his legs?

"He's shown it, they hadn't done it very much. he can do that. You know, it's again. I thought we did a good job of playing coverage much better than we did last week. Did some different things. We dropped eight. Some of the times that we dropped eight, we gave up contain, we gave up contain when we rushed four. The frustrating part of him running the game was just some of the things that we've really struggled with. I mean, you go back and you're going to see some of the stuff that K State has hurt us on with the quarterback run game and and there were times that they did the same thing with him."

How discouraging is it to start like this with all the transfers you brought in?

"The discouraging one is tonight, because we lost. I mean, if we came out and we won by one point, I would say that we every game you got to learn from and you're not going to play a perfect game. But, you know, I would be happy. I'm really discouraged right now, because for two games, we have been our own worst enemy. We can't get out of our own way. And when I say we, it starts with me, you know, going back and taking a really hard look at what we're doing on both sides of the ball and on special teams. And, you know, some of the in game decisions that you've got to be better at."

One for five on fourth down...

"We're one for three in the first half. What I said to our guys the first half of whatever the score was. I mean, it was all us. You know, we turned the ball over. I think three times at that point could be wrong. It might have been only two. We had had some penalties, and they were one of three on fourth down. And again, one of those, one of three, we come up short, and it turns into a 14 point swing."

You mentioned a moment ago, questioning some, some in game decisions. I'm sure, obviously people will talk about the fourth downs, yeah, some you're thinking of in game decisions in addition to that?

"I mean, like if, if you're sitting there and, and, you know, you if we're not going to be better on fourth down if you punt that ball now, do they have a longer field to drive? We're not playing very well on defense right now either. So they have a longer field to drive. I mean, it's just one of those deals in the first, really, the first two years, we have done really good job, I think, defensively off of missed conversions. And right now, through two games, we are not doing a good job after missed conversions. it's frustrating, man, because our philosophy is to be aggressive. And we're an analytics team, and right now the numbers are coming up, you know, short for us. I mean, I the big turn in that game again, was the missed first down. They score on the very next play on, I think the running back, they run counter to the nub. He scores. We come out, throw the ball. Josh Kelly fumbles. They get the ball down like the one yard line, and they score. Mean, at that point, it becomes 21-7. And that was big part of the game."

In that same vein, All five of their touchdown drives came when they had a short field, 51 yards or shorter. Does that change the thought process analytics, and maybe going for it a little less with you guys not executing on defense like that?

"It does 100%. But the first short field was, we can't field a kick. You know, we're not positioning, and so that starts the short field. But you're right. I mean, they the defense gives up however many you said. I mean, that's really frustrating. But in the same boat, they had a 43 yard touchdown on quarterback counter. So, I mean, on running back counter. So the ball was, they're still going to score on that because we played it so freaking bad. You know, the quarterback had that long run at the end. If he was at the one, he just would have gone longer, I mean, but you're 100% right. Like, that's the first thing whenever I went in there and sit down to question myself is, do we need to really look at when we're going to go for it on fourth down? Because in the first half, seven to three, then it goes 14 to three, then it goes 21 to three, and then it goes 21 to 10. It goes 21 to 27 to 10 going into halftime, you know. And so 14 of those points, you know, come off like really, back to back plays."

Do you see a lack of everybody being on the same page? Because so many guys are coming from so many different systems and so many different places?

"No, because if you look at those guys, Josh Kelly, and he did turn the ball over tonight, and it happens in football, but he's probably more productive than anybody we've had in the last two years. You know, Caleb Douglas, a little bit in the same way, so, like the production, but you and again, you can't turn the ball over four times and expect to win the game. You can't go one for five on fourth down and expect to win the game. You can't have 10 penalties for 80 yards and expect to win the game. That if you look at all of those, that was more us than them. And so it that had nothing to do with being on the same page, that had us not executing."

At what point can Micah Hudson see more snaps? Given his reputation, people clamoring to see him on the field.

"People are clamoring for me not to go for it on fourth down. So much right now, you know, people are clamoring for me to do a better job, and I'm clamoring for myself to a better job. We have to do a good job of getting him going. It's just always one of those deals of like, he's got to play more. Jordan Brown, I don't see him show on what I got, but he made some big plays for us. We got to get him more on the field. But it's also like, who you take off? You know, got a guy that has nine catches for 95 yards, another guy's got five for 54 four for 71 and then we played with a couple young backs that, you know, had to step up."

Could you give your assessment on what Behren Morton did tonight?

"We had to throw the ball 60 times because we were behind. You know, I'm really anxious, so first time that he has been hit the way he was hit tonight, and I'm really anxious to how he responds tomorrow. You know, he's going to be sore. That's one thing, whenever, at the end, whenever I was talking to him, I was just asking, you know, how he feels, make sure shoulder felt good, and everything he felt good. I mean, he sore, because he got hit a lot. Anytime, whenever you get into where they know you've got to throw the football, then they can tee off and, you know, I think we gave up one sack. We got one sack, but he still got hit way too much.

Excuses vs results

When addressing the issues we have continually seen from the offense over the past 2 plus seasons, the pattern of Kittley's defenders has been to:

- blame the QB's lack of skills or abilities and/or
- blame the O-linemen lack of skills or abilities and/or
- blame the WRs lack of skills or abilities and/or
- injuries and/or
- the conditions (field/weather) and/or
- penalties and/or
- the opponent doing something we didn't expect and/or
- the defense sucking and not doing it's job and/or
- recruiting not kicking in yet

Even if some of these are legitimate, at what point do we recognize that ZK has some responsibility? That at the end of the day, dispite hardships, results matter.

Edit: this is directed to those that still feel ZK is worth keeping.

Can someone explain our offense to me…

Like I am a 5 year old. Why do we not throw anything in the middle of the field? The real AirRaid had lots of crossing routes, quick ins or outs, and most importantly pressured the defense allowing us to stretch the field. It also had drawn out runs to both sides of the field.

What is Kittley running? Why is aknots every call so obvious to the amateur eye? Why does he run SO MANY WR screens that have the qb do nothing but throw the ball flat down the Los? Why does he run such a half ass tempo that just throws away a down every time?

UPDATE: My post-mortem of Texas Tech's 37-16 loss to Washington State pres. by All Hands Craft Cocktails

Welcome back. No drawn out intro here or anything, let's just dive straight into my thoughts from last night.

After the performance that we all witnessed from the defense against Abilene Christian, it was imperative that this side of the ball find some sort of resolve and turn it around against the Cougars. ACU thrashed the Red Raiders through the air, WSU did their work on the ground. John Mateer, who was noted to be a dual threat QB and a lightning bolt in the scramble game, found open space constantly in the designed run game.

The QB run game has terrorized Tech under the current regime and it was no different with Mateer.

CJ Baskerville pointed out that the defense’s tackling needs work, this was evident in the several times where first contact was made behind the line and the play still evolved for big gains. Wazzu rushed for 301 yards total, Mateer accounted for 197 of them.

The defensive line looked lost at times, the linebackers were slow and the secondary was outmuscled and in a daze trying to catch Mateer. You could say the secondary had a better game defending the pass, but Mateer only threw the ball 19 times and his receivers dropped four passes. I was personally just astonished at truly how silly John Mateer made this Red Raider defense look.

I don’t think I’ve been as frustrated watching an offensive performance from this current staff as I was watching last night. Here is what stood out to me:
  • Postgame, Behren Morton remarked that the offense continued to take what the defense was giving them. Wazzu was taking away a lot of the deep game and that was why the offense couldn’t get vertical and the screen game/underneath concepts were so prevalent last night. Now my thinking on this. Zach Kittley has been adamant that he wants to take what the defense gives them and to not force anything. But in this regard, you had this extreme overhaul in the passing game through the portal, for what? Every defense is going to try to take away the deep ball, I don’t reckon you’ll find many teams who consistently make themselves vulnerable to getting beat over the top, not consciously, at least. Do you not trust your playmakers to be able to cause a bust in coverage? Give them a chance, and if the guys you’re counting on can’t beat deep coverage then maybe they really aren’t as explosive vertically as we thought they could be. There’s a distinct difference in taking what the defense gives you and letting the defense completely deter you from taking any chances at all.

  • Our very own @J. Apodaca asked Joey for his assessment on Behren’s performance last night. Joey’s response dealt with the amount of hits Behren took. Important, yes, but you’re leaving so much of the story untold. My personal assessment was Behren did not look the part last night, in really any facet of running the offense. 323 yards read his statline. 270 of those were the result of the receivers making something out of nothing in the redundant screen game. I think if you’re going to gripe about the lack of a vertical concept last night (like I just did), you also have to recognize that Behren’s placement on deep balls was downright bad. Overthrows, underthrows, balls thrown behind, really all of the above. 4-for-16 and two picks on passes beyond 10 air-yards. Not great.

  • Last point on offense, I was a bit more understanding a week ago when we all discussed the lack of Micah Hudson. In the opener, with the kind of situation you were in, I could get the idea of trusting your veterans to carry you. But hearing once again the notion of “Who do you take off the field?” was really, really disappointing. Kelly and Douglas did some good things last night, they’re dynamic after the catch. Eakin had great moments against ACU and he did get some separation on some routes but was let down by the pass. However, I would certainly have to imagine that it is possible to rotate these receivers and give Micah some more snaps. I understand everything surrounding his slow progression into game action, but you're gonna have to get him involved somehow. Keep him engaged and give him the platform to learn in-game. Jeremiah Smith, freshman former 5-star wideout at Ohio State, struggled early for the Buckeyes last week. Day and Hartline kept believing in him, let him work through the struggles and he's had a couple really good performances for them. Context is critical, I know, but you've gotta get Micah involved.
I’m having a hard time drawing the line between questions and conclusions. I know it’s only been two games but the product we’ve seen has not been very promising.

Thank you to our BMDs

We appreciate all you do for our university. All our new buildings that you helped build are beautiful . However you need to stick to doing the job that made you billionaires. You aren’t worth a sh!t at hiring a football coach or running a football program even if you think you are smarter than our AD and everyone else on here (well maybe you are as smart as the AD since you both have failed at hiring football coaches). We listened for 3 years to you bitch and whine about our last coach and how you hated him and how bad the AD was to hire him and then you were given the opportunity to hire your guy and we got this sh!t show. How about next time you put your football genius egos aside and hire a search firm to find us a coach like we did when Leach was hired. We know the AD isn’t capable of hiring one and now know you aren’t either. ( And to the BMDs that weren’t part of this hire thank you for all you do and thank you for being smart enough to know to stay out of trying to run a football program)
