It's freaking baseball season! Time for another trip to Omaha.
If you don't live in Lubbock, I highly recommend the $9 per month subscription to TTU.tv. It's a quality stream and you can watch almost every game.
Let's take a look at the Oregon Ducks.
Key Returnees
- Jr. IF Spencer Steer - .275 avg - 4 HR - 37RBI - Started 53 games in 2018
- So. IF Jonny DeLuca - .212 avg - 6 HR - 32 RBI - Started 54 games in 2018
- RS Sr. C Jakob Goldfarb - .308 avg - 6 HR - 29RBI - 14 SB - Started 53 games in 2018
- Jr. 1B Gabe Matthews - .265 avg - 4 HR - 37 RBI - Started all 55 Games in 2018
- Jr. P/OF Kenyon Yovan - 10 GS - 2.98 ERA - 6-4 W/L (Plays OF as well
- So. P Kolby Somers - 11 GS - 4.62 ERA - 2-7 W/L
- Jr. P Ryne Nelson - 16 App - 3.86 ERA - 4 Saves
Goldfarb is their guy in the lineup. Led the team in avg, hits, total bases, and OPS.
Kenyon Yovan is a two way player who will probably start game one this weekend, and hit in every other game.
Key Losses
Matt Mercer - Pitcher - 88 IP. Led team in games started and innings pitched in 2018.
Parker Kelly - Pitcher - 3.26 ERA over 47 IP. Went 4-0 with 29 appearances in 2018.
Kyle Kasser - IF - .278 avg. Led the Ducks with 60 hits. Started every game in 2018.
Notes
- The Ducks were just not very good last season. They finished the year 26-29 overall, with a 12-18 Pac 12 mark. Which ended up being 9th in the conference.
- Goldfarb is the backbone of the lineup. He was the only player to hit over .300 in the 2018 campaign.
- The staff will heavily rely on Kenyon Yovan, Ryne Nelson, and Cullen Kafka for consistent innings in the rotation. The ducks had 4 pitchers appear in double digit games with an ERA over 6.0. The bullpen was taxed because they really only had two reliable starters in Yovan and Mercer. Mercer is gone, Yovan will be the Friday night guy, and they desperately need Nelson or Kafka to step up.
- The Ducks had a team average of .263 last season and held opponents to hitting .239. They played the 43rd best schedule in 2018 and ended up being 98th in RPI.
- For a quick comparison, TTU hit .309 as a team last season, and held the 16th SOS to hitting .246.
Projected Lineups and Rotations
OREGON
- I won't even begin to try to put together a lineup prediction for the Ducks. The only three consistent bats they return this season are Goldfarb, Yovan, and Spencer Steer. Other than that, you're looking at a total crapshoot. Oregon had 6 regular starters hit below .240 in the 2018 campaign. They will be looking for growth from some underclassmen, or newcomers to provide some pop to the lineup.
ROTATION
Friday - Kenyon Yovan
Saturday - Ryne Nelson
Sunday - Kolby Somers
Monday - Cullen Kafka
Hunter Breault and Nico Tellache are the two bullpen arms who saw the most action in 2018.
TEXAS TECH
C - Stillwell/Fulford
1B - Warren
2B - Klein
SS - Neuse/Baker
3B - Jung
LF - Masters/Otremba
CF - Marusak
RF - Holt
DH - Rumfield/Kelley
ROTATION (Announced 2/14)
Friday - Caleb Kilian
Saturday - Bryce Bonnin
Sunday - Mason Montgomery
Monday - No stinking clue. Lanning-Mcdonald-Beeter-Floyd-Garlett-Dallas could all factor into the starting pitching situation.
Bullpen
-Haveman - Just have to see some improvement with command this year as you will really need someone to step into the LHP relief role.
- Freeman - Business up front, party in the back. Needs movement to keep hitters off the heat.
- John McMillon - Closer.
- McDonald - Coming off Tommy John I think he will settle into some role in the bullpen.
- Queen - INNINGS EATER.
- Sublette - Love his movement, but he had the propensity to blow up in some innings last season.
Overall I think this weekend will end up being a great opportunity to get as many bats in the lineup and as many arms as possible into game situations. The Red Raiders are poised to flat out thump the baseball in 2019, and if you see a newcomer really grow into a weekend rotation role, look out. Getting Lanning and McDonald back is big.
Texas Tech sweeps this weekend, but be sure to tune in Friday for Kilian vs Yovan. Should be a ton of fun. The TTU lineup is just too good and TTU should be playing with a lead all weekend.
I'm going to keep combing some stats and see if there are any numbers that jump out at me for the Ducks.
