Why Does Everyone Think Holgorsen is that much better than Wells?

I can understand why many of you would prefer Holgorsen over Wells...you’ve heard of Holgorsen, he’s consistently beaten us, his teams are occasionally in the national spotlight…

But I’m kind of at a loss on how so many of you are SO positive that Holgorsen is the better hire. As if there is absolutely no case to be made for Wells and Kirby should be fired for this decision.

When looking at conference records as a head coach, Wells is clearly better. Wells is 30-18 (62.5%) in conference games, and Holgorsen is 38-32 (54.29%).

Holgorsen has been a bit more consistent, having never won fewer than 2 games in conference, but he’s also never lost less than 2 games in conference (including the season when they were still in the Big East). Wells has (1) season of only 1 conference win, but (2) seasons of only 1 loss.

It seems to me that Wells has a higher ceiling, especially considering the note from Dickens about financial budgets at Utah St being 2nd to lowest in the confernece (or something like that), but they have still gone 7-1 twice.

This is all surface level stuff that we can all look up. There’s surely a lot of stuff that Kirby considers beyond records, which most of us are not privy to. What is his strategy regarding recruiting? How much salary does the HC want, leaving how much for assistants? What do other coaches say about him? How willing is the coach to engage the fan base and community? Etc etc etc.

The fact that Kirby has considered all of these factors and is choosing Wells leads me to believe that he’s the best hire (of those willing to take the job, obviously). Maybe you think you know more than Kirby and you don’t think it’s the best hire, but you should at least think it’s worth giving him a chance.
