Given the state of our football program with no short or long term relief in sight, it seems to me that we are becoming another Kansas. In other words, Tech is on the way to being an elite basketball school while the football program is a certifiable joke.
In years past, Kentucky and Duke are other schools that fell into this category. More recently both Kentucky and Duke seem to be resurrecting their football programs but for many years they too were terrible in football. They were just considered blue blood basketball schools and that was ok for their alums. Obviously, Tech has a ways to go in basketball before we can be in the same conversation with those schools but at least even now we are able to beat just about anyone on a given night. In the state of Texas, where football is king, that's not too shabby.
So for now, we can take a lot of pride in our basketball program where the sky is the limit. Hopefully football will catch up sooner rather than later but with the way things are right now, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Lets face it...Tech is now a basketball school. Enjoy it, embrace it and don't let the football program get you down. (I think a lot of you are already thinking this.) There are other parts of the country where this is just fine. For now, this should be the case in Lubbock.
