Realignment Stuff
I don't know if these numbers are correct or not, but they seem about right..
You'll never change my mind that the Big 12 didn't mess up adding all of the schools we did. Hindsight is 20/20, but we would probably only add BYU if we could do it over again. Or maybe BYU and UH.
There is sort of this goldilocks zone for Big 12 expansion, where the $ is right for all sides. With the conference at 12 teams again, adding the 4 corner schools is probably going to result in us taking a paycut. Dividing a number by 16 teams is a number. Dividing a number by 12 or 14 is a bigger number.
If the above numbers are right, we aren't in the goldilocks zone. The 4 corner pac 12 schools are not going to be adding $200+ mil in total distributions to the Big 12 by 2026. That's what it would take to justify adding them. And that's just not happening. Maybe the Big 12 wants expansion bad enough to where we all agree to make less money to add those schools. It probably wouldn't be THAT much less $, and the original Big 12 schools will get a short-term boon from UT/OU exit fees plus the 4 new G5 schools taking less money at first. But it's likely going to be a paycut and it sure seems like conference realignment is driven by $$$.
Alternatively, maybe the above numbers are wrong. Maybe the Big 12 will be making $40 mil per year by 2027. Then the Pac 12 & Big 12 payouts would be the same, and the Pac 12 schools don't necessarily have a big incentive to come over here. That's not the goldilocks zone either.
The goldilocks zone is some world where the Pac 12 TV deal is going to be absolutely terrible, and the Big 12 TV deal (with the current teams) isn't too big to where adding anyone makes it impossible to increase the per school payout. It's hard to come up with a hypothetical of that because it's so unlikely. I guess what I'm saying is.... if the Big 12 expands, it's going to be unlike any other conf expansion in history because the pot is not going to be right for everyone. UT/OU to the SEC. The pot was right for everyone. Nebraska to Big 10... pot was right for everyone. SWC to Big 12... pot was right for everyone. etc., etc.
Big 12 Media Day
Out of the 30+ guys attending media day this week for Big 12 schools, I only counted 2 QBs that have played in a Big 12 game, the Kansas QB and Spencer Sanders. There will only be 4 total QBs in attendance. That's probably a record low for Big 12 media day and an indicator that this conference is so wide open.
Football Facility Stuff
Ben Golan pointed this out, but Baylor spent $266 million to build their brand new stadium. We are spending an estimated $200 million to re-do an endzone and build a new FTF. That’s insane. How is that even possible? I guess their little stadium really is a cracker jack box.
The proposed drawings indicate our meeting rooms are going to be enormous. There are multiple coach's war rooms. One that contemplates seating 40 guys. I remember seeing some tiny meeting rooms in that "day of the life" of Kliff video a while back. Huge upgrade there.
The recruiting lounge is massive. It’s about half the size of our locker room. There’s also a “recruit theater” on a different level.
The recruiting department --- Blanchard and company – appear to be getting a huge upgrade. They all have individual offices, a war room in the middle, and then a separate conference room. It’s like 1300 SQ foot of space for recruiting ops. It’s probably nothing right now.
Also, how can I not draw irrational conclusions about Jacob Rodriquez being on the announcement video? I bet he ends up being 3-year starter on defense or something.
