Holy moly, what a steaming pile of inefficiency.
1. Can we please get rid of the 'delay handoff' play? It's not a draw, it's just a dive (sometimes a counter) where the quarterback shows his hand by purposefully taking 2 full seconds to hand it to the RB. It almost always results in a tackle for loss. I would love to hear Yost try to explain what's the play design here.
2. What is the point of installing 11 personnel formations if 1) the TE can't block, and even worse 2) you never even attempt to throw it to the TE?
3. I get that Bowman has the downfield accuracy of your average intermural quarterback, but why didn't we force ISU to respect deep balls with Vasher/Ezukanma? These guys can make plays on the sideline - give them a fighting chance! Instead, we let ISU plant their heels 10 yards downfield and blow up all of our dink-and-dunk nonsense.
4. Speaking of dink-and-dunk, we have zero route layering in our offense. None. Neal Brown had the same problem here. They either run a few verticals, or a few sticks, or a few slants. I get how these plays can beat zone coverage, but not if you keep running the same stick combinations over and over again. How many passing plays were thrown into an area where 3-4 ISU defenders were waiting? They were crashing down on every one. Even the "successful" plays would lead to 4 and 5 yard completions. That's fine for 3rd and short, but it can't be your entire offense.
5. Our wide receiver blocking seems to have taken a marginal hit since Kliff's departure. Seems like most yards after a screen are because the ball carrier breaks a tackle at the line-of-scrimmage.
6. I may have missed a play, but I only saw Bowman throw 1 throw that challenged the downfield seam, which is outrageous considering our skill in the slot and that Bowman was so good with that throw his first years on campus.
In conclusion, the only way this offense works is if we find a Manziel, Lamar Jackson, or even Trevone Boykin - someone with elite elusiveness and/or speed to make plays when the designed play is hot garbage, which it frequently is with Yost.
