Arizona has been a pretty pitiful WCBB program. Prior to this year, Arizona had been to the NCAA tournament 7 times with one Sweet 16 appearance. All were in a stretch from the late 90's to the early 2000s. Prior to this season their last NCAA tournament appearance was 2005.
In April 2016 they hired Adia Barnes, an alumni, to be their HC. Barnes had played in the WNBA and in Europe until 2011. She had never been a HC at any level. She was an assistant with Univ Washington from 2011 to 2016. In Barnes's 2nd season at Arizona (2017-2018) the Wildcats won 6 games overall and 2 wins in the PAC-12. In her 5th year as a HC, they will play tonight for the national championship.
Great defense is Arizona's identity which helped them beat Connecticut in the semi-final.
Stanford is still coached by HOF'er Tara Vanderveer. Stanford leading scorer, senior Kiana Williams, is from San Antonio playing in front of a lot of friends and family. Haley Jones was the semi-final hero hitting the winning shot to beat South Carolina 66-65.
Stanford whipped Arizona on New Years day 81-54 and again on Feb 22, 62-48. As they say, it is hard to beat a good team three times in one season.
