Why do we recruit tight ends?

Very puzzling. I hear that some teams actually use them in receiving passes, which seems like an interesting use of the position, but I have difficulty understanding why the genius that is our OC bothers with that seemingly useless position. Why not just use a big ole hay baler?
I actually saw a few successful offensive football teams send a TE on a brush block on a LB or crashing Safety, then head downfield for a wide open completed pass. I think that might be too complicated for our OC. It looked like a fun play. I’ve actually seen Jr High teams do that. Maybe we could hire a Jr High OC to replace our existing OC to try that play. Just a thought.
Oh, and when the X stacks 24 in the box, let’s not try to run # 28. We might get him killed.
