When we hire anyone else it will be a mistake. There is no coach on any list I've seen that should take this job. Holgersen is the closest but it would not be in the best interest of either Tech or Dana. Now the issues with Venables are clear, No HC experience, and if he doesn't win big here then he will bolt rapidly. Venables from 1999-2011 was part of great OU staffs, and now since 2012 the same thing with Clemson. He can recruit for sure and he has coached with the blue bloods long enough there is no doubt he could put together a monster staff. You need a guy like Venables to spark the fan base into a hopeful future. Leavitt, Wells, and to some degree Holgorsen won't do that.
