There has been the age old axiom saying it was Jimmie's and Joe's over Xs and O's.

Still...we see every year, teams full of Jimmie's and Joe's under achieve. We also see brilliant Xs and O's coaches overwhelmed by superior talent.
Clearly you need both at some level.

But.. thinking back on our deep tournament runs along with watching North Texas make their run, there's a third component that's just as important as the other two...maybe moreso.
The ability for a coach to get his players to give maximum effort for as long as possible.

It was pretty obvious that the Jimmy's and Joe's on North Texas and ours in our deep tournament runs were NOT the best players in the nation. We had one fringe NBA player in all of our runs.
I also don't believe that we were just bedazzling everyone with our Xs and O's.

What we did, and what it seems McCasland teams do is the players buy in to the coaches vision and play balls to the wall in trying to achieve that vision.
If the players are mid level and the Xs and O's are mid level but the buy in and effort are elite , the results will be pretty darn good.
Now...how much is this coaches getting kids to do this and how much is it coaches identifying the right kids? Not sure.

But both McCasland and McCollom seem to have an extremely high success rate in this area.
